AIBU?

Aibu to wonder how people do the school run with a new born?

Second baby due in a couple of weeks, drive to school is about ten mins, then couple of mins walk from parking area. My plan is to just unclick car seat and carry baby in that, DH says it will be too heavy and we need to buy a travel system so I can unclick car seat and wheel baby into school on buggy. Realistically can’t see myself doing that in a rush on a cold January morning! Aibu to wonder how other people manage it? ( not really much of an Aibu- sorry!)

We had a travel system but it was bulky. How about a standard buggy that's suitable from birth?

I've had so much use out of my travel system and isofix car seat. Yes, it's a bit annoying getting the frame in and out of the car but less so than faffing with a sling and having to get them out of the car seat.

I'm going to really miss it i think when i have to go up to the next car seat size soon. As pp have said it's good for quick shopping trips too.

I'm sure a Quinny zapp is compatible with a maxi cosi as are a few less bulky options- baby jogger city mini , maybe Maclaren Techno although not sure on that. But I can understand not wanting to have more than you need so maybe see how it goes.
I am undecided as to what I will do but I end up carrying my dd's stuff for her half the time so not sure I'd be able to carry a baby and help.her sort various bits out. She is only 5 though.

I thought everyone used travel systems these days! I have a sling but it's a ball ache to take sleeping baby out of seat, into sling and back again. We have a bugaboo chameleon with a kiddy lay flat car seat (has a mechanism which pushes the seat flat while baby is in it so no worries about spending to long sitting and squished. All above God sends - wish I had both with my first!

Get a quinny zapp frame secondhand to click the mai cosi into, they fold down so small, would fit in footwell. Could pick one up for very little £.

As other posters have said with the iso fix base you literally click the car seat in and out of the car. A couple of seconds to get the wheels up, click it on and off you go.

A sling is ok but I think it's more hassle to get baby in car seat, out of car seat and into sling then out of the sling and back into the car seat.

You'll find the travel system really useful for nipping found the shops too.

Sorry I can't see the problem with either suggestions.

Open boot, get out pram, click into place- 1 minute, open door undo car seat 15 seconds max, click car seat onto pram 15 seconds
Or
Put on sling 10 seconds, Undo car seat strap 10 seconds, get out baby and sit in sling 10 seconds, do up sling and adjust 15 seconds.

It really is no time at all to do either. I done both with my LO on the school run. And as you go on, the quicker it becomes.

Now getting LO up and ready, and ds1 ready- wash, clean teeth, dress, breakfast, changing Lo and breakfast, nappy, wash and so on was another ball game for me. I swear ds2 knew exactly when we were about to leave as he would either be sick or have a poo. Or ds1 would suddenly remember that they had to take in their instrument for extra practice, or they had forgotten their pe kit etc. That part was my headache, despite being 'organised' and getting things ready the night before.

I would get a travel system and use an isofix tbh.

I woudlnt card around with taking the baby out of the car seat and putting into a sling and risk waking them!

I bought a Quinny Zapp for just this scenario last year. It's still being used as our main buggy for my now toddler. Basically you can store the seat part separately and have the frame set up so the Maxi Cosi car seat just clicks into it.

I also used the isofix base so it was easy to click into the car too.

I still like it as a buggy as it's light and compact. It could be easier to steer one handed, but if your other children are school age that might not be a deal breaker.

I'm doing the school run with a 4 year old & a 6 week old. Driving nearer to the school (not particularly close as parking is a nightmare) then using a caboo sling which is so easy to get baby in & out.

We have to wait with our children until they are called in so can't imagine holding baby for a good 20 minutes unaided.

Also had my hands free this morning for a much needed umbrella!

We also have a quinny zapp xtra that the car seat clips in but slings are so much easier IMO.

I find it quite hard to be honest, I try park as close to school if I'm not walking as I struggle to carry baby (think I have prolapse) and worry that the weight will cause more damage and baby is a bit of a chunk.

