I just love going away and have really loved most places. One place in particular really Underwhelmed me...Gibraltar...just like Britain in the sun! I'm sure it has so much to offer, but I couldn't wait to cross the border back to Spain!

Most places in the US. But it's not the places, it's the Americans who describe everything as 'OMG you MUST go there!!! It's AMAZZZIINNGG!!' A total must-see, once in a lifetime'

And then you go and realise that in European they said 'Yeah that place is ok, you can check it out if you have nothing better to do'

honeyroar · 20/01/2018 22:05

I agree that Dubai is over rated, same for Sorrento (that and Milan are the only places I haven't liked in Italy -tip for other Italian cities, go out of season!). I love San Francisco. Yes there are a lot of homeless people and rough areas (it's a city!) but it's easy to get away from the tourist traps and it's a lovely place to walk in. Again, it's better out of season, in winter. I do like New York (I used to love it, but have been so many times I'm getting bored of it!). I can't think why people don't like Vancouver, it's so beautiful. I really liked Pompei too, but that was 20 yrs ago, so perhaps it's changed?.

AHungryMum · 20/01/2018 22:05

I'm surprised that how many dislikes Amsterdam! That said, my experience was possibly different to all of yours, we didn't go to the red light district or any coffee shops, we stayed in Jordaan and went to museums so it was quite civilised....

Not been to Niagra Falls yet so quite shocked at how unpopular that seems too! Venice in less surprised by because I know it's expensive and crowded, although I still want to go....

IamPickleRick · 20/01/2018 22:05

Aeroflotgirl I am shocked you had high expectations of Southend to begin with. It’s a dump but that’s why we love it 😂

IggyAce · 20/01/2018 22:05

@hungrymum, Dublin too for me, incredibly expensive and very little to do when compared with other cities.

glitterglitters · 20/01/2018 22:06

The Statue of Liberty. It's tiny.

purplecorkheart · 20/01/2018 22:06

Naples,

mnahmnah · 20/01/2018 22:06

Loved Paris, San Fran (beautiful weather, unusually, which helped) and LA.

Totally underwhelmed and shocked by the pyramids in Egypt.

IamPickleRick · 20/01/2018 22:07

The Statue of Liberty and Ellis island were my best bits!

Shopgirl1 · 20/01/2018 22:07

London, Manchester, San Diego, LA, Madrid.

LaurieMarlow · 20/01/2018 22:07

Ok I clearly need to give Venice another go. Preferably in winter.

I'm always surprised at the Paris hate on mumsnet. It's glorious.

And I loved San Fran.

givemesteel · 20/01/2018 22:07

Christ the Redeemer in Rio. Definitely doesn't deserve to be a wonder of the world.

tenterden · 20/01/2018 22:07

Oh dear!

Well I love SF, Oxford, Sorrento, Paris, NY and London.

Places I haven't liked:

LA - it's just roads.
Glasgow - drab
Japan - unnerving and intimidating
Venice - much prettier places in Italy to see.
Costa Rica - boring.

Tapandgo · 20/01/2018 22:08

Can’t understand why people didn’t like NY?
Loved it - been twice in winter and summer. Loved it _ great history, lovely sights, fab museums, galleries and theatre. Food was great and shopping excellent.

LizzieSiddal · 20/01/2018 22:08

NY, dirty, loud, very unfriendly and unhelpful staff in hotels/restaurants/shops. And so many homeless people, a lot of them sleeping on church steps/doorways and being stepped over by the congregation. Hmm I know London has similar problems but to me NY seemed more brutal.

Paris, very underwhelming, dirty and quite scary.

Lands End is an embarrassment. So tacky!

ChateauCollapso · 20/01/2018 22:08

Mauritius. Lovely resort but didn't live up to expectations.

AntArcticFox · 20/01/2018 22:08

I like New York. I think I could happily live there.

Upper West Side for preference.

I could eat out well for breakfast every day. Then graze on bagels. Mmm.

Bowerbird5 · 20/01/2018 22:08

Gloucester I was very disappointed in it except for the church it was wonderful we were a short walk from there. We enjoyed around the docks and had a lovely meal at Coals?

Tenerife couldn't understand why so many people liked it. Enjoyed the broach to the centre little village was pretty and Mt Teide was interesting. Other wise nothing, wouldn't go back there.

Fletchasaurus · 20/01/2018 22:09

Rome, it was dirty, it smelt and was just horrible, not somewhere I want to return!

user764329056 · 20/01/2018 22:10

Love some others hate, Zanzibar, Amsterdam

Didn’t like Washington DC or Japan

LizzieSiddal · 20/01/2018 22:10

“The Statue of Liberty and Ellis island were my best bits!“ yes those were my best bits of NY too. And oh the irony of seeing how the place is built on immigration and what is happening now with The Orange One.

OohOohMrPeevly · 20/01/2018 22:10

I disliked Gloucester too bowerbird5.

Aeroflotgirl · 20/01/2018 22:10

Ha ha Iampickle, i remember it not so bad from my childhood 35 years ago, and went for the first time since then, last year, nah nah really bad,

Another one is Magic Kingdom in Orlando Florida, went 13 years ago, and it was not as magical as I thought it would be, the staff were quite rude and quite clearly did not want to be there. I found staff at Gulliversland in Milton Keynes, much more friendly.

Bearbehind · 20/01/2018 22:12

Slightly Hmm at people dismissing entire countries

LA
Glasgow
Japan

Really?

MollyHuaCha · 20/01/2018 22:12

Alton Towers

It's just a contrived 'you will have fun whether you like it or not' sort of place. But all I saw were lengthy queues for rides whether you exit through the gift shop... Hmm
