Jealous Guy

Written and performed by a man who admitted he was violent towards women.

Just that really.

OP posts:
georgie262 · 14/01/2018 19:00

Jealous guy is actually one of my favourite John Lennon songs.

Andrewofgg · 14/01/2018 19:34

It's like Mary Whitehouse on speed

Now there's a grim thought Grin

NotACleverName · 14/01/2018 19:38

Mary Whitehouse on speed would be a great band name.

MsHarry · 14/01/2018 19:56

Loving you is DEF NOT about motherhood!!!!

"Everytime that we.....oooh....I'm more in love with you."

Justanotherlurker · 14/01/2018 20:09

Loving you is DEF NOT about motherhood!!!!

She is on record saying it was, she padded it out with lyrics with regards to wanting her daughter to go to sleep so she could spend time with her DH, she has gone on record as saying that the majority of the song was already a lullaby, even wiki alludes to it.

According to the liner notes from Riperton's compilation CD Petals, the melody for "Lovin' You" was created to be a distraction for her baby daughter (Maya Rudolph) so that Minnie and her husband Richard could hang out. Maya was in the studio with her mother on the day it was recorded and Riperton can be heard singing her daughter's name at the end, but only in the unedited or album version. The song fades out early in the radio edit because the disc jockeys felt that the repeated "Maya" was being overdone and that it would be misunderstood as a Mayan chant.

MsHarry · 14/01/2018 20:10

Doesn't matter , the end result is not a lullaby.

LadyFairfaxSake · 14/01/2018 20:11

I think you'll find Brown Sugar is about heroin, though it's been linked to Jagger's fling with Marsha Hunt.

SuperBeagle · 14/01/2018 20:19

Because people are still allowed to enjoy someone's work while feeling conflicted (at best) about the person.

It's that simple.

ragged · 14/01/2018 20:20

I just looked up the song OP meant (JG), I never know which title goes with which ballad.

I don't hear it as being about violence. Confused.
I can't stretch to understanding how much people infer things .. they want or are afraid of or have a vendetta about. I need something tangible, not "I could imagine this is what that person (I already decided not to like) meant".

Eltonjohnssyrup · 14/01/2018 20:48

This thread, incidentally, isn't about 'banning' songs or creative material, although the OP keeps being accused of it!

Stopping things being played on the radio for moral reasons is akin to a ban.

I'm not aware of it as a movement as such. Can you enlighten me, genuinely?

Then you're not paying attention. There are posts on here full of 'ban this filth' attacks of the vapours. Anything which offends what a various followers of various ideologies are carping about today.

It's like when Lady Chatterly's Lover was supposed to lead to the inorexable decline of the working classes morals if it became freely available. People claiming that they are the moral superiors of all the weak minded inferior little people whose fragile minds they need to protect. It's awfully elitist.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 14/01/2018 20:57

Then you're not paying attention.

Erm. Right.

There are posts on here full of 'ban this filth' attacks of the vapours

Oh right. So this new Puritanism of banning everything is confined to what you've read and got irritated by on MN? Grin

Anything which offends what a various followers of various ideologies are carping about today

Confused

This is what I haven't been paying attention to? Grin

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 14/01/2018 21:01

Where have you read this on this thread? Can you point to the posts so that I can give a meaningful response?

Oblomov18 · 14/01/2018 21:13

Is this song not about Jerry Hall? She dated Brian Ferry. Then ran off with Mick Jagger?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 14/01/2018 21:42

BetteDavis, I suspect you're being wilfully obtuse. If you have genuinely missed the zeitgeist go and sign up for Twitter. It's an eye opener.

I didn't invent the name 'the new Puritanism. It's so prevalent it actually has a name which is in fairly common usage.

It's not my place to educate you about the current state of culture.

I suspect however you know exactly what I mean but it serves your agenda to pretend that you don't.

AlmondPearls · 14/01/2018 21:42

Ladyfairfax

It's not about heroin. Brown Sugar was originally names Brown Pussy, but it was later changed as it was thought to be way too crude.
There's references to black girls (later changed to young girls in some future recordings), slavers, cotton fields, whips, Cajun queen's...

Even Mick changed the first verse in some of his live performances because he realised how controversial it was.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 14/01/2018 21:42

BetteDavis, I didn't come up with the phrase 'new puritanism'. It's so prevelant it has a name which is in common usage. If you really have missed the zeitgeist on this you should open a twitter account. It's an eye opener.

Although I suspect you're being wilfully obtuse because it serves your agenda to pretend it's not happening.

greendale17 · 14/01/2018 21:47

What about this song- We are Young by Fun. -

My seat’s been taken by some sunglasses asking ’bout a scar,
and I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you’re trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things The holes in my apologies, you know I’m trying hard to take it back

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 14/01/2018 21:52

Although I suspect you're being wilfully obtuse because it serves your agenda to pretend it's not happening.

What on earth is 'my agenda'? On the contrary, I have repeatedly said on this thread that I'm undecided and mulling the issue over.

I asked you a question, perfectly politely, upthread. Your replies have been inexplicably chippy and somewhat rude. As you don't seem able to hold a civilized exchange, then I suggest that we leave it here.

TheGoldenBowl · 14/01/2018 21:53

I think some people misunderstood the basic idea of 'is it ok to play this on the radio.' I'm pretty sure OP wasn't advocating the idea that 'they' should ban the song. It's more a case of 'why do we still enjoy so much misogynistic bullshit in songs?'

Some people can't stand the idea of analysing or challenging the status quo. They throw around the term 'political correctness' as if it's the worst insult ever, and I can't help thinking they read the Daily Telegraph.

pisacake · 14/01/2018 22:09

greendaley17, the composer says 'no'

I can't believe I Drove All Night always pops up on these threads. As a PP said, it's clearly about sexual passion and is in the context of a passionate relationship. I also don't think there's anything wrong with In the Summertime. Under my Thumb on the other hand, urgh.

Clawdy · 14/01/2018 22:13

It's Golden Brown by The Stranglers that's about heroin, not Brown Sugar.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 14/01/2018 22:15

"Surely Lolita is about an unreliable narrator and a deluded middle aged man? Nothing very arousing about that."

I wish I could tell you that as a 17 year old I did not find it so. Am clearly in good company (Sting).

The idea that the extended seduction in Lolita is not sexy is a convenient position shared by its super arrogant author. Hey, perhaps I was the only one aroused and book is pure as driven snow? No, didn't think so.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/01/2018 22:29

Well Don't Stand So Close To Me obviously differs from Lolita in the fact that in the song the girl has the hots for her teacher. Lolita obviously doesn't have the hots for the guy who basically abuses her; it's all in his head.

The song is about a young girl's crush on her teacher and him trying to resist it.
