AIBU to be fuming at this CF and my lack of rights?! (Parking thread)

OK so I come home from taking the kids to school and when I arrive home someone is parked in my space. Not just anyone but the little black car that had 3 students in it I had seen driving in on my way out. Now normally student park in our residents only visitors bay which is annoying enough but this time they have parked in my privately owned and numbered parking space. So I cannot use it!

The council won’t do anything the police won’t do anything and even the college won’t do anything!

I honestly can’t believe the lack of rights people have on their own properties! This car is going to be in my space for at least 6 hours!

Why can’t there be some new system where people can call and report vehicles to be towed from their property at a smallish fee and then the owners of said cars have to pay the remaining fee to retrieve their cars?

You know some people have crippling anxiety issues, OP? Maybe he was late for a meeting, parked in the first empty spot he saw, then was absolutely doubled over with anxiety and had to get his friends to knock for him?

me pathetic, tell me to go on an assertiveness course, but it could have happened.

To see grown adults taking the piss out of youngsters and threatening to key their car is disgusting behaviour. This was all blown well out of proportion for the sake of attention on an anonymous thread.

Oh for goodness sake!

Nobody was going to actually do anything to the car.
OP actually SAW them come up the road, there was more than one person in the car.
The students have done this before at ops parking place. It wasnt an out of the blue emergency

Oh and it DOESNT matter if he was late for a meeting or not, it was a private parking space, big signs up, pretty big hints there, and he had NO right to park there for hours while he was somewhere else. He is responsible for leaving on time to get somewhere, its not ops job to babysit his car for him. Where was op supposed to park her car for hours?

If you do an ignorant selfish thing and think you are exempt from rules then you take whats coming to you and suck it up. YOU put yourself in that position nobody else to blame.

IceNoSlice · 10/01/2018 20:23

Alleypally do you have a link for the air bnb thread pls?

PositivelyPERF · 10/01/2018 20:40

I really think some posters need to hand in their mumsnet membership cards. They just aren't getting into the spirit of the parking threads. shakes head sadly

gobbin · 10/01/2018 21:05

A colleague of mine had similar issues in a uni area - her street would be littered with cars parked all over the place, double parked, up on pavements, across dropped kerbs etc.

Only took a handful of calls to the college principal, photos of offenders’ cars and threats of Police involvement (which was necessary and followed through with).

The small estate now has double yellow lines in all the right places and is relatively back to normal.

I'm just shocked experts classify me as a millennial even though I'll be 40 in three years!

Luckymummy22 · 10/01/2018 22:44

I always remember DH coming tentatively into the house from a night shift asking if I was alone.
Some CF had parked in our driveway!!
He blocked them but unfortunately I had to go to work so had to take the car 😭

Thankfully we trusted each other ...........😂

Car was actually someone visiting next door!!

ptumbi · 11/01/2018 10:15

IceNoSlice - AirBnB

A full thread, but an eye-opener to some posters' views!

hungryhippo90 · 11/01/2018 10:22

If there is a general problem in the area with parking you can instruct parking wardens to patrol the area,
We’ve recently had permits given out in our area- and if someone parks in our spaces we take a picture and send to the parking company and they are issued with a ticket.

We’re with cs2 management. There must be something that can be done in your area

hungryhippo90 · 11/01/2018 10:46

Oh and to the PP who says the pisstaking of youngsters and threats to their car is disgusting .....
FFS, old enough to drive and have a car, old enough to take the flack for inconsiderate parking.
FWIW the area I live in is opposite the hospital, hospital guests and staff alike park in our residential marked bays. Plenty of times myself and our neighbours have had our spaces taken, we’re often met with a shrug of the shoulders when told that it’s residents parking only.

Not really fair is it.., and no I wouldn’t be threatening but I am in a fortunate position to be able to report anyone who parks in my space in the knowledge they will receive a PCN

They don't. You are not a millennial.

I think people here are confusing two things: the cohort who were born late 70's early 80's who became adults around the millennial, and the cohort born in the years just before and after the millennial who are now young adults. It is the latter who are now commonly known as Milennials/Generation Snowflake.

Can you keep us updated with developments, please!

EllenMP · 11/01/2018 17:53

Send an email to your local councillor about it. If this happens regularly this is the sort of thing they can handle for you. If someone is trespassing on your property the police should deal with it, and your councillors can get them off their asses.

metacrisis · 11/01/2018 17:54

Because someone parked in her space for an hour? What are they gonna do, send out the Avengers?

Tapandgo · 11/01/2018 17:56

Well done OP _ lesson taught that won’t need repeating. You did the right thing the right way - and had very little other options as it was left up to you how you handled it by the police and university.

manicmij · 11/01/2018 17:58

Do you have anything in writing saying the space is for your use only. Copy and place on offending car stating you have the right to take them to court as they are technically trespassing on your property. Blocking them in if you can could be first stage and if parking continues hit them with the legal threat. Photo car in parking space for evidence. You do have rights.

PirateMother · 11/01/2018 18:14

Buy a second hand tyre lock and put it on anyone in your space. Charge £50 to take it off. Also put a sign up that says ‘private parking space under surveillance - £50 fine’

Bluelady · 11/01/2018 18:16

Dear God, is this still going?

expatinscotland · 11/01/2018 18:23

LOL this thread has it all! Aw, the poor CFers, they have anxiety, exams, you should have just let them, the virtue-signallers-come-merailers-come-GFs. Well played, OP! Hope they've learned their lesson.

PositivelyPERF · 11/01/2018 18:31

You forgot to mention the pps that don't read the thread, expat Grin

OutToGetYou · 11/01/2018 18:38

It would have been better if you had gone out when they first came back as that would have forced them to move and find a legitimate space, as it was, you sort of gave them a 'free pass' to be there the whole day.

But I doubt they'll do it again. I doubt they do it for fun though, they probably don't have enough spaces at the college or they charge a lot, and at least there was more than one person in the car :)

SoozC · 11/01/2018 18:45

I must be looking at the wrong websites then.
whatis.techtarget.com/definition/millennials-millennial-generation

Ariela · 11/01/2018 19:00

I would have got a sticky window envelope, and stuck it on the windscreen with a Parking Fine fee for using your space!

NottinghamNeil · 11/01/2018 19:02

What’s the point in having a sign that says it’s resident only parking, if it is unenforceable?

Symposium123 · 11/01/2018 19:09

@SoozC You’re right. The usual definition of a millennial is born ~1980 to ~2000. @metacrisis is talking about Gen Z.

Ever heard of buses, taxis, parent taxi, walk, pushbike, motorcycle, moped?
Surely anyone who is old enough to drive can also think of alternatives that don't involve parking in a private space.
If there are not enough spaces in college, then college and students should organise car sharing, or bus passes, or a walking club, you get the idea?
