Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

I grate and chop here too. Tried some ore grated mozzarella on nachos and was rather disappointed, so never again

squoosh · 11/01/2018 16:41

Is the Grate and Chop a saucier version of the Bend and Snap?

Nimmykins · 11/01/2018 17:26

I grate when needed. Grated cheese dries up.

Someonessnackbitch · 11/01/2018 17:27

Grated cheese tastes vile

ClaryFray · 11/01/2018 17:29

I bought some today actually, but, it's for pizza topping for DS when he makes his own this weekend. Normally I grate my own !

dailyshite · 11/01/2018 17:31

Am I the only one that quite likes grated cheese? Blush

I also use frozen sweet potato and butternut squash, because it's useful to have in and butternut squash is horrible to cut up. I also use frozen avocado because its cheaper and fresh stuff goes off too quick.

Does that make me a lazy cow?

therealmrsclooney · 11/01/2018 17:32

I grate a big bit in the food processor (using a fine grater setting) then stick it in a ziplock bag in the freezer. It doesn't all freeze into a big lump, so you can easily shake out what's needed. Saves time, saves money, and saves picking!

Mmmmmmmchips · 11/01/2018 17:41

I grate cheese and chop veg.

Pre chopped is vile and frozen carrots are the worst.

Only time I have bought pre grated was when I thought I was going to be clever and make homemade pizzas for guests Confused

manicmij · 11/01/2018 17:41

Only bought pregrated cheese once and didn t like the potato flour additive. Kids love grating cheese usually eating quite a bit in the process. Only packed veg I buy is spinach. Don't like these prechopped veg always seem as if they have dried out and would add apart from peas no frozen veg, full of water and taste horrible.

problembottom · 11/01/2018 17:42

I hate grated parmesan, I buy a nice block of it and dear god, grated cheddar is a nightmare to put in a sandwich and to eat. No thanks!

Minidollop · 11/01/2018 17:45

We buy dairy free cheese and the grated versions aren't any worse than the normal ones.
I also but some pre chopped veg...frozen onion, chopped butter nut squash, frozen roasties etc because I have a wrist injury that makes peeling and chopping difficult.
They have their place I guess.

ForgotwhatIcameinherefor · 11/01/2018 17:46

Can’t be bothered to read the whole thread because I’d like to retain my will to live.
Why would you ask “Am I the only one?” Just because one person told you she doesn’t grate her own cheese fgs?

ilovechocolate07 · 11/01/2018 17:46

I do! I also chop my own veg but I do cheat and buy pre made mash!

limecordial · 11/01/2018 17:48

pre grated cheese is wing. Pre chopped veg is crap

^^this with the exception of butternut squash which is a pita to cut up

limecordial · 11/01/2018 17:48

Wrong... not wing. Clearly

Turquoise123 · 11/01/2018 17:49

Chopped veggies loose significant amount of vitamins

Tweety2067 · 11/01/2018 17:49

Don't hate! Grate!

EllenMP · 11/01/2018 17:49

Very odd posts here. The grated cheese I buy tastes exactly the same as it would in a block. I buy both, because I love cheese and there are only a few kinds you can get grated. Plus two kinds I like, Monterey Jack and part-skim Mozzarella, are really only available in grated form. The former is what you want for Mexican food or mac and cheese and the latter for pizza.

MomInterrupted · 11/01/2018 17:50

I grate the whole block into a tupperware. Saves time and we usually get hrough it within a week, but even if not - never had it go off yet

Blackteadrinker77 · 11/01/2018 17:52

I never buy pre grated or chopped.

The cheese dries out and has rice flour to stop it sticking together and veg starts to lose it's nutrient content once chopped so I like to do it fresh.

Well I get my food processor to do it. I eat around a kilo of fresh fruit and veg each day so the food processor is quicker.

RubyDuchess · 11/01/2018 17:55

Yeah because i love paying for someone else to grate my cheese/chop my veg!
I understand the convenience of it but for goodness sake it only takes a few minutes to do it yourself Confused

MarvellousMonsters · 11/01/2018 17:56

I’ll buy some veg pre-prepped (like cauliflower rice or carrot sticks) but I still grate cheese. If you’re able bodied it’s not actually difficult or time consuming.

Pgs007 · 11/01/2018 17:58

The only food I buy pre made is diced onion.. grating cheese at home is so much better

MrsKoala · 11/01/2018 17:58

I grate cheese, chop veg, crush garlic, peel potatoes, make gravy from scratch (no fucking granules) .. and none of it is difficult nor time consuming.

Actually it is all time consuming. Even taking 3 minutes is consuming time i don't have some days. Also most of these things require 2 hands. I can make a pasta sauce while holding a baby and having a crying 3 year old hanging on my leg by using frozen chopped onion, a tsp ready minced garlic, dried oregano, tomato puree, tinned toms and some shop made meatballs and frozen roasted veg.

Gobbolino - The day i realised you can freeze cheese was brilliant. I am about to buy my 3rd freezer. I make loads of freezer meals. freezer smoked haddock kedgeree with a packet of ready cooked rice, frozen onions and peas, boiled eggs and spices. Freezer fish pie chopped frozen salmon, cod, smoked haddock, frozen white sauce (i batch cook in advance), frozen chopped spinach topped with mash (sometimes frozen too) and frozen cheese. Freezer chicken pie - frozen cooked chicken and gammon mixed with frozen white sauce, frozen veg topped with frozen puff pastry. Freezer macaroni cheese - fresh pasta frozen, mixed with frozen white sauce, frozen cheese, frozen broccoli and cauli, frozen gammon/ham, splash of cream or water, topped with sliced fresh tomato if i have some (i don't buy tomatoes off season) and more frozen cheese....the list of my freezer/cupboard one handed meals are endless and save us from takeaway bankruptcy and scurvy.

lachrynose · 11/01/2018 18:00

Anybody else starting to get to that stage where the word 'grate' sounds wrong? Grin

We grate and chop in this house. I'm guessing they use the crap cheese and the bendy carrots in pre-prepared packs.
