Aibu to wonder how people do the school run with a new born?

Second baby due in a couple of weeks, drive to school is about ten mins, then couple of mins walk from parking area. My plan is to just unclick car seat and carry baby in that, DH says it will be too heavy and we need to buy a travel system so I can unclick car seat and wheel baby into school on buggy. Realistically can’t see myself doing that in a rush on a cold January morning! Aibu to wonder how other people manage it? ( not really much of an Aibu- sorry!)

I’m going to have exactly the same situation in a few weeks too. I’m thibking of buying a sling type thing to pop baby in to; I’ve seen other mums carrying the car seat (way too heavy for me to do that) or just carrying baby. Hopefully someone will have the solution for us both!

You can carry until they get too heavy then yeah I click the car seat onto the buggy. Did you not have a buggy like that with your first then? It's so convenient especially for a quick trip round Tesco!

Couple of minutes with a 7/8/9 lb baby, not a problem. Couple of minutes with a heavy 3/4 month old, different story! Also if you end up with a c section you might struggle to carry the car seat very far. Will your DP get 2 weeks paternity? He can do the school run or you both go together for the first few weeks then you will know where you stand and can always buy a travel system if you think you will need it.

This won't help as I didn't drive when I had my second baby, used to put in pram straight from cot (very good sleeper) and walk to school.

I carried dc2 in the maxi cosy, from the car park to the nursery. Couple of minutes walk. Still do that now and he’s 5 months. Can’t be bothered with getting the pushchair out of the boot and clipping the cosy in. Never mind getting baby out of the car seat and into a sling! Way too much hassle, especially as the baby will probably (hopefully) be sleeping.

We live five minutes away from school so I hadn't really thought about it.
Baby in pram, four year old in buggy board, or running ahead, off we go. I hope.

Oh and I had a section and my dc is pretty hefty. It is heavy but not that heavy!

Mr Trebus I used a sling with Dc1 and wasn’t doing the school run.

Not sure about the faff of taking baby out of car seat after ten mins in the car to put in a sling for ten mins before putting back in the car seat again- maybe this baby will be super chilled but DC1 would have lost patience with me! But equally don’t really want to buy a bulky pushchair just for the school run.

Aim to be twenty minutes early. If school starts at 9, leave the house at 8.20. That way no rushing and you have time to unclick and get out the travel system. It just takes you to get into a routine. You’ll be fine. You’ll need the pram though.

Use a sling ignore the faff and fuss baby will just have to get used to it.

It’s also less faff than removing the seat

No reason to complicate things. A couple of minute walk to school , just hold the baby in your arms!

If you get one of those travel systems it turns into a pushchair when you are not putting the car seat in it. It was the only buggy type thing we owned.

It is very convenient to transfer your sleeping baby in the car seat to the buggy then back to the car again.

could you not walk all the way? Ten minutes in traffic might be slower than walking and a lovely opportunity to chat with your firstborn.

Removing the seat takes seconds and the press of one button if you have isofix.

I had to park and walk to a lot of things and used to put the seat on the pram base for the walk. I'd suggest just buying a set of pram wheels second hand (off eBay/facebook etc) and then you can buy a seat to fit, or buy converter things if you already have a seat. They get stupidly heavy so quickly in their car seats.

Unless the weather was really bad, I found it much more convenient to walk with twins in buggy than to faff around with car seats and buggy. Depends what your walk is like though.

crumbs1 we live in the country side so ten minute drive translates to hilly 45 min walk otherwise would love not to have to drive.
We actually had a travel system for DC1 but I found it bulky and heavy and never really used it, so we sold it and just got a little light pushchair that was easy to use for trips to shops, travelling abroad etc. Dont want to make the same mistake twice.

Yes, you might find it takes a few minutes more.
I rarely used the travel system thing. More often I just carried the baby. Sometimes used a wraparound sling, sometimes just took baby out of car seat and put in buggy.

The afternoon school run, when you are hanging around, I used a buggy.

Put sling/carrier on at home under your coat then just lift baby into it and adjust when you get there, should only take a minute and keeps them warm and snug

I used to get 3 DC to 3 different schools when my DS was newborn, you have to have a very strict routine, I used to breastfeed DS in bed at around 5.30am, luckily he then used to sleep in his cot, shower, cuppa and face on for me, get DC up at 7, at the ages of 8, 10 and 13 they were pretty self sufficient apart from the arguing, I’d pack the younger ones lunches and school bag, find lost shoes, grab baby and put snowsuit on over pj’s and out the door. 2 DC were drop at the door and the other I had to park and walk. Popped DS in sling and all done. I appreciate I was very lucky as DS was a very placid baby, if he wasn’t life would have been much harder. You will find a routine and it will be a breeze after a couple of weeks.
