Jealous Guy

Written and performed by a man who admitted he was violent towards women.

Just that really.

And Blurred Lines...

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 15/01/2018 17:30

It won't kill us to stop and listen to the lyrics that pervade our airwaves and, you know, think.

I think that is way too nuanced a position for some people to understand. The anti-PC brigade are so caught up in painting others as millennial snowflakes that they can't grasp the idea that people can have conflicting opinions on a subject.

For example, I'm a die-hard Friends fan but I can definitely see how it's problematic, even by the standards of the 90s.

mrsquadsticles · 15/01/2018 17:36

Not read the full thread- 300+ comments so sorry if this has been mentioned...

anyone know what/who that song singer was who sang a really catchy song, but I think it was about abuse (I never heard that side of it, just like the song). He’s a really tall guy, I can picture him singing against a white/black background and women confined to approach him and go back for more. I’m thinking he was in a relationship with a famous woman- Miley Cyrus or something. Sorry- VAGUE!!

TheGoldenBowl · 15/01/2018 17:41

I totally agree about 'Friends' Rita Absolutely love it but, at the same time, can see some unpleasant attitudes that are just part and parcel of it.

mrsquadsticles · 15/01/2018 17:41

Robin Thicke!!!

Theromanempire · 15/01/2018 17:41

Msquadsticle are you thinking Blurred Lines with Robin Thicke and Pharrel Williams? Robin Thicke famously performed with Miley Cyrus at some awards ceremony. He isn't particularly tall though - just a complete slimeball Hmm

Theromanempire · 15/01/2018 17:42

Crossed posts Grin

Oldmum56 · 15/01/2018 17:44

Have you nothing more to be concerned about. Look around you do some that can make a differance, you will eat yourself up wasting time on all the bad things in this world.
Or Question your motive for this comment, we have laws to protect us, do you need to talk to someone are you a victim, no offence ment but you may need to reach out.
I am feed up with funeral insurance on TV, as I find it depressing, I also fell that charities over do it so now it has no effect, more so it has a reverse effect and stops people giving

mrsquadsticles · 15/01/2018 17:50

Yes Roman! My mind is clearly a jumbled mess!

Shell4429 · 15/01/2018 17:50

I listen to Gary Glitter regularly. I refuse to let his behaviour as a person ruin my childhood memories of music.
There are lots of songs that talk about borderline paedophilia such as Young Girl, You’re Sixteen, Claire, Does Your Mother Know. I am guessing all these are played from time to time. History can’t be airbrushed.

VictoriaOKeefe · 15/01/2018 17:51

I hate the "people in the past didn't have our views! lets attack and ban their work without the slightest regard for their different circumstances".

the 1953 Bugs Bunny/Yosemite Sam cartoon Southern Fried Rabbitt is (probably accidentally) racist and (probably accidentally) pro-Confederate in it's intended attempt to mine humour from Yosemite Sam still guarding the Mason-Dixon Line 88 years after the end of the Civil War.

I still enjoy Bugs tormenting Sam. I still laugh at the ending with Sam threatening to shoot the New York Yankees in Chattanooga.

History is complicated. People are complicated.

cantucciniamaretto · 15/01/2018 17:53

The anti-PC brigade are so caught up in painting others as millennial snowflakes that they can't grasp the idea that people can have conflicting opinions on a subject

No they aren't. You haven't understood what people are saying.

The thread is asking why its ok to play a song from what, 40 years ago?, on the radio now. If you take every song off the playlists that people can find an issue with now there will be no songs left.

The people complaining about how offensive Friends is both misunderstand what they are complaining about and have deeply problmatic opinions anyway. Tweeting about Chandler being a transphobic bigot because he won't call his drag queen father a woman or admit he has two mothers? That so wasn't the point, and it also fails to see that children of transexuals have their own issues that they should be a lot more sympathetic too.

So much whining, such little understanding.

PolarBearkshire · 15/01/2018 18:00

How many scientists artists designers businessmen have commited crimes? Does it mean we will go all to the forest and distance ourselves from everything?

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 15/01/2018 18:02

It’s a song ffs, enjoy it for all that it is! Do not try to interpret anything else, just enjoy the fucking song.

There are a million bloody songs that make light of young love, , unrequited love, etc. It’s not a life plan, it’s a song. Grrrrr

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 15/01/2018 18:05

King Henry 8th killed two of his wives. History should stop teaching children about misogynistic kings, all history pre 1990s must be outlawed!

CathyM1966 · 15/01/2018 18:06

I always thought Lennon was a sanctimonious twat but when I saw the video of him poking fun at intellectually impaired people, I decided then that his music would never be played in my house.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 15/01/2018 18:08

If you take every song off the playlists that people can find an issue with now there will be no songs left.

But NOBODY is proposing banning anything. Asking why it's OK to play a certain song (as the OP did) doesn't equate to saying "Ban it now!"

The OP is simply trying to generate a debate over how what is socially acceptable changes over time and why some things stay so whilst others not. Let me ask you a question. Is there anything, any views, any adverts, any products, eg. a golliwog that once WAS perfectly mainstream that you personally would now listen to / watch and think "whoa that is not ok!".

So much whining, such little understanding.

Right back at you. Whining and understanding are subjective and to me those people who get outraged about other people having a debate on the internet are the whining, hard of understanding snowflakes.

lindaf100 · 15/01/2018 18:10

Please get a life. You know where the off switch is!

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 15/01/2018 18:10

King Henry 8th killed two of his wives. History should stop teaching children about misogynistic kings, all history pre 1990s must be outlawed!

Yes! Because that's EXACTLY what the OP said Biscuit

Nimmykins · 15/01/2018 18:11

Adele's stalking in Someone Like You

GerardButlersBird · 15/01/2018 18:13

I don't like it when you break me honey
Why'd you have to do that?
Tell me when you'll make these tears keep falling
Do you feel like a man?

And later...

Daddy I've fallen for a monster
Somehow he's scaring me to death
He's big and he's bad
I love him like mad
Momma, he's the best I ever had
Daddy I've fallen for a monster
He got a black heart

IMHO this song, Black Heart, is not good at all Confused. I'm not overly fussed about song lyrics being unacceptable usually tho..

NotForSale · 15/01/2018 18:14

Not read the comments
What about Michael Jackson? Great musician but bit of a peadophile

GerardButlersBird · 15/01/2018 18:15

Talking of stalking yes Adele... ye Gods... her songs make me want to scream STOP HANKERING AFTER OTHER PEOPLE'S HUSBANDS, WEIRDO!! Get over it already!

Oh and remember Dido and White Flag? The ultimate bunny boiler, that one!

Eltonjohnssyrup · 15/01/2018 18:15

But NOBODY is proposing banning anything. Asking why it's OK to play a certain song (as the OP did) doesn't equate to saying "Ban it now!"

Stopping a song from being publicly played is akin to a ban.

ISpentTheDayInBed · 15/01/2018 18:20

I heard this on Radio 6 a few weeks back en.wikipedia.org/wiki/He_Hit_Me_(And_It_Felt_Like_A_Kiss) I had to admit I did a double take. I was surprised that it was written by Carol King, who has written some fantastic songs
