My dear other half offered me some toast, or which I took one bite and refused to eat..... He had used margarine not butter.

He said I am a stuck up bitch. in a light hearted jokey manner

So would you decline toast made with Marg? Envy

That's what they want you to think.... really marg is made up with eleventy million chemicals where as butter is just the one (or two) natural ingredients.

Fats aren't bad for you, we need fats to be healthy, just eaten in moderation. Same applies to yogurt and olive oil.

This is second butter thread I've read this week! Are we experiencing a random cluster or is it time to ask for a separate Spreads section?

DextroDependant · 20/01/2018 00:02

I think we have established it's no to "Spreads" Saul the Butter Brigade would do.

Compare the list of ingredients on a pack of butter to a tub of 'spread'. It's quite an education.

Any fat in excess is bad for you. I get through a 250g pack of butter every two weeks and use sunflower oil for frying eggs. Non stick pans for chops, chicken etc so no fat required. A couple of dashes of sesame oil for fried rice.

It's all good at Weezol Towers cholesterol wise.

What's the difference

WHAT!!!!

You may as well ask what is the difference between a freshly laid turd and a chocolate mousse. They may look sort of the same, but there is a world of difference.

maddiemookins16mum · 20/01/2018 00:13

I got one of these as a comedy Christmas pressie a few years ago, that's how much we love butter in this house. DH said he got it for the slogan 'I can't believe it's not Buddha'. Bless him.

BF just called me a stuck up bitch.
peterpansbrother · 20/01/2018 00:15

I do not know what the MARGinal difference is between the two. I am sure there are some similarities, if we look back in history I think there is a wideSPREAD issue with all this

sinceyouask · 20/01/2018 00:16

I don't like either. Toast is for cheese or sometimes mayonnaise.

Bettercallsaul1 · 20/01/2018 00:17

Doris Grin A foul but essentially undeniable comparison.

mumeeee · 20/01/2018 00:22

Flora buttery is not marge its a spread to put on bread and perfectly acceptable on toast. We use flora all the time here so YABU

nokidshere · 20/01/2018 00:22

Even worse dh brought home Lurpack LIGHT last week ..... it's even worse than Marge Shock

I need president butter....

DorisDangleberry · 20/01/2018 00:26

Flora buttery is not marge

WRONG

I have just Googled the ingredients:

  • Car tyres
  • Cow snot
  • Crushed cockroaches
  • and less than 0.1% real butter
DiegoMadonna · 20/01/2018 00:28

I thought everyone ate margarine

BigBaboonBum · 20/01/2018 00:28

Proper butter or not at all

LineysRuff · 20/01/2018 00:30

Vegan versions of 'budder' can be delicious. Often it's the salt people are craving.

DiegoMadonna · 20/01/2018 00:32

I like both. But I like most things.

Most margarines haven't had any trans fats in for years. They all changed their recipes after the whole backlash a few years back.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 20/01/2018 00:34

Scottish salted butter not kept in the fridge but in a butter dish on the counter.

DiegoMadonna · 20/01/2018 00:37

Harvard Health says:

Today the butter-versus-margarine issue is really a false one. From the standpoint of heart disease, butter is on the list of foods to use sparingly mostly because it is high in saturated fat, which aggressively increases levels of LDL. Margarines, though, aren't so easy to classify. The older stick margarines that are still widely sold are high in trans fats, and are worse for you than butter. Some of the newer margarines that are low in saturated fat, high in unsaturated fat, and free of trans fats are fine as long as you don't use too much (they are still rich in calories).

Healthier alternatives to butter or margarine include olive oil and other vegetable oil–based spreads, which contain beneficial mono- and polyunsaturated fats. Next time you tear into a warm loaf of bread or roll, consider dipping it in olive oil rather than coating it in butter. If you're trying to lower your cholesterol, stanol-based spreads (for example, Benecol and Take Control) are even better, since regular use can help lower LDL cholesterol levels.

SeaToSki · 20/01/2018 00:39

I like to eat things that are made from things would recognize walking down the street and that I can imagine the process to produce. A cow, a wheat plant, an olive - which is quite greasy, so I can imagine squeezing them to produce oil. But vegetable oil? Which vegetables are greasy enough to squeeze out oil? Onions, turnips? Sesame oil makes sense to me, but rapeseed and corn oil. Those yellow flowers and corn on the cob dont seem very oily. It makes me think that to produce oil from those plants there must be high temperatures and pressure and chemicals changing the structure of the plants. I'd rather not eat stuff that is altered in that way, marg included. Butter, olive and nut oils (in moderation) do for me.

tiptopteepe · 20/01/2018 00:52

I just used 'baking block' on my crumpets... and it was supermarkets own brand as well. I darent look at the ingredients its probs just actual plastic.
I wish I had standards as high as yours because yes butter is nicer. But I cant resist any type of breakfast goods offerred to me regardless of the spread used. I admit I have no class.

Christmastits · 20/01/2018 01:03

Even on diets I refuse to use anything other than good salted butter. Just allow more weight watchers points for it. I can't bear 'spread' Envy

MrsMozart · 20/01/2018 01:17

I see all the basis are covered - LTB, burn the kitchen down, get the exterminators in - so I'll just sen you a hand hold and hope you recover quickly and well from your ordeal m'duck.