Car seat/carry/clip car seat on buggy wheels takes about 1 minute...

I'm in a similar situation, second baby due in a few weeks and will have to do the school run (well, after the first 3-4 weeks, dh is doing it before then because I'm resting!). In the winter/when baby is little, I do plan to clip the car seat into a travel system and wheel him up. It's a 10 min drive, like yours, and then parking and walking like several minutes up a hill to the school. In a true rush, I could just grab the car seat and carry him, but the buggy is easier and safer. I often need to wait around for 5-10 minutes in the schoolyard once I get there and I'd need to put him on the ground for that. But there are always older kids running around, bouncing balls, etc. I'm afraid someone would fall over him or he'd get smacked in the face with a ball. Once he's a bit bigger and not sleeping all the time and it's warmer, I'll probably put him in a wrap rather than slog up there with the pram though.

If you don't have a travel system and don't want to buy one (they do make life much easier), I would probably just take him out of the car seat and carry him rather than carry the whole car seat, assuming he isn't sleeping (or you won't wake him up) and it's not freezing.

I was back doing school run when dd2 was 4 days old. If i could park in the school car park I carried the seat, otherwise travel system all the way! I sometimes used a sling if she was awake but quite often she'd dropped off so it was handy not to have to wake her up.

I can't remember any off the top of my head, but there are plenty of umbrella fold-type pushchairs that will take a group 0 car seat with the right adaptors.

I also did the newborn straight out of cot and into pram and walk to school, but then it was only a ten minute walk. Baby bathed and dressed properly when I got back.

I carried the car seat to the playground when he was firstborn but he was only 3lbs9oz when he came home. Once he started getting heavier, it was harder so I bought adapters for my buggy and just clip the seat onto the frame which is really quick. Sometimes I carry him in

I have 4 and it's actually easier with a newborn. They sleep. I used a sling and travel system depending on weather.

Oooh @SuzanneSays I did my very first nursery run today with my toddler and baby!

Similar set up to yours you park about 3-5 min walk from school (all depends on speed of other parents and children walking on the narrow sidewalk Grin).
The pram seems too much faff due to the above mentioned sidewalk.

I bought a Moby wrap. I put it on myself still in the house and popped the baby in when I parked up it took less than a minute to put him in and he slept through the walk and still slept when I took him out and put him back in the car seat.

I currently have three at three different locations Confused (quite close together tho) in central London and am heavily pregnant with number 4. I used to bike them in on a cargo bike (walking is a good 1hr 30 round trip) but since I got too big to do that safely have been driving and it is a real pain as have to park and get out 3 times and youngest is just 2 so able to walk fine but not speedy... I have a Baby Jogger City Mini GT which lives in the boot and use that for the two year old to push from car to school (five mins walk). Once the baby is here will probably use sling in early days and then Maxi Cosi on to the Baby Jogger.

I would suggest Maxi Cosi clipped on to buggy, sling in the early days - though in previous experience after 8-10 weeks they wake much more easily on transfer which can be a real pain!

We walk because it's up the road. Literally 5 minutes and it's so much easier than getting everyone in the car, getting both kids out of car seat and putting one back in while screaming. Ds1 is 3 ds2 is 4 month old, so grabbing the buggy, clipping the buggy board on the back and walking is so much easier and quicker.

I lifted the car seat out and put it on the travel system frame, literally just clicks in.

I've been there. I carried the car seat, then went to a sling. But getting baby out of a carseat and into a sling and when u get back to the car back out the slingand into the carseat is also time consuming not to mention it being uncomfortable when wearing a coat ect. I agree with your husband travel system is the way to go. Just get the chassis out and click baby seat onto it. Much easier and if baby is asleep u won't wake her/him.

Oh that doona was invented in my head years ago! Finally someone has made it real! Grin brilliant. If I was having another baby I’d be getting one, no questions. How much easier that would make travelling.
