Is it snobby of me to not want it in my bedroom?

DP wants us to have a TV in the bedroom.

We already have a massive TV in the living room, when actually when I lived alone, I never had one in the first place (would just stream films if in the mood for watching something).

I told him it just didn't sit right with me, a TV in the bedroom, and he said I was being a snob.

But I'm right aren't I?

Can anyone help me pinpoint why exactly it feels wrong? It just does to me, anyway!

Have you got a telly in your bedroom?

I have and have always had a tv in my bedroom. Sometimes it's nice to snuggle in bed with a film. I see no issue with it. It isn't on all night.

Chienrouge · 10/01/2018 13:32

I am most worried Doctors might frown on me using the bedroom for ironing now.
I am seeing my GP next week and run all this by her

The thing is, it’s easy to think the sleep hygiene stuff is ridiculous and OTT when you don’t have sleep issues, but I’ve had lifelong insomnia (currently going through a patch of sleeping 2-3 hours a night, every night) and need all the help I can get. Sleep hygiene is important for me.

RandomWordsandaNumber5 · 10/01/2018 13:35

Never had a TV in the bedroom and don’t intend to. We prefer to have a quiet read and wind down before settling down to sleep.
It’s not good to watch tv prior to sleep; the lights and activity interfere with sleep patterns.

Butkin1 · 10/01/2018 13:37

We love our TV in our bedroom. Means that we can watch different programmes at night if we like (which we do).

More importantly we turn it on at 6am when our alarm goes off and we watch the BBC News, weather and sport before getting up at 6.30 to get ready for school run at 7.

I don't see any issues except the light of the TV would be annoying if we were trying to sleep..

Woodfordhound · 10/01/2018 13:41

I have a freestanding bath in my bedroom and a small tv on the wall opposite. I love having a relaxing soak whilst watching trash on tv.
My friend loved the thought too so she’s just redone her ensuite and has a tv built into the tiles at the bottom of her bath.

I’ve always thought that looks really wonderfully extravagant and luxurious, but doesn’t the steam make your bed soggy? (Sorry if that’s a ridiculously stupid question)

RainyApril · 10/01/2018 13:58

I agree that technology before bed is a bad idea, but if you're someone who would use an iPad or laptop or phone then that argument is moot.

Personally, I have a great big relaxing bedroom that has more than enough space for a tv and I love watching the news every morning, and movies in the evening. I have no problem getting comfortable, find it no more slobby than watching tv downstairs, and put it off in time to read a couple of chapters of my book and wind down before bedtime.

Like anything, it is about how you use it, and only a problem if one person is ready to sleep, or if you find yourself regularly sitting separately from your dp watching different programmes.

It is lovely to cuddle up on a rainy Sunday morning, and a godsend if you're bedridden with illness.

As for common, naff, tacky, chavvy and downmarket. Well that is subjective. Unless you're the queen, someone will always be looking down on you. You look down on me for watching tv in my lovely cosy bed rather than on the sofa, and someone is looking down on you for saying 'pardon' or putting tomatoes in salad.

morningconstitutional2017 · 10/01/2018 14:05

I hate televisions in bedrooms and don't feel I'd agree to one in any circumstances.

I'd rather sit in a comfy chair to watch. Whenever I've been in a hotel and there's a tv which you're meant to watch from the bed I find that one of my feet goes numb or my hip hurts - I just can't get comfy so I decamp to a small chair (which I have to carry to the bedside) if possible.

UnderCrackers5 · 10/01/2018 14:10

OP, your DH does realise that the people on the tv can see out at you as well? next time the news is on, walk around the room and watch the eyes follow you.
For that reason alone, just say no.

Bumsnetnetbums · 10/01/2018 14:11

^^might be thick a f but is this true with smart tellys??

Notreallyarsed · 10/01/2018 14:14

putting tomatoes in salad

Eh? Why wouldn’t you put tomatoes in a salad? I’m puzzled now. it doesn’t take much

BitchQueen90 · 10/01/2018 14:35

Well, I'm single and sleep like a log regardless so it's fine for me.

DS has a TV in his bedroom. He's 4. I bet many would be up in arms about that. Grin

To be fair, he hardly ever watches it anyway. He gets bored sitting still for too long.

I always had a TV in my bedroom as a kid. I loved books and still do now as an adult.

UnderCrackers5 · 10/01/2018 14:36

You are not thick Bumsnet.. but yes. smart tvs as well.
Last week I was cooking a curry while watching Corrie, a few hours later some of the cast and crew popped by. They said it smelled so good they would swap a few autographs for a taster.

I would never have one in the bedroom. just. say. no.

Blemnblep · 10/01/2018 14:39

Loads of people don't realise bumsnet

Naga from the BBC breakfast laughed at me last week because I fell over putting my socks on! Cheeky cow!

Bumsnetnetbums · 10/01/2018 14:44

Are you shitting me now??Confused

putting tomatoes in salad

I usually don’t. It depends on the salad.

we mostly have a simple ‘green salad’. Rarely a mixed salad and then there are obviously also the more ‘elaborate’ recipes... and in summer we sometimes just make a salad with some more ‘substantial’ ingredients (as the whole meal).

How do you do it? (I’m always curious about British food culture :))

Bumsnetnetbums · 10/01/2018 15:07

Sandwiches arent sandwiches without tomatoes...

TatianaLarina · 10/01/2018 15:13

How do you do it?

Personally I don’t put tomatoes in green salad.

I like Italian mozzarella and tomato salad with basil. Greek tomato salad with feta, olives, cucumber and radishes. Or tomato salsa with spring onions, lime, fresh coriander and a sprinkle of sugar.

RhiannonOHara · 10/01/2018 15:19

'Mixed' salads (e.g. lettuce, tomato, cucumber) are sometimes for some reason viewed as lower-class; Nigella Lawson, archetypal upper-middle-classer that she is, says in one of her books 'There is a green salad and then there is a tomato salad.'

I'm common as muck and when I was growing up lettuce, tomato, cucumber WAS salad. Grin

RainyApril · 10/01/2018 15:25

'Watching the English' by Kate Fox is all about English culture and the class system. One of the (very very many) things that the upper classes apparently scoff at is putting tomatoes in salad. It is considered working class. This book is ace for class-related angst and realising how common you are, regardless of bedroom tv pretensions. I say, eat tomatoes in salad if you like them and watch tv in bed if you want to.

TatianaLarina · 10/01/2018 15:25

I’ve never heard of mixed salad associated with a class.

Badeyes77 · 10/01/2018 15:28

I struggle to fall asleep without the TV on. I have the volume turned down so low I can't hear the words, and have the screen dimmed as possible so I can't see the picture...I don't even watch it, I turn my back to it. But if it gets switched off by do I wake up. If I go away and there's no TV in the bedroom I have nightmares and/or wake up with my heart racing in a real panic.

But I understand why some people don't like the idea of it!

Notreallyarsed · 10/01/2018 15:30

@FreddieClaryHorshieLion I do lettuce (iceberg), tomatoes (usually cherry chopped in two), cucumber.

Or rocket, spinach, watercress and cherry tomatoes.

Or a Greek salad minus the red onion because it gives me horrific heartburn.

Tomatoes on a sandwich are lovely but only if you’re eating it straight away, soggy sandwiches are rotten!

Notreallyarsed · 10/01/2018 15:31

I'm common as muck and when I was growing up lettuce, tomato, cucumber WAS salad.

My grannie was a Lady (ie granda was knighted) and she pooh poohed anything else as pretentious Grin (I’m not posh in any way, I’m the family disappointment Grin)
