Does anyone else comfort watch TV?

I was thinking about what a weirdo I am- because that's what weirdos do!- earlier, because of my all time favourite TV programme (something got me thinking about it).
Then I got to thinking, is comfort viewing a favourite programme a thing? A bit like comfort eating? AIBU to just want to slob out and rewatch A Place In Slovakia or A Place In Spain every now and again?!

Doc Martin is my comfort watch

It’s easy to watch and always enjoyable and makes me smile

thenightsky · 18/01/2018 23:53

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills or Orange County. I'll watch New York at a push but I don't like any of the others. I want to be Lisa Van der Pump.

dingdongdigeridoo · 19/01/2018 00:02

Mine is the Gilmore Girls. Must have seen it 100 times. It’s so cosy.

I didn’t like when they made new episodes. It felt so wrong!

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 19/01/2018 00:19

When life gets stressful there is nothing better than comfort tv it makes me feel like everything is ok in the world, my favourites are any Agatha Christie but particularly Miss Marple being played by Julia Mackenzie, Midsomer Murders but not with the new guy who can’t act to save his life, Johnathan Creek, Death in Paradise, Only Fools, Vicar of Dibley and Birds of a Feather, all so calming and comforting!

PrivateParkin · 19/01/2018 07:47

Totally agree - forgot to mention this. Those new episodes don't exist to me! It's Tom Barnaby or nowt as far as I'm concerned.

Huggybear16 · 19/01/2018 08:26

Awww I forgot about Scrubs! I was gutted when they removed it from Netflix. Also love Family Guy!

kaitlinktm · 19/01/2018 10:41

Allso nature programmes make me feel safe to.

Except when they start eating each other Sad

Forgot about Midsomer Murders (I have up to series 16 on DVD) Blush

Have never watched The House of Eliott - was it good? (Might be worth another DVD purchase).

Also - Sherlock Holmes (with Jeremy Brett) - again I have them all on DVD Blush

Ooh - and Cadfael! (Yes, I have them too).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/01/2018 10:51

I comfort-watch.

After an incredibly busy and exhausting time recently it was heaven to. collapse on the sofa and watch some of my recorded comfort-food. Marple/Poirot/Endeavour/Vera/Taggart, etc. The really old Taggart with Mark McManus is a current favourite.

HerBigChance · 19/01/2018 11:06

Yes, Jeremey Brett Sherlock Holmes are great and Columbo is a sunday comforter.

Definitely Mark McManus as Taggart - they are comforting in a different way. He was an excellent character and there is humour in his response to things because you know his character so well.

Agree that the earlier Midsomers are better. Another fab comfort, especially the mad paganish ones.

MadamMinacious · 19/01/2018 11:21

Oh @Thesmallthings

I have just started watching Criminal Minds - really enjoying it, I can see why you comfort watch it.

and @DeStijl YY to Charmed - I must have seen every episode at least 5 times

LifeLaundry · 19/01/2018 11:21

Dinnerladies is my main one, although I havent been able to watch it since Victoria Wood died.

makeourfuture · 19/01/2018 11:55

Yes. I LOVE Murder She Wrote. It's absolute rubbish but it gives me a warm, happy glow that Jessica can sort the whole world out in her calm, gentle way.

Is it coincidence that murder always happens wherever Jessica goes?

JakeBallardswife · 19/01/2018 12:11

@LaLaLolly Ausreservoir as we say in Tilling...

Love things for that warm glow. Really like, Gilmore Girls, white collar, and Blue Peter.

MissClareRemembers · 19/01/2018 12:46

@LifeLaundry

I bought a copy of Victoria Wood Presents about a month before she died. I’d watched it all before the news of her death broke and had been about to rewatch dinner ladies for 9 billionth time but it took me ages to be able to watch it again. Such a sad loss.

@kaitlinktm I love The House Of Eliott. It gets a lot of flack but it’s just soooo satisfying. And the costumes, houses etc are beautiful. Also worth watching the French & Saunders spoof, The House Of Idiot. Grin

DaysofWineandNeurosis · 19/01/2018 13:21

I comfort watch Spaced, Red Dwarf and Boston Legal. Brooklyn Nine Nine has a lot of comfort watch potential too. I've seen them all at least twice and it's so nice but still funny.

April229 · 19/01/2018 13:24

Gossip girl all the way :)

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 19/01/2018 13:26

I don't comfort watch TV, I comfort MN! 😂

kaitlinktm · 19/01/2018 15:13

I do both - multi-tasking comfort all the way!

VerbenaGirl · 19/01/2018 19:14

Sat Yes to the Dress for me. Has to be the New York one though. Pure escapism!

DarkDarkNight · 19/01/2018 20:53

Cheesy detective shows. I bought box sets of Murder She Wrote years ago I love it, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling Blush. Similarly shows like Diagnosis Murder and Monk.

Also old comedy series I've seen seen many times where I know the characters and plot and can zone in and out of. Things like Seinfeld, Frasier and MAS*H.

I get quite attached to American sitcoms that are pretty middle of the road in terms of quality. Things like Jack and Jill, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Jesse, Grounded For Life.

I watch far too much tv...

DarkDarkNight · 19/01/2018 20:54

Just reading through, agree with To The Manor Born, perfect comfort tv. As Time Goes By as well.

Fallenmadonnawiththebigboobies · 19/01/2018 21:16

Midsomer Murders and Jonathan Creek are my ultimate comfort TV. Oh, and Grace & Frankie - back on Netflix - hurrah!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 19/01/2018 21:18

kaitlin I can't do that, I can only get WiFi in the bedroom, and no TV in here. 😢

catlovingdoctor · 19/01/2018 21:19

Not so much telly, but I have a strong liking for YouTube documentaries about the Cold War. If I've had a bad day or want to zone out there's nothing like a doc about 1950s Russian bombers

Ilovelblue · 19/01/2018 21:27

If I just want to zone out in front of the telly and there's nothing on worth watching, I will binge watch any episode of the three series of Our Girl (Lacey Turner/Michelle Keegan/Ben Aldridge/Luke Pasqualino). Fourteen episodes to choose from and I can virtually quote all the dialogue word for word.
