Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

I am a dedicated grater, although I have on a rare occasion bought it pre grated when away for a weekend with a large group of friend (20) and it was my turn to cater. Using the cheese pre grated was certainly helpful particular as you're unsure of the equipment in the rented accommodation . I never clocked it was covered in a flour but I suppose it must have some anti caking powder on it. Made ok cheese sauce though it is more expensive and certainly the quality of the cheese is probably at the bottom of the scale

There's always someone who says that xyz only takes a couple of minutes. Of course it does. But if you're dealing with six or seven of those ingredients (e.g. for a cheese-topped cottage pie) then that's suddenly twenty minutes when you could have just opened the freezer.

Not to mention the consideration that if your 3yo enjoys scaling furniture you don't dare spend three minutes preparing food, let alone half an hour.

Girlsworld92 · 11/01/2018 19:05

Raisedby I'm glad it's not just me.* I'm tempted to try prechopped peppers too.* Imagine!

brownelephant · 11/01/2018 19:08

cheese topped bakes: cheese slices will do

phoenix1973 · 11/01/2018 19:10

No it seems to be powdery/stiff/rubbery so i still buy, grate and freeze if I've got loads

Justkeepgoingandsmile · 11/01/2018 19:10

I grate my cheese and chop veg

MrsKoala · 11/01/2018 19:10

Frozen chopped veg is still cheaper than a takeaway. And Precooked rice etc. I used to have good intentions and then have no time and end up getting a takeaway. So I realised that it’s still better to cook using these shortcuts than not cook at all.

stardust18 · 11/01/2018 19:12

I grate and chop my veg maybe I’m old school. Ready done grated cheese is rank! 🤢

Touchmybum · 11/01/2018 19:22

I hate pre-prepared anything, it never tastes nice.

CraftyNestUK · 11/01/2018 19:25

I too use frozen chopped onions, garlic, ginger, parsley etc but I will also do my own.

I do, however, grate my own cheese as I think it’s more tasty and aromatic. Have the greatest cheese grater from pampered chef too. (I do freeze my parmesan, while, and grate from frozen).

Loki1983 · 11/01/2018 19:26

I don’t go in for pre-prepared anything but the cheese grater rarely gets used. I’m more for sliced cheese personally.

SingingSeuss · 11/01/2018 19:30

Another grater here ( unless I'm making pizza then I go over to the dark side).

kateandme · 11/01/2018 19:31

can you freeze block of cheese?

Bobbi73 · 11/01/2018 19:33

I buy it for camping as it's really easy to use but otherwise why would you buy it. It's weird, rubbery and very expensive

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 11/01/2018 19:38

grated cheese is drier and yuck.

12345OnceCaughtAFish · 11/01/2018 19:38

Grate and chop my own stuff. Have you seen the price of pre-prepared stuff? I've better things to spend my money on (like the machine that I use to do my grating and chopping for me Grin)

Clearaschristal · 11/01/2018 19:40

Bought grated cheese once, never again. Doesn't taste or act the same as cheese grated from the block.

3out · 11/01/2018 19:46

Grated cheese tastes all wrong, wrong texture too.

I like prechopped frozen veg, especially butternut squash. You get the odd piece with skin on it still, but not many.

I have double jointed wrists, thumbs, fingers. It makes chopping and grating really difficult work, and pretty painful, so if there’s an alternative then I’ll take it (unless it tastes awful, like grated cheese)

MrsHathaway · 11/01/2018 19:48

can you freeze block of cheese?

Oh yes!

Clandestino · 11/01/2018 19:49

Only buy the grated mozarella for pizza but that's when I'm in a hurry. I grate my own cheese and chop my own veggies. The ready-chopped and grated stuff is mostly vile and dry.

mumof3boys33 · 11/01/2018 19:49

I’ve never bought grated cheese or pre cut vegetables. Why pay all that extra? We’ve had grated cheese on our jacket potatoes tonight 😆

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 11/01/2018 19:55

I wouldn’t chose to use pre grated cheese even in a zombie apocalypse. I’m pretty much the same about pre chopped veg.

DivisionBelle · 11/01/2018 19:58

I buy grated cheese for camping, otherwise not.

The powder on it is horrid, it is cheap low grade cheese, and I think it is not good hygiene to have so much surface exposed in storage.

Same for veg. I can’t imagine the vitamins survive as well, so much exposure to air.

purplebunny2012 · 11/01/2018 20:03

She's crazy! I would never buy pre-grated when it's so damn easy to DIY
