Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

I own several types of cheese grater and a cheese slicer.

bemusedmoose · 11/01/2018 18:04

I was grating just yesterday to make cheese sauce for macaroni cheese.

No pre grated or chopped rubbish here - it all tastes horrible. Also pre chopped has lost a lot nutrients.

BusterGonad · 11/01/2018 18:06

I grate cheese as I don't like the coating or thickness of pregrated cheese! I do buy carrot batons though as my son loves them and I find cutting carrots into batons quite dangerous, due to the fact I'm crap with knives!

bluepumpkin · 11/01/2018 18:06

I have literally just grated cheese then checked my emails as I stand there perusing my freshly grated pile of cheese. Never bought pre grated!

Fundays12 · 11/01/2018 18:09

I think grated cheese is disgusting and cheap tasting I never buy it for that reason but I don’t eat much cheese.

Gingercat86 · 11/01/2018 18:13

The only cheese I buy grated is Parmesan because it bores me to tears with how long it takes if I have to put it in a recipe.

TheVanguardSix · 11/01/2018 18:15

I've only ever buy grated cheese when I'm making pizza for a birthday party- in other words, cooking in bulk for many, which is seldom. I find the taste really peculiar.

I'm a grater. Grating is great.

DearShirt · 11/01/2018 18:16

How does chopped veg lose nutrients?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/01/2018 18:18

Tried ready-grated cheese once.

It's filth!

Always grate my own.

jarhead123 · 11/01/2018 18:21

We grate our own and chop our own veg!

Sidelook · 11/01/2018 18:21

I only ever buy grated cheese, it’s the way forward in our house.

bluesu · 11/01/2018 18:24

I buy pre grated president emmental for ease of cheese toast is making. And DH likes it on his pasta (the heathen, hath he never heard of parmigiano reggiano!!?)

But I agree. Pre grated cheddar and the like tastes of nothin! Not even cheese!!

LaurieF · 11/01/2018 18:26

The only cheese I ever buy pre grated is mozarella and thats just cos those stupid slimy little balls are a bugger yo grate 😂😂😂

marymoosmum · 11/01/2018 18:27

I still grate my cheese. I do sometimes buy the ready sliced cheese but not the grated cheese.

Crinkle77 · 11/01/2018 18:33

I still grate. Ready grated stuff is horrible and plasticy.

Girlsworld92 · 11/01/2018 18:35

I grate cheese but my kids do like the pre grated so I buy that occasionally. I'm a massive fan of prechopped onions. They have literally changed my life 😂

dazzledandconfused · 11/01/2018 18:36

I grate my own cheese and chop my own veg. However, I did once watch a telly programme where they showed some of the “ugly veg” that wouldn’t make it into a supermarket was getting chopped and sold as pre-prepped instead of being wasted. I thought that was most sensible and it changed my view of the pre-chopped stuff a bit..

keffie12 · 11/01/2018 18:36

I grate and chop. I don't buy ready prepped

Glittertwins · 11/01/2018 18:40

The only time we buy prepped veg is if they are in offer and we're cooking for more people or in stir fry packs. Hand chopped/hand grated otherwise!

mummaCL · 11/01/2018 18:44

I use a rotary grater, takes no time at all. Also grate and freeze for future use, lasts for ages.

cherrybath · 11/01/2018 18:49

I don't like pre-grated cheese either, its a bit starchy and somehow tastes like fat than real cheese. Also my DH is meant to avoid saturated fat so I buy low fat mature cheddar and grate it finely for cooking

dingdongdigeridoo · 11/01/2018 18:54

Rotary graters are a lifesaver if you struggle with normal graters. Chop your cheese into small chunks, and turn the handle, and you get a big pile of grated cheese in seconds. And no missing fingernails.

I can't imagine buying stuff like pre chopped onion. Her shopping must be expensive.

brownelephant · 11/01/2018 18:59

mumma can you recommend yours?
we have a cheap and shit one, would want one that dc can use

Welshmaenad · 11/01/2018 19:01

Frozen chopped onions are a quid for a big bag. It's not expensive, and far less wasteful than half onions stinking out the fridge as they shrivel.

Raisedbyguineapigs · 11/01/2018 19:02

girlsworld I came on to say exactly the same thing about prechopped frozen onions! They've changed my life too ! I do chop most other veg myself though! And grate my own cheese. the pregrated is covered in flour and goes off far too quickly.
