To ask if you've had Pneumonia, how did you know it wasn't 'just a cough'

Christmastits · 20/01/2018 00:59

Had a cough since Tuesday, I've called in sick for the weekend. I'm not starting to feel any better.

I have a temp of 39.5 and my sputum is now brown, it's really hard to cough up anything but it's always there. Lots of vomiting caused by the coughing, I feel bloody awful.

Drs on Thursday said it was viral but I'm not so sure now, I feel like I have the flu, I also have a uti which I'm on antibiotics for but they won't treat a chest infection.

Is it time to go back to OOH tomorrow? Or tonight? I all of a sudden feel really unwell. I'll have to wake DH up to take me but I don't feel like this is just a cough any more

Im so sorry for everything you have been through Flowers

Christmastits · 01/02/2018 23:30

Yes I'm resting. I'm starting to feel slightly bored today so I think that's a good sign!

Chest drain came out yesterday so I feel so much more comfortable! This thread is lovely though thank you for your lovely thoughts :)

Boredom is definitely a good sign! Glad you are feeling a bit better. Do keep taking it easy and don’t try to take things too quickly. Grapes and hugs!and Cake

RestingButchFace · 01/02/2018 23:52

Just read your whole thread. Wow you have been through the ringer you poor thing. Really hope that you get to go home next week. Try not to push yourself when you get home, rest even after just pneumonia is essential let alone after your loss. My Mum is a pneumonia veteran bless her. Luckily we spot it now as she usually hallucinates with it or acts very oddly. The last time I found her sitting trying to knit something ( never knitted in her life, had found my wool and needles) I asked her what she was making and she replied that it was a cosy for the TV remote Grin

RandomMess · 02/02/2018 07:52

Whoop whoop you're feeling bored, how great is that!!

Carry on getting better Thanks

KennDodd · 02/02/2018 07:58

I had Pneumonia a few years ago, when I went the the doctor I was told off for not going sooner. A few years later I had a cough, same symptoms, felt just as bad, went to the walk in centre, got told off for coming in with just a cough and nothing more serious. I couldn't tell the difference. I think medics can though by listening to your chest.

Christmastits · 03/02/2018 02:31

I'm totally messed up with my sleeping patterns now. Had a chat to the nice gynae man today. He said I was around 8 weeks pregnant and scans show a bit of tissue retained so I'm having a d&c tomorrow. He said that the miscarriage was caused by the sepsis and that my body just couldn't cope, it's sad but DH said that we can try again when I'm better and we can do something later in the year to mark it if I want to. I love this man so much.

Also spoke to the respiratory consultant today who said I was about an hour away from being vented at one point which made me cry as I didn't realise quite how unwell I've been. I knew I was sick but not that sick. I was on CPAP for a bit which is horrible- I hated the mask but then just fell asleep, it was the fighting the mask that made them talk about venting but I just fighting it. He said it could be up to six months before I'm back at work.

It's been an exhausting shitty month and I'm so glad I started this thread. I'm so glad I didn't wait until the morning.

Oh op, I’ve just read this full thread and it’s made me cry for you and your DH too. What an awful time you’ve had of it. I used to be a respiratory nurse many moons ago but remember enough of it to understand quite how sick you’ve been. You have to put you first now though and take all the time you need to get better.
Being in hospital does mess up your sleeping pattern but just listen to your body and sleep wherever you want to. You’ll regulate your sleep pattern again when you start to feel stronger.
I’m so very sorry for your loss; life is so bloody unfair sometimes.
Sending you big hugs and lots of good wishes. As a previous op said, you’re due some good luck now and I hope with all my heart that you get plenty.

RandomMess · 03/02/2018 08:30

ThanksI can't imagine the psychological struggle of coming to terms with it whilst still physically unwell.

Take on day at a time, where do you need to get to to go home? Are they still talking weeks stuck in there?

