AIBU?

Aibu to wonder how people do the school run with a new born?

Second baby due in a couple of weeks, drive to school is about ten mins, then couple of mins walk from parking area. My plan is to just unclick car seat and carry baby in that, DH says it will be too heavy and we need to buy a travel system so I can unclick car seat and wheel baby into school on buggy. Realistically can’t see myself doing that in a rush on a cold January morning! Aibu to wonder how other people manage it? ( not really much of an Aibu- sorry!)

Her car is on her drive, I drop off at 8.50 and she leaves at 9. I literally get out, open the car door for my soon and jog him across the road. He goes through the gate and into School from there. Others do park there (drop off is 8.45-8.55) and she only ever says anything if it’s getting on 8.55 and they’re stood chatting. It’s the last house along before a bend so the last place you can park really as people get there so early and take all the other spots, it’s that or park at the village hall a 5 minute walk away which I do if I need to speak to a teacher before school and for pick up. It saves dragging my tantrumming 2 year old along a busy road.

I haven't read all the replies so sorry if this has been said. If you can get a joie carseat and then get the joie myrus pram. It's a light pram that is super easy to fold and unfold and the carseat just clips onto it. I walk to school (with a huge bulky travel system) but the little joie pram is fab when I'm out with my husband or mum in the car

Sorry if been said but buggy with lots of snuggly blankets and walk. It’s 10 mins. Much easier than driving.

This is it op, as you can see the carseat literally just pops into the pram. They are often around 100 but normally 79.99 in Argos so a bargain too!

Heartoffire Ten minutes in the car is a very long walk! Especially if that includes rural 60mph roads! Where we used to live didn’t even have footpaths so it wasn’t safe to walk.

Our school run is 10 mins in car.

I had to walk it once, without kids.
1hour 15mins.

Sling for baby. I had a car seat you couldn’t take out of the car. Plus those that you can take out get really heavy, and don’t last for the amount of time you’ll be taking the baby on the School run for.....pull up, take baby out of seat and slot into sling, tighten, go to the other side, get child out of seat, walk to school holding onto child hand. Schools here do not allow pushchairs into school, but if child is in younger years you have to go in with them, so take them in get them settled, back to car, baby in seat, home. Carry on doing this until smallest child is old enough to walk and hold hands properly and or oldest is big enough to drop and run.

I’d buy a secondhand pushchair chassis with adaptors for your car seat. Some strollers will work too; Eg baby jogger city mini. That’ll last as a pushchair until they’re a toddler.

How can it possibly be easier to walk. A ten minute car journey takes over an hour to walk!

Tbh I tried the sling and car seat but it’s such a faf I just pick baby up and have a blanket around him and his warm pram suit.

Our school lets brand new mums drive into the staff car park for drop offs. Is that an option?

I found it easier to pop baby in a sling (had a stretchy wrap and would tie it at home and then could slide baby straight in) than lug car seat about. But then he was more likely to have screamed all the way in car seat than be snuggly and content and not want to be disturbed.

After drop off I would bf in car before setting off home/going shopping or wherever as although it was a short journey with built in safety net time and walking to and from playground it ended up being almost time for another feed by then.

I have a one year old and a newborn to take on the school run. Unclipping just one car seat would be a dream! I put the double buggy up, attach the carry cot, transfer them both and walk from the car. If I get a close space I carry the baby in the car seat and the one year old —runs away— walks with me.

One will be fine.

My double doesn’t allow for a car seat attachment sadly.

Have to say I bought a new buggy to keep in the car just for this as had a 2 year old as well. It is a babyjogger and I had the car seat attachments permanently on, so it was a two second job. I still use it now he’s 15 months.

I used a wrap sling and it was very quick and easy to pop DS in there which left me hands free to deal with DD. Maybe practice with a doll until you have your sling technique sorted? I also managed to breastfeed DS in the sling so he spent a lot of time in there.

Dizzylin · 10/01/2018 21:04

I used a sling, but I used to put it on before setting off so just had to pop DS in at school. Used a buggy when he got older but sling is much easier.

I only have one dd so not actually experienced this exactly but my dd was ok to carry in seat at first but is 6 months and 12 pounds now and I have a bad back so I now just keep the travel system base pram in the boot pop it down and click the seat on so easy... I couldn't be bothered carrying the seat or messing with a sling

I have recently gone through this, same situation as you but I quickly found the car seat too heavy and to be honest the travel system I had took 2 seconds to out up and to put car seat on. Saved me getting baby in and out of car seat especially when he was sleeping. I did this most days from him being a week old. Now at 8 months loves the school run he knows whennit is time and gets excited because of all the attention he gets- kids, mum's teachers etc

No it doesnt! 2 mins of that is getting everyone clipped in. 3 mins of ACTUAL proper driving. 3 mins ground to a halt in near school traffic and then 2 mins parking illegally, if most the school run drivers round here are anything to go by

So much easier to walk past all the school run parking drama and bun fights over people getting blocked in!
