My dear other half offered me some toast, or which I took one bite and refused to eat..... He had used margarine not butter.

He said I am a stuck up bitch. in a light hearted jokey manner

So would you decline toast made with Marg? Envy

OP I just read your update about the asparagus.....THE HORROR!!

Abandon hope

Gingernaut · 20/01/2018 07:35

Butter only here too.

Dairy or peanut.

Shineystrawberrylover · 20/01/2018 07:37

YANBU. Can you even buy that stuff anymore? Howvery 1970's!

BekoLeGecko · 20/01/2018 07:41

Ok so what is margarine?
I eat some sunflower or olive spreads (I live outside of the UK and rurally, so it's not always possible to buy butter) but tbf I'm not sure I'd even notice a difference!
Can someone tell me what the difference is, what goes in margarine and if olive or sunflower spread is the same thing (and if so is my heart about to fall out and roll across the floor?)
Many thanks!!

wizzywig · 20/01/2018 07:49

Has anyone drawn a diagram?

Chienrouge · 20/01/2018 08:04

My mum used to put Gold spread on my toast/sandwiches. As a child I hated toast/sandwiches. It was only when I moved out I realised why I hated them so much. Now we’re a butter only household, I love both.

Idontdowindows · 20/01/2018 08:06

Whilst we are on the subject of food, the first time he cooked me asparagus he chipped the heads off and just cooked the stalks... He's a lost cause isn't he.

He what.....

I'm going for a lie down, this is too much.

pownckel · 20/01/2018 08:11

Bobstersmum

My mum says "best butter" too! 😆

Clandestino · 20/01/2018 08:13

Dextro, lock the door to the kitchen and keep the key! Your BF should be kept away at all costs. Throwing away asparagus heads is a serious culinary offence. Disgusting shite that's margarine instead of proper butter is a culinary crime. We are a Kerrygold household and no margarine crosses my threshold. Yuck!

FluffyHippo · 20/01/2018 08:16

How insufferably smug most of you sound! I'm lactose intolerant and the only spreads I can use are Stork and Vitalite - all other butter alternatives contain buttermilk. So don't sneer at other people's choices - sometimes it's not a choice at all!

JackmanAdmirer · 20/01/2018 08:25

Fluffyhippo it's a lighthearted thread!

And it's actually been very interesting!

TwitterQueen1 · 20/01/2018 09:09

MaddieMookins ROFLMAO at "I can't believe it's not Buddha..."

[no offence / disrespect / profanity intended here btw]

Fluffy chill! (you, not the butter btw, which, as we have established, should be kept at room temperature). We mean no harm.

Can me move on to the salted / unsalted question? I suspect purists will vote for unsalted, but I'm firmly in the salted camp.

gingerbread88 · 20/01/2018 09:10

I can only have real butter. As for calling you a stuck up bitch - that's a bit strong!

Atticusss · 20/01/2018 09:26

YANBU
Once I went into 5 different corner shops/convenience stores on the way home looking for butter. The last shop I looked in the fridge, saw yet another row of I can't believe it's not butter types and turned to leave and the cashier asked if there was something I was looking for. Butter said I, this is the fourth shop I've tried and I'm surprised none has any. Cashier said oh but we do! Looked at me like I was an idiot and said: 'look there; right in front of you we have flora, utterly butterly etc' I explained that was spread, not butter and they said 'I don't understand. Why isn't it butter? I didn't know there was another type of butter?' Lost causes. I felt so sad for them.

Atticusss · 20/01/2018 09:30

For those confused that margarine isn't sold here any more or asking about olive spreads. I think we all mean vegetable oil spreads when we say margarine. If you can't tell the difference between Flora/Bertoli/clover/utterly butterly and butter then you probably haven't had proper butter or you just have no taste buds.

If you have food intolerances, allergies or you are vegan then that is a different thing entirely. I've been long term dairy free before and vitalite was the most buttery out of the diary free spreads. Pure is awful. Flora diary free is awful.

ATeardropExplodes · 20/01/2018 09:32

One of the DC bought Flora Buttery instead of butter.

Have you tried parenting classes?

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 20/01/2018 09:34

More chefs than not use marg rather than butter for baking...but you are right, marg on toast is vomit inducing!

Madhairday · 20/01/2018 09:47

Yanbu op. Of course.

I went to a cafe the other day which promised crumpets with butter. Came accompanied by two sachets of that awful Willow stuff, the bright yellow thing that tastes... Well, nothing like butter. I challenged the staff politely and they said they thought it was butter and no one else had ever mentioned it. Huh.

I can bloody believe it's not butter, thank you.

Firesuit · 20/01/2018 09:47

Bunch of snobby luddites.

I think of margarine as Vegan butter. Given the choice between two almost identical foods, why not eat the plant-based one rather than one made from animal body fluids. Livestock farming is (relatively) bad for the planet.

I eat meat, I am looking forward to the day steaks will be grown from cell cultures in factories. You lot will be talking about the ancient and customary joy of chopping off a chicken's head and watching the headless animal running around sending a fountain of blood into the air from its neck. (Childhood memory of neighbours starting Sunday lunch. The dad thought this would be an entertaining site for a 5-year-old whose family did not keep chickens. He was right. Though the same man failed to convince me that the red and white striped walls in his son's bedroom were created with stripey paint. Not even showing me the alleged tins of stripey paint in his garage convinced me.)

Allthewaves · 20/01/2018 09:52

We've use flora dairy free as all my kids can't have dairy without being ill.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 20/01/2018 10:33

I don't eat margarine. Why was it in the house did you have to make a vegan cake?

Eatalot · 20/01/2018 10:35

Flies leave marg as its not foodworthy enough for them. FLIES!!!

BusterGonad · 20/01/2018 13:20

Not everyone can afford butter.....total snobbery imo. I eat the Lurpack style butter/marg. When I was skint I bought margarine. As for asparagus I don't care for it at all.

expatinscotland · 20/01/2018 13:28

'How insufferably smug most of you sound! I'm lactose intolerant and the only spreads I can use are Stork and Vitalite - all other butter alternatives contain buttermilk. So don't sneer at other people's choices - sometimes it's not a choice at all!'

Fluffy, Flora makes a dairy-free spread now and it's tasty. I have a butter churn and we make our own butter, but I am lactose intolerant so stick to my Flora.

It's not a choice, diary makes me very ill.

maddiemookins16mum · 20/01/2018 13:37

I was under the distinct impression this thread was lighthearted.
More fool me.
