"Red sauce".....you mean ketchup!!

I keep hearing people saying red sauce, it's only recently I've ever heard this....jad ketchup suddenly become a dirty word?!

I've never heard of it being called red sauce in the US or UK. Tomato sauce occasionally but usually simply ketchup.

Although if I did hear that I'd probably laugh. Every since my husband and I saw a cereal at Aldi called 'Red Fruit Cereal' we're in the habit of jokingly referring to some things by colour rather than correct name. I mean seriously Aldi, red fruit Cereal, that puts tomatoes in the running...but I digress.

When people say "batch" here to mean a bread roll or bun or what have you I kinda want to backhand them. 😃 So I can see how red sauce would grate on the nerves.

I had the opposite problem when living in England. Went in to chippy and asked for 'a chip' which anyone from NI knows means a portion of chips. Cue lots of baffled looks and being asked, 'you want a chip! One single chip!'

I say "Red Sauce" at the McDonalds Drive Through, DD is and judgey.

But those "Can I take your order" microphones never pick up my accent, I've ordered Spicy Veggie Burger and got Fillet-o-Fish ( yes cos they sound so bloody similar )

I’m interested in finding out whether people who say “red sauce” also call squash “diluting juice”, or if they are different groups.

Another possible correlation is that people who say "red sauce" also play the undocumented Monopoly variation of putting all monies paid to the Bank in the middle of the board and giving it to the next person to land on Free Parking.

Red sauce is stupid - if ketchup is red sauce then presumably mayo is white sauce and mustard yellow sauce...

In Scotland sauce is rid or broon. It’s pronounced soss. In east Scotland (ONLY the east) you will be asked if you want “Salt n soss” with your fish and chips. This will give you salt and a version of Daddy’s sauce watered down with vinegar. DO NOT expect red soss ever. DO NOT request “salt n soss” in west Scotland -you will be asked to leave! The menu is a minefield in your standard Scottish chipper!

I say red sauce but not diluting juice. I think diluting juice is very regional, isn't it?

I've never heard 'diluting juice' - which region is that from? I much prefer it to 'squash', btw!

In the US red sauce refers to Mariana sauce served over pasta. Ketchup is called ketchup.

I get red sauce, though I never use it myself, but tomato sauce, to me, is a tomato based sauce that is served on pasta.

I put ketchup and mayo on my fries, not red sauce and white sauce. And both get stored in the fridge after they are opened; it says do on the bottles.

I've lived and worked in many parts of the UK and I think I was brought up to call it tomato sauce but interchangeably with tomato ketchup. My kids always call it ketchup. To them tomato sauce is the 'mariana' (as it shall henceforth be known) I make for pasta.
I would understand red sauce in context - if I was ordering chips - but I'd assume it meant fake ketchup. I didn't know it was a synonym.

I'm curious to know whereabouts in Scotland a chippy was offering "red sauce", as a PP mentioned. It's only ever "saltnsoss" in the East, or "saltnvinegar" in the West. I don't think I've ever actually seen a chippy with a ketchup/red sauce option.

We called it tomato sauce when I was wee, and I loved it, but I call it ketchup now, and can't stand the muck. Nowadays, tomato sauce to me is passata.

I'd like to put in a word for HP Fruity Sauce; that's my go-to sauce for everything these days.
