We rushed out of the last thread without even a pocket handkerchief: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/a3124599-Trump-2018-Resistance-is-Never-Futile

So here's a new one, with its own

I am the very model of a Very Stable Genius.
I have a mighty button and no problems with my penius.
I have no time for television, golf or social media
Since my brain is way way better than the best encyclopedia.

I'm cutting tax, I'll build a wall, I'll take away their medicare
You can trust me 'cos I'm orange and I have the most amazing hair.
So with my total ignorance of matters heterogeneous
I am the very model of a Very Stable Genius!

Compared to other leaders, my behavior's quite unusual
My twisted tweets and pissed-on sheets have managed to amuse you all
I have to drink two-handed 'cause my fingers are the teeniest
I need a sippy-cup with the inscription "Stable Genius."

Thank you Adam Levine, The Federalist, in interview on @foxandfriends “Donald Trump is the greatest President our Country has ever seen.”

TheDowagerCuntess · 12/01/2018 03:26

What I don't understand about Trump is that he is doing nothing - absolutely nothing - to appeal to anyone other than his base. He doesn't appear to be trying to draw new voters in at all.

And support among his wider (if not, core) base appears to be dwindling.

Is this part of a master plan?

I mean, I don't understand how he won the 2016 election (I mean, the electoral collage handed it to him), so I'm even more confused as to how he thinks these whack job policies will appeal to enough people to get him re-elected. Confused

Can anyone shed any light?

juliesaway · 12/01/2018 04:23

Not sure there is any “master plan”. There may be i guess if only that people are now used to his “outrages”. He’s not a politician or a diplomat (clearly). he’s just being himself. People are starting to get immune to his unfiltered utterings. The comment about “shithole countries, everyone from Haiti has Aids, and of course the Africans don’t want to go back to their mud huts” would have been the immediate end for any normal politician. Same with the tweets - which are if written by anyone else, would simply just be seen as “outrage trolling” - attention seeking abuse which a troll puts up on the net for (often deliberately) negative attention. Trump simply gets away with it (most forums ban people for the type of ad hominem attacks he routinely puts out). Most people now just shrug after a few minutes laughing or horrified. With Trump, these latest comments will be ignored in the next 24 hours as the show moves on to the next thing. As long as the economy stays good he’ll probably be voted back in.

TheDowagerCuntess · 12/01/2018 04:51

So what does this say about Americans?

OuaisMaisBon · 12/01/2018 05:21

juliesaway, the depth of your cynicism has taken my breath away Sad That you have good reason to believe that Americans would re-elect such a morally defective shithole of a president is bigly sad. And also, what TheDowagweCuntess said.

OuaisMaisBon · 12/01/2018 05:22

Sorry, Dowager

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 12/01/2018 05:34

thedowager he’s trying to rally
The base because they’re the only ones who show him the adulation he thinks he deserves. I don’t think he is playing a calculated game - he’s a racist twat who seeks admiration and fawning and people like coulter started attacking him about his stance on DACA so the not rushing to correct/apologise for this, aside from being Bannon’s philosophy that you nevertheless back down or show contrition, is an attempt to throw a bone to woo his fans back.

That the gop will inevitably stand by doing nothing, other than “be concerned/troubled” might be an indication that they no longer feel he need to disguise the avarice/working for the rich/white supremacist tendencies because they are confident that they can gerrymander and suppress their way to another win.

A third of Americans have always been this way inclined (rejecting evidenced-based reality such as believing the earth is flat, evolution didn’t occur etc). What’s new is the GOP’s complete inability to act as any sort of check or balance and wholesale abandoning of adhering to normal moral codes. This is probably because they’re wholly
in power and appear to have decided to hang on by any means possible, which doesn’t include appealing to a wide swathe of the population and winning votes but using institutions of power to change the landscape so they have every advantage going. That’s why it’s so important for people to register to vote and check their registration status, and to push back now on voting suppression/gerrymandering so as many seats are flipped in the mid terms so that the dems gain the ability to act as Congress is meant to and oversee the executive branch rather than merely enabling it.

Reason I canceled my trip to London is that I am not a big fan of the Obama Administration having sold perhaps the best located and finest embassy in London for “peanuts,” only to build a new one in an off location for 1.2 billion dollars. Bad deal. Wanted me to cut ribbon-NO!

OK, here is a summary:

  • The president is claiming he's not going to visit a top ally because he's unhappy about a real estate decision by the Obama admin
  • The decision was actually made by the Bush admin
  • The decision was made for anti-terror reasons
  • It is midnight

The significance is bigger than “shithole.” The president’s supporters are pushing hard for a “merit-based” immigration model, but Trump today didn’t say he wants more doctors, engineers or scientists. He said he wants “Norway.” And Norway is not a skill.

TheClaws · 12/01/2018 06:29

Dowager I believe his ‘base’ is wider than we might think. He has a good range of working class, evangelical Christian (!!), Israel-supporting Jews, those who stand to gain from tax cuts (ie. millionaires/billionaires like him), business owners large and small, nationalists and supremacists - need I go on? Once you start thinking about it, his voters become more clear than simply “rednecks”. This is what he depends upon. These voters care little for his tweets or like their direct approach - it is 2018, after all, isn’t it? For many, they are tired of politicians. They want someone who is actively out there. And for better or worse, he is.

juliesaway · 12/01/2018 06:31

CNN is blatantly anti trump though. I hadn’t seen their website for a while until yesterday and it is clearly “anti” - no question of any balance.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 12/01/2018 06:31

This resonates with my worries about what bannon’s call from grace really signals

Bannon's brutal ouster from Trump and Breitbart circles should frighten Americans

TheClaws · 12/01/2018 06:32

I find the “shithole” comment amusing, BTW, given Trump’s slogan is “Make America Great Again”. Does that mean America is currently a shithole too, according to him?

TheClaws · 12/01/2018 06:37

I suppose, Jules, the point is Fox will refuse to cover the comments Trump made at all.

TheClaws · 12/01/2018 06:44

Wait ... I found something on Fox. Lovely attempt at minimisation: “There’s so many more offensive things going on in the world.” That’s true, but that doesn’t mean the POTUS gets to behave like that. I WANT him to care.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 12/01/2018 06:56

What balance are you looking for?

“Yes the most powerful man in the world is a divisive racist sowing hatred but when he was 11 he once shared a slice of his lemon cake with a sibling?”

Covering trump factually and reporting on his actions will mean saying he’s not very good at being president and that actions he has taken are contradictory, not of benefit to any but the rich and racially motivated. And being anti-trump means being anti-white supremacy, anti-corruption and anti-incompetence; I see no reason to take issue with that.

OuaisMaisBon · 12/01/2018 06:59

He wasn't joking about his racist feelings about Obama during his campaign, was he? We just couldn't believe that anyone like him would ever get elected to the White House, because that would just be a joke, wouldn't it?

While my opinion of Trump can fall no lower, my perspective on those who still support him takes yet another little hit with each stupid, racist, dangerous remark or action of his.
