I keep hearing people saying red sauce, it's only recently I've ever heard this....jad ketchup suddenly become a dirty word?!

Grumpbum, it’s ‘dippy sauce’ in our house for the same reason.

Red or white dippy sauce come to think of it (ketchup or mayo). Sorry OP! I am trying to get them out of it, promise!

MrsOprah · 12/01/2018 21:40

Wow, if anything I'm amazed my ears weren't offend soooner. So many "red sauce" folks around. Eek!

Where do people say red sauce?! I was brought up on the tautological 'tomato ketchup', but also heard 'tomato sauce' and 'ketchup'. Always 'brown sauce' though (I agree: HP or Daddies)

LadyBunnysWig · 12/01/2018 21:40

My mum says red sauce. I say tomato sauce

PurpleDaisies · 12/01/2018 21:41

It isn’t a tautology-you can get other sorts of ketchup, eg mushroom (I watch masterchef!)

MrsOprah · 12/01/2018 21:42

@CherryChasingDotMuncher
I know right!

It's ketchup!
Tomato sauce is the one you eat with pasta.

PolarBearGoingSomewhere · 12/01/2018 21:42

Red sauce here since my childhood (East Midlands)

DH says ketchup despite growing up with a mile of each other. However he also keeps it in the cupboard not the fridge. Is he odd or am I nouveau riche? I lived exclusively in cul de sacs until 2 years ago.

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2018 21:42

No, that's pasta sauce or tomato puree.

Dahlietta · 12/01/2018 21:43

Purpledaisies that's true actually, isn't it? I shall continue saying 'tomato ketchup' safe in the knowledge that I am not in fact committing a tautological crime Wink

Mamimawr · 12/01/2018 21:43

In Welsh we call it "Sôs coch" so a translation would be red sauce. Some Welsh speakers say red sauce instead of ketchup.

MrsOprah · 12/01/2018 21:44

@MelvinThePenguin
White dippy sauce!! For mayonnaise.....I'm wounded, please, I'm losing the will.

Mushroom ketchup!! @purpledaisies what?!

ScreamingValenta · 12/01/2018 21:46

'Tomato sauce' for me, though I don't object to 'red sauce' - it would be a tad illogical because I happily say 'brown sauce'.

JustGettingStarted · 12/01/2018 21:46

Not all ketchup is tomato ketchup, although other varieties have pretty much disappeared.

PurpleDaisies · 12/01/2018 21:46

You’re definitely safe dahlietta. Grin

In the welsh valleys, it’s usually red sauce.

StripySocksAndDocs · 12/01/2018 21:47

How do you feel about 'tommy k'?

Littlebelina · 12/01/2018 21:47

Red sauce or brown sauce was the option in a distinctly unposh region of the north west for my chips from a greasy spoon 20years ago.

ApplesTheHare · 12/01/2018 21:47

In West Yorkshire it's ONLY red sauce. I was very confused when I first got here Grin

DecoysBitch · 12/01/2018 21:47

You'd hate my house. When DS first started to talk he called it "dippy", and dippy it has stayed.

PurpleDaisies · 12/01/2018 21:47

Mushroom ketchup!! @purpledaisies what?!

I’ve never had it but you see it in hipster restaurants and posh food shops. It looks disgusting.

MrsOprah · 12/01/2018 21:49

Oh hang on....good point, tomato sauce is for pasta.

Seems it's ketchup / tomato ketchup only then.

However, let's argree tomato sauce isn't a substitute for saying tomato puree.

Surely, if you send out a shopping list saying tomato sauce, it's often coming back with puree for your chunky chips? The horror!

TheQueenOfWands · 12/01/2018 21:50

They have mushroom ketchup in Tesco.

Sometimes we go and look at as though it's an exhibit in a freak show.

Ditti chopped up octopus in jars.

whojamaflip · 12/01/2018 21:50

Mushroom ketchups lovely in stews and casseroles! I also make gooseberry ketchup every year which is divine with cold meats.

Anyway back to the op - afraid it's known as tommy k in our house.

PurpleDaisies · 12/01/2018 21:51

Tomato purée is a cooking ingredient, not a sauce. I could understand someone coming back with a jar of dolmio type stuff though.
