To ask if you've had Pneumonia, how did you know it wasn't 'just a cough'

Christmastits · 20/01/2018 00:59

Had a cough since Tuesday, I've called in sick for the weekend. I'm not starting to feel any better.

I have a temp of 39.5 and my sputum is now brown, it's really hard to cough up anything but it's always there. Lots of vomiting caused by the coughing, I feel bloody awful.

Drs on Thursday said it was viral but I'm not so sure now, I feel like I have the flu, I also have a uti which I'm on antibiotics for but they won't treat a chest infection.

Is it time to go back to OOH tomorrow? Or tonight? I all of a sudden feel really unwell. I'll have to wake DH up to take me but I don't feel like this is just a cough any more

How are you feeling Christmastits? Hope you've continued to improve. Thanks

khajiit13 · 27/01/2018 20:49

Thinking of you OP

SersioulycanitgetWORSE · 27/01/2018 21:23

Poor op. What's does being vented mean?

Itscurtainsforyou · 27/01/2018 21:29

Seriously - being vented means that you have a breathing tube down your throat and the ventilator breathes for you. Mostly used when the patient is too weak to breathe on their own due to fighting illness, infection etc.

Namechanged36 · 27/01/2018 21:31

So sorry to read what an awful time you've had OP.
I hope everything starts getting better very soon Flowers

marvelmummy13 · 27/01/2018 21:33

It started as a pain in my chest in the middle. I thought it was a heart attack but it wasn't I went to a and e and had a slight tickly cough. This got worse over the few hours and eventually I couldnt even walk without feeling dizzy. I couldnt talk without feeeling out of breathe and coughing so much I couldnt breathe

marvelmummy13 · 27/01/2018 21:34

I hope you feel better soon Op I wouldnt wish it on anyone . best wishes

Speakeasy22 · 28/01/2018 10:54

How are you OP? Hope you’re feeling better.

MummaGiles · 28/01/2018 13:10

Only just seen this thread. You poor thing OP you’re really going through the wringer. My DF had pneumonia, pleurisy and an empyema in summer 2016 - was blue lighted to hospital the morning the brexit referendum result was announced. It was a pretty shitty day. He was in hospital for about 3 weeks. I can’t really give any advice on recovery because he also had lung cancer so that was a complicating factor (or cause - the infection seemed to stem from a bronchoscopy to take a biopsy as they were in the course of diagnosing him). From experience I know that will make you feel pretty dreadful. And with the mc too, I can’t imagine how you are right now. Take care of yourself.

NorthernLurker · 28/01/2018 16:16

Hope that that op is ok

Missingthesea · 28/01/2018 16:19

Northernlurker I've been wondering too. I hope she'll come back when she feels up to it, and give us an update.

Christmastits · 28/01/2018 17:43

Hey all sorry for the radio silence I've been sleeping 900% of the time. I couldn't sleep in HDU and I'm now on a normal ward near the nurses station in a room with a door that shuts so I'm sleeping a lot.

Thank you for kind words. DH has finally gone home. They said they're thinking of taking my chest drain out on Tuesday maybe. My arm hurts from the canula but I'm happy my central line is out!

OP posts:
NorthernLurker · 28/01/2018 20:00

That's good news op. You don't owe us any update, glad you have been sleeping!

Missingthesea · 29/01/2018 10:06

That's great news, Christmastits. Thank you for letting us know. Glad you're able to get plenty of sleep, it'll do you the world of good! x

Bobbiepin · 29/01/2018 22:39

If you're noticing cannula pain does that mean other pain is starting to ease off? Sleep is good, stock up on that. Any idea when they'll let you go home?

Mxyzptlk · 29/01/2018 22:48

It's good you're making progress and getting some decent rest, Christmas.

Christmastits · 29/01/2018 23:20

Yes my other pain is definitely decreasing! I think they want another week of IV antibiotics and then to reassess Home with oral ones. Consultant told me today it's a marathon not a sprint. Got into the chair today and felt like an elderly lady. It's really taken it out me.

I had chemotherapy earlier this year and my immune system is appalling the uti is a bacterial infection they just can't shift, and the chest infection has been caused by a fungus?

Mxyzptlk · 30/01/2018 01:36

Wow, you've been having a dreadful time all round. Flowers

Bobbiepin · 30/01/2018 05:59

Well if bad things really do come in three then I think you've ticked off three pretty shit events. Time for some good news to come your way I reckon. Getting out of bed is definitely a positive step. My pneumonia was a cold compared to yours but it took 3 or 4 weeks before I started feeling like myself again so take it slow and don't expect too much of yourself.

Gunpowder · 30/01/2018 06:49

You are a brave lady. I’m so sorry about your miscarriage. Flowers

Glad to hear you are on the mend.

Balaboosteh · 30/01/2018 07:24

Just read your whole thread OP and am sending you best wishes for a speedy recovery from this dreadful experience.

aaaaargghhhhelpme · 30/01/2018 07:52

Oh op you've really had a rough time. So so glad to hear you're on the mend. You have an awesome DH.

Take care of yourself. Sending you lots of very unmumsnetty hugs Flowers

Biglettuce · 30/01/2018 08:49

You have had a rough time you poor thing.

Sending get well wishes and Flowers

LostMyBaubles · 31/01/2018 16:51

Just read the full thread Flowers
Really sorry for your loss.
Hope you get good news once you've recovered properly.

How are you feeling today?

This is why I'm putting off seeing my mum and dad that have got the flu. I'm in first trimester of pregnancy and have immune probs (more likely to get sepsis and pneumonia waiting on blood results to come back to see if they can give immunisations)
Mum thinks I'm being odd dad agrees with me.

I really do hope you start to feel 'proper soon x x

Mxyzptlk · 01/02/2018 22:41

You're totally right on that one, Baubles.

OP, I hope you're resting and recovering. Flowers