CakeUpWall · 03/02/2018 09:00

Thinking of you OP; I'm sorry that you have been so seriously unwell and are now suffering the devastation of losing your baby. Thanks
I'm grateful that you started this thread, as we lost a friend suddenly to sepsis last week. Not only have you sought assistance in time to save yourself, you are also helping to raise awareness of how serious it is. Thank you. Hoping that you recover very soon. Thanks

LostMyBaubles · 03/02/2018 09:00

Flowers take each day as it comes.
Glad you didn't wait until morning x

Christmastits · 05/02/2018 02:21

Thank you so much all of you. It's like a little pocket of escapism. I'm totally worn out by this whole situation. Looks like I'll be here for at least another 2 weeks which is a bit shit as I thought maybe I'd be on the Home straight now. :(

OP posts:
Christmastits · 05/02/2018 02:23

But the consultant quite right it said it's only been 2ish weeks since I was admitted. It's going to be at least another 2 weeks before they will even consider Home leave let alone Home :(. Can anyone recommend me things to watch when not asleep and things to do?

OP posts:
Christmastits · 05/02/2018 02:28

The d&c was a 1000% better than the last 2 times when I was told to wait for nature to take its course at home. I passed 70% of it high on morphine and I can't remember any of it bar the awful conversation with the consultant.

I'm so sad I failed myself and my husband with fucking this pregnancy up as well but I was very sick and unwell so maybe i shouldn't be so harsh on myself. The hca tonight is a bit of a cow :(

OP posts:
roundtable · 05/02/2018 02:40

Gosh I've just read your thread op. You've had an awful time.

You haven't failed, it's not your fault you got ill. I'm very sorry for your loss. Flowers

Mxyzptlk · 05/02/2018 02:50

Of course you didn't fail, you've had a lot of crap things happen to you, that couldn't be helped. Flowers
I really liked the film Sunshine on Leith. Smile

Christmastits · 05/02/2018 02:52

@Mxyzptlk I saw that at Christmas I loved it! Buying it now! Going to rent it

Belleende · 05/02/2018 04:50

Christmas I am a veteran of multiple miscarriages. Unless you have been throwing yourself off cliffs, this is a no blame thing. You did nothing to cause this and there is nothing you could have done to prevent it, there is no failure here, it's just biology.

If you are looking for distraction. On Netflix, the Unabomber series is fab, ditto Narcos, but that is quite full on. I did quite like the crown, I think that is perfect fodder for convalescence. Sounds like you need to really give in to your recovery and properly take your time.

Bobbiepin · 05/02/2018 05:10

Oh love you haven't failed. I would put money on the fact your DH is thrilled you are alive (the man sounds like a good egg) and just wants you home safe and well. You'll be out before you know it and then you can start looking to the future.

Distractions I've found are best in box set form - scandal, blacklist, Chicago fire, how to get away with murder (my own pneumonia favourite) and criminal minds are all fantastic (there's like 14 series of c.m. so plenty to keep you occupied). I've also heard good things about stranger things but haven't got around to watching it yet.

LEMtheoriginal · 05/02/2018 05:51

Good Lord!! I'm so sorry for everything you have been throughSad

Your DH sounds like a keeper

Flowers
RandomMess · 05/02/2018 07:37

Thanks do not give yourself a hard time over the miscarriage!!!

I know of a man who lost his wife and unborn child (7 months pregnant I think it was) to swine flu less than a year after they married. I am 100% sure your DH is utterly relieved you are still alive!!! Very scary to be told to stay with your partner and get their Mum in "just in case"

Thanks
ManyFloralBlouses · 05/02/2018 07:39

My toddler ds had it last year took him doctors 5 times over 3 weeks by the time we got referred for a chest x Ray it showed he’d had pneumonia but was over the worst so don’t think it’s something that’s always spotted sadly.

ManyFloralBlouses · 05/02/2018 07:41

So sorry op I hadn’t read the whole- sorry for your loss please be kind to yourself Flowers

WeeSassenach · 05/02/2018 08:16

Will echo what others have said, please do not blame yourself at all. You didn't ask to be Ill, your DH sounds like a wonderful man and I'm sure he'll just be relieved to have you on the mend. Lots of great shows on Netflix and Prime to keep your boredom at bay. Thanks
