AIBU? According to Nigel Farage, I am. Nick Clegg, I'm not. Please can we just have another vote to see?

Piffle, we haven't left yet! Why not check that the public still want to leave before we go through with it?

PissedOffNeighbour · 11/01/2018 23:56

Nigel Farage himself said that if Remain won 52-48 then it was unfinished business.

scatterolight · 12/01/2018 00:00

Democracy works by the results of a vote being implemented. Then, after a period of time, usually 4-5 years, the people can vote again.

If a vote is taken, and the powers that be then faff about avoiding implementing the result, before asking people to vote again, you do not have democracy, you have tyranny. We may as well be in a tinpot dictatorship.

A second Referendum would be very bad news indeed and would spell the end of the Democratic system as we know it.

PissedOffNeighbour · 12/01/2018 00:02

Not necessarily scatterolight. Weak governments can fall before implementing most of their manifesto - is that not democracy then?

Weezol · 12/01/2018 00:03

Who do you suggest pays for it? The last one cost at least £142 million just to administer.

PissedOffNeighbour · 12/01/2018 00:03

Also the referendum was of course advisory only...

RoseAndRose · 12/01/2018 00:04

"Why not check that the public still want to leave before we go through with it?"

Because we've just had a vote where most people decided they wanted to leave.

Campaigning for the kind of 'leave' terms you think give the best future is one thing. Attempting to reverse a referendum is concerning. You just can't have democracy only when the vote goes your way.

Butterymuffin · 12/01/2018 00:04

The democratic system as we know it's already over. It ended when politicians backtracked on their promises the same day that their side won, when they were shown to have been based on either lies or no information whatsoever. That's not real democracy and it's not worth defending. Take a vote based on proper information and a possible deal.

sausagerollsrock · 12/01/2018 00:04

Give over 🙄 it’s like a broken record.

meditrina · 12/01/2018 00:05

"Also the referendum was of course advisory only..."

??

A referendum is a single question put to the people for determination.

It's not an opinion poll (however much disappointed Remainers have attempted to rebrand it)

PissedOffNeighbour · 12/01/2018 00:10

The result was non-binding - so yes ultimately it was just an opinion poll.

passthecremeeggs · 12/01/2018 00:10

The referendum was only advisory. It was not legally binding

MissionItsPossible · 12/01/2018 00:10

Some people on here lol... do you want some milkshakes to accompany your desperate clutch at straws!?

Julie8008 · 12/01/2018 00:12

OMG we are not some banana republic or tin pot dictatorship that keeps getting people to vote until they vote the right way.

Lets get on with our democratic election and leave the EU. If a minority want something different they can try and elect the Liberal Democrats to government and get them to make the UK rejoin the EU.

RancidOldHag · 12/01/2018 00:13

"Take a vote based on proper information and a possible deal"

Both sides had the chance to put information out.

Possible deal was never going to be discussed, because the then Government would not commission any preparatory work. Plenty of other experts put their views into the public domain at the time though.

And people assessed those views. And based on everything that was out there, more people decided that they want UK to leave. This doesn't mean they were mislead, or have faulty understanding. It means they chose 'leave' despite uncertainties.

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 12/01/2018 00:25

Because we've just had a vote where most people decided they wanted to leave.

I feel it was only technically 'most'. It was 51.9:48.1, with a 72.2% turnout.

I think that we need something a tad more decisive before we do something as major and irreversible as leave the EU. That might be good enough for a general election, where we get another go every five years, but not for this.

But I DO want another referendum
OliviaStabler · 12/01/2018 00:28

For crying out loud move on!

RosiePosiePuddle · 12/01/2018 01:15

One of the worse things about the referendum is this constant going on about democracy. Democracy is not winner takes it all. The side that gets the most votes shouting "shut up and get over it" is not the way that democracy should be implemented. Democracy is complicated and should take into account the needs and views of those in a minority too.

The way the referendum was conducted was terrible and many aspects of it would not have been allowed in other countries. The fact that it was stated as advisory meant that no threshold was set. The government then seized hold of the tiny majority and used it to implement the outcome, which would have not been allowed if it had of been legally binding. Add in the dreadful propaganda, lies, press impartiality and data mining used and a thoroughly undemocratic referendum resulted.

In countries that use referenda regularly. Issues are voted on more than once and follow up referenda are used to resolve new issues that occur.

Now that people have seen how the leave negotiations are going, would it not be reasonable to have another referendum? No one knew the level of government's incompetence. As a remainer and extreme anti-tory, even I been surprised. I don't like the Tories policies but I didn't foresee the compete lack of preparation and arrogance. I would like another vote because Brexit will directly affect my life and my kids lives forever (married to someone from the EU).

NiceViper · 12/01/2018 01:19

Where was it stated as advisory?

I mean other than post-hoc by those who seek to overturn it.

My recollection is that it was stated plenty of times during the campaign that it was a defining and decisive vote.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 12/01/2018 01:38

I would like one, i mean theres Precedent, we thought we had our General election with MPs and PM sorted, but when May thought it would suite her agenda she felt it fair to call a snap election

MoggyP · 12/01/2018 01:46

Yes, and the House voted to permit it - in accordance with set procedure. Did any MPs of any party vote against it?

Do you think we should give them another vote on it?

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2018 01:47

Cameron could have chosen to specify in the referendum bill that the result would be binding,
as he did for the earlier referendum on the AV system,
but he didn't.

So, the referendum was legally only advisory,
but politically any party that just ignored the result would be taking a serious risk, at least atm.

Even Farage ended up admitting referendum was advisory:

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-eu-nigel-farage-forced-to-admit-the-eu-referendum-was-only-advisory-a7401151.html

“Ah. Well… I take the advisory point,”

BigChocFrenzy · 12/01/2018 01:57

The country is still split down the middle.
Until that changes significantly, another referendum would not help.

DryHeave · 12/01/2018 02:06

It’s utterly ludicrous that and advisory referendum with a borderline result is being used to make such a fundamental change to the entire fabric of our country. Such momentous changes in other, less significant areas, usually require 2/3 majority. I just can’t believe this was ever allowed to happen in the first place.

toomanycreambuns · 12/01/2018 09:06

So if you'd got the desired decision the first time around, would you have been happy for a second vote? Seriously?

The remain voters seem to think they are superior and everyone else is intellectually stunted. However, they are digging their own hole here.
