Ok, I was probably over exaggerating (a little)

We need to take FIL away on hols. It needs to be sunny, short haul and somewhere very "Brits abroad" but not horrific as we have a 1 year old.

I thought costa brava might have nailed it but looking into it is that the nice costa? Do I need costa Blanca instead?

In Malta's defence I was there for 4 days only and in what is apparently the worst bit. There may be very lovely parts we didn't get to see

MsHarry · 13/01/2018 16:41

Valencia is in Spain not Malta. Do you mean Valletta?

MsHarry · 13/01/2018 16:42

Malta is very nice according to DM and MIL who are not fond of shitty.

catgirl1976 · 13/01/2018 16:44

That's the on Valletta - sorry

That bit was nice. The place where we were was like a building site full of bars doing full english breakfasts, no beaches and concrete as far as the eye could see

Bluelady · 13/01/2018 16:44

There are very lovely parts of Malta (most of it), unfortunately the grim bits are where the cheapest hotels are - Qwara and Bugibba.

Bugibba - that's where we stayed (not our choice). Avoid that bit anyone going to Malta

rosettesforjill · 13/01/2018 16:51

How important are sandy beaches? NE Corfu might work if you don't mind pebbles. Kassiopi and Kalami have a few Brits abroad type bars and restaurants (and the whole coast is full of British people!) but it's beautiful and plenty of more traditional/family friendly options.

Branleuse · 13/01/2018 16:51

Well Malta is a very densely populated place. The most densley populated in europe and it IS built up. There is a lot of wonderful history though, and its a fabulous climate, and the people are generally absolutely lovely, helpful and friendly. There is great public transport, so if you want to stay in the resort areas then thats your own call.

Likewise tenerife. Go to the south, its built up and very british, but the north is very spanish and incredibly beautiful

MiddleClassProblem · 13/01/2018 16:52

Another vote for the Algave. Plus it’s the same time zone so it’s one less thing for him to moan about Grin

NotAgainYoda · 13/01/2018 16:53

Jersey? Dh has to go there for work. Shit but people seem to like it

Branleuse · 13/01/2018 16:53

im staying in Bugibba in a few weeks, so cheers for that. I do know the island a bit though, and have been to this area before, and while its not the best bit of malta, its asolutely bargainous for accomodation as a base and im looking forward to it

Sleepyblueocean · 13/01/2018 16:56

Nerja is accessible, has plenty for those who don't want anything too 'different' but is a nice place so not a shithole but a possible compromise. It's not the right place if a party town is wanted.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 13/01/2018 17:01

yy to Nerja
It's perfectly pleasant - no rowdiness, on-street vomit or tits-oot bars that I noticed - but I will admit to finding it a bit too Brits Abroad for my taste. You can find places seeing English food, and even the "Spanish" places seem to do very limited, anglicised patatas bravas and paella type menus. Everyone speaks English.

One plus is that if you have a hire car you can escape out into the Hills pretty easily Frigliana is a really short drive, and Granada's well under an hour, so Proper Spain is accessible.

herecomesthsun · 13/01/2018 17:04

We are Eurocamping near Barcelona over Easter. We will have options of beaches for the kids, culture for when we feel like it, interesting historical bits should we wish and we might avail ourselves of the occasional cooked breakfast alongside local cuisine.

We seriously thought of going to Malta, for various reasons, but I decided to stay a bit closer to home this time. Our 5 year old really loved Eurocamp in France last year because of all the facilities laid on for the kids and I wanted a very child friendly holiday.

Also we could get a very reasonable accommodation deal, and flights making it a very easy door to door journey. We will be able to set off mid-morning and should be at our planned accommodation (first leg) around tea time.

Branleuse · 13/01/2018 17:06

I love eurocamp. Weve done loads and ive loved every one, as have the children

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 13/01/2018 17:11

Having looked at Nerja, it looks quite lovely! Quite fancying it as a cheap pre-baby honeymoon actually!

rookiemere · 13/01/2018 17:16

Nerja is lovely. We went pre DS, would be a great family holiday destination.

crumpet · 13/01/2018 17:17

San Antonio. Grim. But most of the rest of Ibiza is wonderful

brizzledrizzle · 13/01/2018 17:22

Weston Super Mare.
No problems with flights! Grin

Or Severn Beach - not far to travel.

catgirl1976 · 13/01/2018 17:24

Sorry Bran - maybe they will have improved it. And if it's only a base for visiting the nice bits then I'm sure it will be lovely

Navegante · 13/01/2018 17:26

Another vote for Salou. Flight is 2 hours from London. Six million restaurants to eat at. Beaches are nice, lots of playgrounds.

herecomesthsun · 13/01/2018 17:30

I think Jersey could be good, nice and close for flights (or ferry) but weatherwise you are looking at a small improvement say on London temperatures of 1 or 2 degrees. It is not very foreign but that might suit you.

riceuten · 13/01/2018 17:30

Malaga has a real mixture of Brits abroad and authentic Spanish stuff. Nice beaches too.

I second the Algarve - Albufeira, for one. About 2 streets away from the main square and the "All Day Engerlish Breakfasts" were beautiful cobblestone streets and an old lady all dressed in black sat on her front doorstep peeling potatoes.
