Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

We grate cheese but in the food processor as it's super quick, and can quickly feed my family of 5!

fatimashortbread · 11/01/2018 20:11

No you are not alone; I also grated all the sad bits of Christmas cheese and froze them to us later!

You are better to buy frozen mixed veg than chopped fresh as a lot of the nutrients are lost.

cryingbehindsunglasses · 11/01/2018 20:17

I live in France and they love the pre grated stuff here.
Masses of emmental râpé in the supermarket fridges.
I buy it, it's ok but does go off quickly than normal cheese.

herecomesthsun · 11/01/2018 20:19

I rarely buy pre-grated cheese - on holiday in France I do, especially if there is no grater in the gite/ chalet.

I have bought pre-grated if on a very good offer in the UK a couple of times.

bonbonours · 11/01/2018 20:20

My mum buys grated cheese and my cheese-loving kids hate it. They now know you say 'no' to cheese at grandma's house! Even if they liked it I wouldn't buy it because it's too expensive.

MrsHathaway · 11/01/2018 20:21

Same for veg. I can’t imagine the vitamins survive as well, so much exposure to air.

Fresh definitely doesn't - goes fizzy very quickly even if sealed. But irrelevant when frozen.

weepingangel12 · 11/01/2018 20:23

Yes, air makes the vitamins run away and hide.

missymillsysmum · 11/01/2018 20:24

I prefer a strong blue cheese grated on my pasta dishes and I've never seen that sold pre-grated so I guess I'm going to stay a grater :)

Octopus37 · 11/01/2018 20:25

There is of course the option to just cut off small bits of cheese an try to pass them off as shavings if you cant be arsed to grate.

Agree about frozen mixed veg, especially the steam bag ones when they are on offer

SauvignonBlanche · 11/01/2018 20:41

I fucking panicked earlier, I couldn't find my cheese grater, thought an MNer had confiscated it. Grin
Found it and remembered I have another as back-up.

Bought the Waitrose Sofriito today, that a PP mentioned, it's ace.

ArDali1 · 11/01/2018 21:36

Veg chopper and cheese grater all the way.
Whilst I think ready chopped veg can be a time saver, the quality is awful and the price is ridiculous.
Pre grated cheese is vile, I honestly don't know how people buy that stuff.

Sarahjo04 · 11/01/2018 21:44

Im a cheese grater. I bought grated once but felt what was acheived in convenience was lacking in quality as the cheese was like rubber!

nannykatherine · 11/01/2018 21:46

i grate and chop because it's more expensive otherwise

DuruttiColumnist · 11/01/2018 22:01

My DBro used to work in a cheese factory.

You don't want to know where the pre-grated stuff comes from Envy

lljkk · 11/01/2018 22:14

The grated cheese we buy is the same price per kg as the blocks we buy.

caringcarer · 11/01/2018 22:43

I still grate. I also let kids grate as something they can do in kitchen to help and not really get wrong. I use a grate that collects it into a box so no mess either.

caringcarer · 11/01/2018 22:43

I also sometimes grate chocolate on to dessert too if feeling decadent.

Bouledeneige · 11/01/2018 22:47

Unbelievable - money looking for a home. I never buy any prepared veg or grated cheese. The grated parmesan in a pot is disgusting.

I was shocked at Christmas people buying pre-prepared roasties, veg, yorkshire pudding etc when they are so easy to do yourself.

Wishithoughtbeforeispeak · 11/01/2018 23:01

I do both I grate cheese if we have a block of it but have been known to by pregrated especially over Christmas for ease of use and when on holiday and you can’t be sure there will be a grater in the accommodation! We have to buy lactose free cheese due to my boys intolerances it’s expensive so grating makes it go further, but at the same time a bag of grated is only 20p more than a block for the same weight !

eastlondoner · 11/01/2018 23:04

I do. Pre grated cheese is rank.

Fagzilla · 11/01/2018 23:05

Pre grated cheese is absolutely foul. My son brought some home once, it felt dry and horrible so went straight in the bin. My DP and are are graters, and I certainly wouldn’t buy pre-prepared veg!

weepingangel12 · 11/01/2018 23:07

I by grated mozzarella for pizzas for 79p for a bag big enough to do three large pizzas, why are people complaining about it being expensive? Its super cheap.

KiaOraAura · 11/01/2018 23:17

Our dog has cheese on her food and even she doesn't get horrible pre-grated cheese. I just buy a big block, grate it in the food processor then freeze box fulls. Helps keep the freezer full so cheaper to run, and I dont have to pay the daft price to buy shit pre-grated cheese.

Candlefairy101 · 11/01/2018 23:50

I bought a frozen bag of pre-cut stew veg the other day to go in my chicken stew, best thing I every bought!

In the morning I through the bag in with some chicken thighs put on a low setting and was complete by tea time Grin

Skowvegas · 11/01/2018 23:58

I added pre-shredded parmesan to our omelets earlier and pictured hundreds of MNers doing catsbum mouths.
