Ketchup for me thanks to American parents.
I had some Malay friends at college and we would cook together. They thought calling tomato sauce ketchup was hilarious because to them katsap just means any sauce at all, usually chili.

Sunflowers79 · 13/01/2018 11:55

Red dippy in our house (named by the kids!)

PoirotDidIt · 13/01/2018 12:28

"Yellow sauce" should be mustard, not salad cream, surely?

I always thought "red sauce" was the posh version, which seemed odd as to me it sounded a bit dim - like asking for "some of the green things" if you meant peas...

The worst horror of all though (as a Brit*) was going on holiday to somewhere where American English was widely spoken as a second language. Had to say tomAYto sauce to be understood. Shock Grin

It’s called “tommy k” here!

MrsOprah · 13/01/2018 13:22

DD to DS when she was aged 2 "pass me the Tombanato sauce". DS aged 8 patiently said "you mean tomato sauce". To which she replied " that's what I said TOM BAN AT O" in a very long drawn out dramatic way. We still call it TOMBANATO sauce.

limitedperiodonly · 13/01/2018 18:22

It is @MrsOprah

MrsKoala · 13/01/2018 18:40

Well Salsa Verde is quite posh and that's green sauce. How about Salsa Rosso? Very Hyacinth Bucket.

lasttimeround · 13/01/2018 18:53

Actually educated people pronounce it catsup

joystir59 · 13/01/2018 19:02

Tomato sauce

DoubleLottchen · 13/01/2018 19:35

I called it tomato sauce growing up, now I would probably say ketchup.

I also said brown sauce as a child, and now I usually say HP. My grandmother called that "daddy's sauce", but still usually bought HP brand.

My DD is a fan of Rot-Weiss (ie red-white) sauce from Germany (those of a sensitive disposition may wish to look away now). It is ketchup and mayo, in a squeezy tube like a toothpaste tube, and it comes out in red and white stripes, like toothpaste Shock.

MrsKoala · 13/01/2018 20:24

Double - When DS1 was 3 he only ate things covered in mayo and ketchup. He had to have a blob of each on each side of his plate and he would swirl his chips round and round. It started like a yin yang symbol and soon became a big pink mess. Like having marie rose sauce on everything.

babygoatsmummy · 13/01/2018 20:51

My ds always calls Mayo 'egg sauce' Confused

Bumsnetnetbums · 13/01/2018 21:38

Double Envy urgh

meditrina · 14/01/2018 17:12

I've just been doing an Ocado order, and noticed that they sell banana ketchup

(No I'm not going to take one for the team and try it)

RoseAndRose · 14/01/2018 17:14

That sounds brilliant. After all, it's just prawn cocktail's sauce marie-rose, but unmixed.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 14/01/2018 17:15

That sounds so foul I almost can't resist buying some to see what the hell it tastes like!

Allthewaves · 14/01/2018 17:16

Tom sauce here too - you should do a poll Grin

BigBaboonBum · 14/01/2018 17:17

From the NW and everybody (I know) here says either red sauce or tomato sauce. I don’t think I’ve ever heard somebody say ketchup other than when we go to McDonald’s

ConcreteUnderpants · 14/01/2018 17:31

^^ same here, but in the West Mids

MrsKoala · 14/01/2018 17:59

Not sure how you make your marie rose sauce Rose. But that isn't how i make mine! Blurch.

BikeRunSki · 14/01/2018 18:27

Yep, I’ve only every known Marie Rose sauce to be a mix of tomato ketchup and mayonnaise, and seasoning. As explained here. It was the height of sophistication in my grandparents’ horse!

MrsKoala · 14/01/2018 18:39

Yes it's the 'seasonings' that are part of the recipe. Worcester sauce, lemon juice, tabasco, paprika, a dash of cream etc. It's not just Ketchup and mayo.

Unicorn81 · 14/01/2018 18:43

Brown sauce = chippy sauce
Not to be confused with HP which we just call HP, for use on steak pie, fry up type food and yorkshire puddings
