Is it snobby of me to not want it in my bedroom?

DP wants us to have a TV in the bedroom.

We already have a massive TV in the living room, when actually when I lived alone, I never had one in the first place (would just stream films if in the mood for watching something).

I told him it just didn't sit right with me, a TV in the bedroom, and he said I was being a snob.

But I'm right aren't I?

Can anyone help me pinpoint why exactly it feels wrong? It just does to me, anyway!

Have you got a telly in your bedroom?

We have a tv in our room after I had surgery two years ago and DH popped one in there, it's just never gone away. I love it now and since I discovered Peaky Blinders on Netflix it's been my absolute favourite thing in the whole house. On New Years Day I stayed in bed the whole entire day alternating Disney films with DS2 and PB's with DH. Bliss. We're rough though, so it's fine.

FadedRed · 10/01/2018 11:22

Does your DP often resort to insulting you when he doesn't get his own way about things, Op?

mydogisthebest · 10/01/2018 11:24

Those of you who watch tv in bed, do you lay down and watch? I find that so uncomfortable it's untrue. Sitting up is uncomfortable too. I don't usually bother with tv in hotels because of that.

I can sit on my sofa and watch tv and be very comfortable

TheHolidayArmadillo · 10/01/2018 11:27

DH wants to get a TV in our bedroom, I'm dead against it. Not because I'm a snob, but because we already have 2x laptops, an iPad, a telly and 2x smartphones in the house, all of which are capable of streaming tv. On the extremely rare occasion that one of us is genuinely bedridden, the laptop or iPad on the bedside table is perfectly adequate, and the rest of the time I'd be driven insane by DH deciding to put his inane shit on when I go to the bedroom expecting to be able to go to sleep.

Chienrouge · 10/01/2018 11:28

I don’t find it comfortable watching TV in bed either.
We’ve just moved house and there’s a tv socket on the wall in the bedroom, and you can see where they had their wall mounted one. DH saw this as a sign that we should get a wall mounted TV in our room. Not a chance!

Redpony1 · 10/01/2018 11:28

Redpony

But why....? I’m assuming you’re 3 maybe 4 people. And you actually use 4 TVs.
Do you just watch a lot of tv or idk. Is this for... work?

Why not? There are 2 of us. Sometimes i want to watch something whilst being bored crapless cooking (i hate cooking)
Sometimes i want to lie in bed and watch a film. Sometimes DP wants to watch football whilst i want to watch something else. The 4th TV is in one of the guestrooms.

I hate quiet & i love tech.

And no, i'm not home much, I work full time and have 3 horses i do before and after work, as well as running 3 times a week. So i feel i more than earn my right to get lost in TV when i am home Smile

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2018 11:28

I lie down or sit up. Pillow/cushion arrangement is very important for comfort.

therealposieparker · 10/01/2018 11:28

I compromised on a TV in the bedroom because my husband wanted a super chav expensive for a shit made bed with a TV in it!!! I've let him win that so that I can have all power in downstairs rooms that others see. It is good that it slides down... but I hate beds to the floor and that we have this monstrosity and I'm not a WAG.

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2018 11:33

If you are against a TV in the bedroom, how about this as a compromise?

Is it snobby of me to not want it in my bedroom?
Jacobsbread · 10/01/2018 11:38

I've always had one. I used to find it a comfort when I lived alone. I am actually worse trying to get to sleep without one... my mind doesn't switch off. On the other hand with the tv on I'm out in a few minutes. It's nice to be watching something cuddled up with dh

Scabbersley · 10/01/2018 11:42

I am not going to even describe my bed tv watching arrangements

If you've got to this age and can't get your head round someone being able to get comfy enough to watch tv in bed, I can't help you.

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 10/01/2018 11:42

Yes, of course. I was genuinely curious.

Chienrouge · 10/01/2018 11:44

I can get my head round it, I just can’t manage it myself! Just don’t find it comfy. I assume other people must though, or they wouldn’t do it.

Scabbersley · 10/01/2018 11:44

God me too redpony

I am not even going to justify my tv. Its bloody amazing to snuggle into my duvet and watch shite telly that dh doesn't want to watch.

Both dh and I are adults, so perfectly able to turn the tv off if the other one wants to go to sleep. We are so forthright, we might even ASK the other one to turn the tv off.

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 10/01/2018 11:57

DH won't have screens in our bedroom and I'm far posher than he is Grin

I am jealous of my friend who regularly watches films in bed with her DH.

My DH has many sleep issues though so it's not to be!

CheapSausagesAndSpam · 10/01/2018 11:59

Whoo God I am SO envious! Peaky Blinders in bed! Shock Perfection.

RoseWhiteTips · 10/01/2018 12:02

Definitely no television in the bedroom. Get away from it for a bit if you rely on it so much.
Anyway, surely you can use a tablet or a phone to watch tv in your bedroom. It’s more private and obviously more compact.

Scabbersley · 10/01/2018 12:05

Anyway, surely you can use a tablet or a phone to watch tv in your bedroom

LOL!

Why is the compactness even an issue? Or the privacy?

I either watch tv alone (bliss) or dh and I watch a movie together, all snuggled up. Much nicer than both frowning at phone screens.

LyraPotter · 10/01/2018 12:08

I don't think you are a snob, I think there are good reasons for not having a tv in the bedroom. IMO bedrooms should be for 2 things: one is sleeping, and I'll let you work out the other! A tv is likely to interfere with your bed time routine and / or sleep cycle and make it harder to wind down at night. I also think you're less likely to talk to your spouse before bed if there is a tv.

These are obviously just my views and I totally understand that others will have different opinions! But I'm with you OP, it wouldn't be for me.

RoseWhiteTips · 10/01/2018 12:08

I don’t frown at my iPhone.

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2018 12:08

No reliance on the the TV here. Just like to watch a few programmes in bed that's all. If we went somewhere with no TV I wouldn't care less.

Maybe some of the no TV in bedroom people struggle with willpower and would soon have square eyes. Grin

MrsNacho · 10/01/2018 12:10

We never had a TV in the bedroom until the DC got older and now have it on if we want to have sex just in case any of them wake up. We don't make loads of noise but I feel more comfortable that any noise we do make is disguised.

Trinity66 · 10/01/2018 12:11

I wouldn't consider it snobby, that's odd lol I do have one in my room, we don't use it loads really, atm I use it mainly to watch CBB because my DH hates it with a passion so I'd rather just watch it on my own upstairs

mydogisthebest · 10/01/2018 12:13

Scabbersely. There is just no comfortable way to watch tv in bed. If you lay down you are too low unless you have tons of pillows which I hate. If you sit up you have to have a couple of pillows behind your back and head. I am not faffing about with pillows in order to watch tv

Maybe if the tv is wall mounted it's a bit easier but I hate wall mounted TV's.

Why not just sit or lay on a nice comfy sofa?
