Ok, I was probably over exaggerating (a little)

We need to take FIL away on hols. It needs to be sunny, short haul and somewhere very "Brits abroad" but not horrific as we have a 1 year old.

I thought costa brava might have nailed it but looking into it is that the nice costa? Do I need costa Blanca instead?

Branleuse

Same here :)

SkyIsTooHigh · 13/01/2018 18:07

Go mid range AI in Majorca. He can have a fry up for breakfast and chips every day, and you can have more adventurous food, pool, beach, daytrips.

I wouldn't want the 4 hour flight to the Canaries with a one year old, especially if flying low cost or charter so no entertainment.

bakingaddict · 13/01/2018 18:09

My worst case of a Brits abroad type place was Chaeweng, Ko Samui in Thailand. It was in 2000 and it had lots of bars all offering full English breakfasts, proper English lager and ales as well as Premiership football. Throw into the mix in-yer-face prostitution and it was 100x worse than Lloret-de-Mar where i've also been to. I quite liked Lloret and Tossa de Mar up the road was a very pleasant town.

My point is just go somewhere nice because you can get Brits abroad in the most unlikely of places. Find somewhere that has cross-generational appeal, is relatively flat for your FIL and has a lively restaurant/bar scene for evenings but don't purposefully go looking for a shit holiday

mrsBeverleyGoldberg · 13/01/2018 18:11

Well, I liked Tenerife and Mallorca and Lanzarote you bunch of snobs!Grin

blibblibs · 13/01/2018 18:12

Maltas capital Valletta is the European city of culture this year and they've done a lot to clean it up but if you have DC I wouldn't recommend it.
Very few sandy beaches, lots of hills, waterpark is small and needs a lot of tlc. Aquarium is OK, but small. You'd struggle to fill a week but you can find the traditional English breakfast anywhere!
Their local beer, Cisk is good though so not all bad!

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2018 18:14

BitchQueen
Malta was fascinating. The food was good, the history fascinating (definitely get tickets for the Hypogeum and go see Haqar Qim)
but the utter lack of birds and evidence of illegal shooting all over the island wound us up a LOT by the end of the trip.

lifechangesforeverinjuly · 13/01/2018 18:15

Costa Dorada - Salou.
Plenty of English bars & restaurants but overall it's nice, friendly & clean with a beautiful beach.

Mintylizzy9 · 13/01/2018 18:15

Another vote for nerja, I took my parents (in their 70’s) and my three year old in September. Booked a villa with private pool and it was lovely. Plenty of English stuff but not in your face and all very civilised. Neither of my parents are travellers so it was a brilliant compromise.

It was my first villa holiday and I’m converted. Will be going again!

I booked with villa plus (including the flights) and they were excellent. If they still have villa anabel on their books you won’t be disappointed (will need car tho) 😎

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 13/01/2018 18:19

Minty we stayed in that villa as well. DH was having kittens squeezing our hire car up the dirt track with all the local pickup trucks bombing past and forcing us into hedges Grin. Great pool though.

MrsSchadenfreude · 13/01/2018 18:21

Nerja. Or the north coast of Majorca - Alcudia or Can Picafort.

TSSDNCOP · 13/01/2018 18:27

Majorca: Alcudia, Pollensa or Cala Millor.

Blackteadrinker77 · 13/01/2018 18:28

Santa ponsa, and if that isn't lively enough for FIL Magaluf is just ten minutes away :)

Amanduh · 13/01/2018 18:29

Benidorm is the worst place I’ve ever been in my entire life.
Lots of nice places: costa del sol, marbella and surrounding is lovely. But expensive. Majorca is nice. Alcudia, c’an picafort. Tenerife is a bit hit and miss loud brits abroad but overall is ok. Lanzarote can be nice too

MrsSchadenfreude · 13/01/2018 18:29

Ha - just seen that loads of others have recommended Nerja too! We stayed at the Nerja Club Hotel, which was lovely (fabulous staff). It's on the edge of town, so quiet, and a downhill walk to the beach (you could get a taxi back if you wanted). Hotel was full of over 60s - Brits in beige, pale pink, pale blue and grey and Swedes in bright colours, clogs and looking fantastically stylish. Food was good too - a buffet, so something for everyone, always a Spanish speciality, chips and a grill and loads of salads and stuff.

blankets4ever · 13/01/2018 18:34

Tossa de Mar on Costa brava is Brits abroad but not completely grubby and vile. Not been to Loret de Mar but think similar. If you have a hire car there are nicer smaller more authentic Spanish places to visit and Barcelona nearby.

As others have said Nerja is a good balance of Brits abroad without being too tacky and beautiful villages inland and lovely Granada not so far away if you want to escape. I so loved Granada when I visited many moons ago. We stayed in a villa in the hills behind Nerja and visited it just for one day. Definitely felt stepping back to Britsville but not too awful.

trilbydoll · 13/01/2018 18:38

Malta is lovely but not pushchair friendly.

Mallorca is good, we went to Cala Millor last year and it was lovely. Very little open out of season tho, not Brits abroad at all.

Fuerteventura? Worth the flight for guaranteed sun?

BitchQueen90 · 13/01/2018 18:45

To the PP who asked - hotel I'm staying at is in Sliema? It's a 5 star place so I hope it is nice!

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2018 18:51

bitch
Sliema is nice - the seafront promenade with lots of restaurants is fun
or you walk through to the Valetta side and watch the people watchers
if you are 5 star then you are probably in the complex facing the city that was being built when we were there
enjoy, but be aware that Malta "is a small island" as they kept telling us.

Bluelady · 13/01/2018 18:59

Malta is LOVELY, loads to do and much of it's seriously beautiful. Mdina is stunning with a 180 degree view of half the island.

BarbaraofSevillle · 13/01/2018 18:59

I thought Sliema was nice when I stayed there too, although it was a good few years ago, but the snobs on here have described it as a dump.

Mintylizzy9 · 13/01/2018 18:59

Haha screw I aged ten years the first drive up there! We had a van type car with a sliding door so it was fairly wide. I soon got into the local way of just flooring it the second we reached the final incline 💃🏻

Wish I was there now, like you say fab pool and so bloody peaceful we have some lovely evenings, once DS was in bed sat out bbqing —and downing the 5 euro a bottle prosecco—

BarbaraofSevillle · 13/01/2018 19:00

I also really like Malta and Gozo in general, lots to see and do, but part of the attraction for me is great diving, so could probably spend weeks there.

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2018 19:02

TBH North coast of Tenerife was lovely : would happily go back.

Mallorca : yup there were grim kiss me quick bits, and others that were just wonderful

Crete - back like a shot

Kas : no thank you, ever

TheHandmaidsTail · 13/01/2018 19:22

Torreveija by Alicante is nice

LakieLady · 13/01/2018 19:24

Jumped to the wrong conclusion on reading the thread title here. I was about to suggest a week in a caravan on the Isle of Sheppey.
