Ikea ad campaign: piss on a magazine

QuizteamBleakley · 10/01/2018 18:37

Sorry, slightly clickbaity, but I wanted to share a recent Ikea campaign and see where the MN majority feel this falls. DH and I are polar opposites on this; one of us thinks "An ad that's going to increase sales" while the other thinks "horrible, crass and distasteful."
What sayeth you?

Whoever thinks it's horrible, crass and distasteful is overreacting somewhat. It's a picture of a crib, not a coffin.

LyraPotter · 10/01/2018 18:40

I think it's quite funny and sweet - as well as innovative. Can see why some would find it offputting though!

littlepeas · 10/01/2018 18:40

I'm struggling to believe that's real - are you sure it's not a hoax??

rcit · 10/01/2018 18:40

Bit weird but I wouldn’t say offensive.

eastwest1234 · 10/01/2018 18:41

Pee on the paper and if you're pregnant it gives you a discount code?

Can't get worked up about it

MaximaDeWit · 10/01/2018 18:42

It's clever.

It does say you can also sign up to Ikea Family to get the discount so the paper thing is really a publicity thing. It's an ad, so makes sense in that respect!

Jasminejot · 10/01/2018 18:46

I think it's gross.

ReanimatedSGB · 10/01/2018 18:51

I think it's quite clever. There's nothing particularly gross or distasteful about pregnancy, or the fact that peeing on sticks is a way to test for pregnancy (well, unless you find all bodily functions, particularly female ones, revolting.)

BlondeB83 · 10/01/2018 18:53

I think it’s hilarious!

Redrosebelle · 10/01/2018 18:55

All I'm saying is if I was pregnant I'd be doing it.

MakeMisogynyAHateCrime · 10/01/2018 18:56

Rather dismissive of people who adopt as well as being horribly distasteful.

WellThatsATurnipForTheBooks · 10/01/2018 18:57

It's clever, it's certainly different and not something any other company has done before and it's got people talking about IKEA so I would say it's a successful campaign.

(although I did have to double check that it's not April 1st)

Fwend · 10/01/2018 18:58

The poor store staff who are going to be handed soggy bits of pissy paper after this. Shock

Scribblegirl · 10/01/2018 18:59

I think it's quite fun. Bit of a gimmick but clever, can't find anything to get het up about it!

Scribblegirl · 10/01/2018 19:00

Also if you're newly pregnant and think pissing on a leaflet is 'hugely distasteful' you're in for a whole world of gross when you get to the birth. And child rearing for that Grin

hevonbu · 10/01/2018 19:01

I thought it was a hoax, but here is the ad in Swedish too. Special paper glued onto the ad, gives off a chemical reaction.

Pombliboo123 · 10/01/2018 19:03

I actually think that this is amazing.

JediStoleMyBike · 10/01/2018 19:05

Quite fancy giving it a whirl myself if I can get hold of the leaflet! Could do with some money off another crib!

babigailwabble · 10/01/2018 19:07

lol HOW did someone think of that!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 10/01/2018 19:08

Fwend -i agree with you, I wouldn’t want to be the member of staff that’s handed to Shock

kissbeforelippy · 10/01/2018 19:11

My thoughts exactly Fwend. Hope the staff are given gloves to wear Envy (not envy)!

VivaLeBeaver · 10/01/2018 19:12

Am I right in thinking you don’t actually need to hand in the piss soaked sheet? But that anyone who joins the ikea family card scheme will get the cot half price, pregnant or not? Save a few £ on a pregnancy test I guess.

Gammeldragz · 10/01/2018 19:13

I think it's clever and innovative.
Now I need to find a copy of this... And a pregnant person.

ParanoidGynodroid · 10/01/2018 19:15

Exactly Ghoul

Pregnancy is not gross, disgusting or distasteful, but pissed on magazine pages are, especially for poor IKEA staff.

fucketyboo · 10/01/2018 19:17

I wouldn’t want to be the member of staff that’s handed to
I'm assuming the idea is that you make a note of the code and tell the cashier, not that you hand them a piss soaked ad Hmm
