I just love going away and have really loved most places. One place in particular really Underwhelmed me...Gibraltar...just like Britain in the sun! I'm sure it has so much to offer, but I couldn't wait to cross the border back to Spain!

MsHarry are you from London? If so you might find NY difficult because there are certain standards you’ll have come to expect from a city. If you aren’t used to a specific public transport you might be ok. Readily available tube maps for instance. Information on which stops each line takes and stops being displayed on the wall of the tube. Everything is uptown or downtown which means fuck all if you have no idea where in town you are, or if you are going east or west. The turnstiles are both entry and exit, so you can get knocked out by a commuter coming at you the other way. The cab drivers don’t do a knowledge or any other NY geography test so expect them to drive around aimlessly and ask you for directions then kick you out when they can’t find the place. They’ll want a tip for that too. You can’t get a decent tea anywhere. Toilets are weird, very low and there’s a huge gap in the door. I had pancakes for breakfast and they put icing sugar on my sausage. There were loads of other things that pissed me off at the time, all just small things that added up.

Yep...no food. We survived on fish and chips for three days and one day on horrible pot noddle when the only place selling food (fish and chip shop) was closed and every single pub etc wasnt selling food as it was either too early, too late, or they just selling beer. This was before internet and trip advisor

I felt very underwhelmed by Paris. I had a lovely time nonetheless but did come away feeling let down.
I loved Barcelona on the other hand, but I found Casa Mila and Casa Batllo disappointing, they had been highly recommended and when we went we felt that they were overhyped.

OohOohMrPeevly · 20/01/2018 21:59

I loved Venice - it was really busy but once you got on the water it was incredible. And drinking cocktails by the Grand Canal watching the world go by was lovely. For those who were disappointed by Dublin you need to go somewhere like Galway to really experience Ireland. Donegal is spectacular too and so desolate and feels like stepping back a century but it takes some getting to.

I actually really liked LA but had low expectations & ended up in Bev Hills which probably helped.

Enjoyed Barbados & always felt safe. Very underwhelmed by Barcelona, food patchy & nightlife overrated.

Vulgarlady · 20/01/2018 22:00

Bath. ESP the Royal Crescent - gloomy and monstrous. Don’t like the stone there

Paris - feel really unsafe there

Florence - a dump

ChristmasTablecloth · 20/01/2018 22:00

Bath

Los Angeles but then LA isn't really a place

But actually it's really difficult to underwhelm me - I genuinely love to be anywhere different. If I'd had a different childfree life I think I would have gone away somewhere more or less every weekend.

The English countryside and the idea of rural living massively underwhelms me but I like it for a day or two.

Andromeida29 · 20/01/2018 22:01

Aruba and Chitzen Itcha. Aruba was just garish and Chitzen Itcha was so full of tourists you couldn't move.

feska5 · 20/01/2018 22:01

Barbados - hated it! It was 30 years ago though. Never been tempted to return to the Caribbean

Knittedfairies · 20/01/2018 22:02

Watto I'd forgotten the Golden Gate Bridge; I said at the time that it wasn’t a patch on the Humber Bridge.

NewDOOFUSfor18 · 20/01/2018 22:02

Tintagal. I LOVE castles and castle ruins, have visited many, but it was the biggest anti climax I have ever suffered. I had very obviously built it up in my head but when I stepped onto the path and saw what I was supposed to be going to I instantly deflated then went for a coffee.

PurplePotatoes · 20/01/2018 22:02

Central London - just very dirty and grim.

Florida - enjoyed it but the parks still have the same rides as when I went 30yrs ago and Florida itself seemed to have no soul - you could drive for miles and not see a single person, the ones you did meet were very abrupt and offhand...came home having had a good time but no desire to go back.

Chewbecca · 20/01/2018 22:02

legally we loved Vancouver! (Not PP tho).

Only place I've visited & really didn't like was Monastir in Tunisia. Dirty, ugly, constantly harassed.

MsHarry · 20/01/2018 22:02

Iam no I don't live in London but a frequent visitor as family there so yes am used to the tube etc. Interesting, thank you.

london I think Dublin has moved on. Before internet is probably before opening times had been extended.

BarbarianMum · 20/01/2018 22:02

Australia??? What all of it?

GodIsDead · 20/01/2018 22:02

Paris....it's an ashtray

OohOohMrPeevly · 20/01/2018 22:02

Sorry I keep thinking of places I've loved rather than places I've been underwhelmed by and I just remembered that I really liked Hay on Wye in the summer.

Foobarjar · 20/01/2018 22:03

Underwhelmed by Gibraltar, Jersey, Norfolk, Dublin, San Fran, Paris, Florence, Barcelona, Venice beach LA...

but loved Santa Monica LA, NYC, Sicily, Rome, Vancouver, Seattle, Madrid, Majorca and Bali

Notallthat · 20/01/2018 22:03

Rome
San Francisco
Venice
Lanzarote
Melbourne
New York
Dublin
Newquay

Aeroflotgirl · 20/01/2018 22:03

Southend, crowded, dreary and expensive.

OohOohMrPeevly · 20/01/2018 22:04

Newdoofusfor18 have you visited Broughton Castle in Oxfordshire - my favourite.

butIamrightright · 20/01/2018 22:04

Oh & Marrakech did not meet my high expectations. I’d been to Istanbul a few months before & loved it, although this was just before Erdogan took power.

MsHarry · 20/01/2018 22:04

Amazed that anyone could fine Bath stone gloomy...

Roussette · 20/01/2018 22:05

Sorry but I am giggling at the hating the stone on the Royal Crescent in Bath. It's beautiful sandstone, what's not to like, it's Grade 1 Listed Georgian architecture, don't quite get the hate!

Gizzymum · 20/01/2018 22:05

Monument Valley was not as impressive as I'd hoped.

For the people saying they found Blackpool underwhelming, I'm intrigued as to what you were expecting? Surely you have to have decent expectations to be underwhelmed and I thought everyone knew it was just another grey cold tacky British seaside town 😜
