Why are MEN being offered Cervical Cancer Screening...

What is going on in this country?

If you are registered as a female with your GP you are being offered screenings...even if you don't possess the organ.

@beansonapost That's a difficult question and I assume will be dealt with by the GP in question - although a nonbinary or genderfluid person with a uterus and a cervix will, hopefully, still be reminded to attend their smear test.

Similarly I hope trans men with a cervix would still get the letters.

derangedmermaid · 15/01/2018 01:08

This is such a fucking non issue.

I'd be more worried about smokers who drain NHS resources but won't put the cancer sticks away than a made up quandry over a letter for a non existent cervix.

Or the trees, do the NHS use recycled paper? Hmm

PerspicaciaTick · 15/01/2018 01:08

So long as transgender individuals understand that amending their NHS records to reflect their gender (instead of their sex) may mean that they don't receive appropriately targeted health information, I think that is their choice to make.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 15/01/2018 01:10

'The Terfs'

Abusive language. Excellent

HelenaDove · 15/01/2018 01:12

I doubt anyone will actually make or attend an appointment that doesnt need one.

Booboobooboo84 · 15/01/2018 01:13

Has anyone ever been sent a letter with an appointment rather than just a reminder to book one? It’s an invitation not a summons ffs. Trans Hysteria at its finest here.

condepetie · 15/01/2018 01:14

@AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth Oh, I'm sorry. Would you prefer me to use the full term? Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist. Is it the radical bit you object to? No, I expect not. I'm a feminist, probably quite radical, and entirely trans-inclusionary. What are you? Are you the same, but trans-exclusionary?

If so, you're a TERF, and it's not abusive. It's a fact.

Booboobooboo84 · 15/01/2018 01:14

Plus a reminder to get a cervix check would prob prompt them to think nope don’t have that but better get my prostrate check instead

derangedmermaid · 15/01/2018 01:15

I had to google terf. Is that really a thing? That sounds hateful. Should it have a place in feminism?

condepetie · 15/01/2018 01:16

@derangedmermaid I am so happy for you that you've never heard it before.

MN is full of it. Read any thread about a transgender woman. India Willoughby or Lily Madigan for example!

Funny how it's never about a transgender man.

It has no place in feminism. Thank you for looking it up.

Vicxy · 15/01/2018 01:17

The issue I see with this, is that surely women who identify as men will not be offered nthe screening.

I don't think anyone should be registered in a medical setting under the opposite sex. What good does that do anyone?

Choccywoccyhooha · 15/01/2018 01:18

I think that most transgender people will be very informed about what their needs are in terms of which checks they need, which letters to ignore, and what changes to look out for in their own bodies. Automated letters being sent is a non-issue and the most sensible way to do it, the issue would be if letters stopped being sent in order to avoid offending transwomen. But this isn't happening.

Vicxy · 15/01/2018 01:19

The word terf is applied to anyone who is less than accepting of 'male and female are not real things' and 'biology is not important'. Or lesbians who reject people with penises as sexual partners. Those nasty lesbians are who are called terfs the most.

Gingernaut · 15/01/2018 01:20

FtM will not routinely be offered breast screening but MtF will. Confused

derangedmermaid · 15/01/2018 01:21

@condepetie yeah, I feel quite sick. Definitely not MY feminism.

Last time I was pregnant and on a parenting site I found out that having sex whilst literally breastfeeding the baby was a thing though, from more than one person, equally as disturbing.

Every days a school day.

Vicxy · 15/01/2018 01:21

Anyone who has not heard the word before or wants to know more, look at how it is used then make up your mind if 'terfs' are actually hateful, or if its the people using that word who are the hateful ones.

terfisaslur.com/cotton-ceiling/

A few sections on there. Should be of interest to anyone new to this topic and who does not know quite how far 'transactivism' (which is actually to the detriment of transsexual people) has progressed in recent years.

So this person decides not to show up/ make an appointment.

will statistics now say "fewer women having cervical screening done" by whatever percentage etc.

Same with prostate exam...person doesn't show up.

What would be the response from the NHS? put more money into informing people of the importance of having screenings done... however much it cost, it will cost. Simply because we are given the choice to ignore biological facts?

I'm not here for a bun fight, it's a genuine question, as I cannot see how this is good for either.

And I cannot see how receiving an invite for an organ you don't have might prompt you to have the one you do have (gland) checked. It might, but I don't think it would be top of your list...hence the invites/reminders in the first place.

Oh yay, here they are!

I'd like to know how "transactivism" is to the detriment of "transssexual" people (we call them transgender people now, by the way)

I mean, one of the leading LGBT+ news sites is concerned:
www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/04/16/what-is-a-terf-and-why-should-you-be-worried/

And actual transgender people are concerned:
transadvocate.com/you-might-be-a-terf-if_n_10226.htm

But no, being trans-exclusionary in your feminism is juuuust fine, right?

condepetie · 15/01/2018 01:27

@beansonapost I'd argue that yes, more money into informing people about the importance of smear tests is a good investment, since just recently there's been news about how less people are having theirs done.

But also the amount of transgender women receiving letters about their smear test is so low that I don't think it makes much of a dent.

Beansonapost · 15/01/2018 01:29

Yes, the breast cancer one is also odd... but I think the assumption there is you would have had a double mastectomy so little to no breast tissue.

I don't think that is very safe either!

I'll say it again.

THEY SEND THESE INVITES OUT TO WOMEN WHO HAVE HAD THEIR CERVIXES REMOVED. HAVE BEEN FOR DECADES.

You're just pissed because... god knows why you're pissed, it's ridiculously hyperbolic nonsense. Hmm

Vicxy · 15/01/2018 01:32

Do you even know what transactivism of today looks like? It used to help the people it was supposed to help..it no longer does.

And transgender is a label that covers the majority of the world..anyone who is not 100% feminine (as a female) or 100% masculine (as a male) comes nder the transgender umbrella. As do crossdressers and drag queens.

PerspicaciaTick · 15/01/2018 01:33

I think you are right that the statistics will show a small fall in the take up rates for screening. In theory it should be possible to adjust the figures to take this into account, provided the NHS have the time and resource to do the work.

stitchglitched · 15/01/2018 01:33

we call them transgender people now by the way

Who is 'we'? There are plenty of transwomen who prefer to describe themselves as transsexual.
