That pineapples don't grow on trees, but grow in the ground? I'm well educated, went to university (twice), but I had never thought about where my pineapple had come from, and it never occurred to me that the 'chopped' end was on the bottom and not the top!

What didn't you know until recently?

There's a building in Scotland shaped like a pineapple. You can hire it for a holiday en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunmore_Pineapple

Tippz · 08/01/2018 18:42

Well... I don't wanna sound like Smuggy McSmugface, but I knew pineapples grew in the ground - I really did..... (I found this out from farmville about 6 years ago haha.) Grin When I 'harvested' the pineapples, they were yanked out of the ground yes. Smile

But I did NOT KNOW HOLLAND WAS NOT A COUNTRY!! Confused

MIND!

BLOWN! Shock

There are many things I didn't know til adulthood (that I really should have known,) but one example of a thing I got wrong/didn't know til LAST YEAR...

I thought Tigers were from Africa. Blush

They are from Asia obvs! Blush

(I am in my late 30's...)

ButchyRestingFace · 08/01/2018 18:43

I'm 39.

This pineapple lark is news to me.

ButchyRestingFace · 08/01/2018 18:44

"Giving birth is difficult for female hyenas, as the females give birth through their narrow clitoris, and spotted hyena cubs are the largest carnivoran young relative to their mothers' weight. During parturition, the clitoris ruptures in order to facilitate the passage of the young, and may take weeks to heal."

Do you mind ! Im trying to eat my sausages here...

My fact for the 10,000 is neither the Mona Lisa nor Whoopie Goldberg have eyebrows.

Figgygal · 08/01/2018 18:49

I'm 37 next week and didn't know that either

Nicktynoo · 08/01/2018 18:54

I just Googled hyenas. I’m never going to be the same (I’m 37 and apparently have a lot to learn!)

Males take no part in the raising of young. Giving birth is difficult for female hyenas, as the females give birth through their narrow clitoris, and spotted hyena cubs are the largest carnivoran young relative to their mothers' weight.

ColonelJackONeil · 08/01/2018 19:04

You've got to give those mama hyenas credit, they go through all that and they're still laughing.

lougle · 08/01/2018 19:17

Ahh kippers as fish, I understand now! No, there are no kippers swimming around in our seas, and I don't think that smoked herrings would get very far if they tried to swim, either 🤣

Peanuts don't grow in the ground like potatoes, they are much weirder than that.
The plants flower, form a "stalk" which then lunges downwards and burrows it's way into the earth, before forming peanuts.
Potato flowers just become potato berries above ground like most plants.
The bit you eat is the tubers, which were always underground.
Crocodiles bury their eggs in mounds at different depths, to maintain different temperatures, which determines which eggs become male and which become female.

Shhhsleeping · 08/01/2018 19:42

If you hold up your hands with the backs facing you and the thumbs out, the left hand makes the L shape. I was 39 when my 6 year old told me that. I was always you write with your right.

Iwanttobe8stoneagain · 08/01/2018 19:42

Knew about pineapples but not cashew nuts no wonder they’re so expensive

NauticalDisaster · 08/01/2018 19:43

I am mid forty-ish, last month my son asked me what came after trillions, I couldn't remember so looked it up... I never before realised that it followed bi/tri/quad numeral prefixes. How did I miss that? I loved maths in school, we must have learned it at some point.

lonelymum86 · 08/01/2018 19:45

I didn’t know that but I’m scared to google what a pineapple tree looks like.

I thought they grew in palm trees like coconuts.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 08/01/2018 19:47

mustbemad ow! Xmas Shock

LordSugarWillSeeYouNow · 08/01/2018 19:50

Sorry I meant to say "stunt pineapple" but my dc and dp take the piss out of me all the time with my "show towels" "show bathroom products" etc.

I do have diagnosed OCD though and am very obsessed with cleaning and making things look nice.

To be honest, the pineapple does look nice but is a bugger to keep standing up.

My dd's teacher probably thinks I'm a weirdo as dd told her that we have show towels and she used one and I got cross- oops Grin

ForalltheSaints · 08/01/2018 19:53

What an ewok is.
The houses in Harry Potter.

LordSugarWillSeeYouNow · 08/01/2018 19:56

Oh but my dc do think that money grows on trees!

thefirstmrsrochester · 08/01/2018 20:01

I read of someone’s DH gazing at their newly arrived first born and say “but her eyes are open.....”. Turns out he expected babies eyes to be closed for the first few weeks of life. To be honest, it was news to me that puppies eyes were closed at birth. The things you learn.

CoperCabana · 08/01/2018 20:06

I am learning a lot tonight! Am working through, making notes.

But I am nearly 50 and this Christmas is the first time I ‘got’ Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. I thought it was one stormy Christmas Eve... won’t you ride my sleigh tonight. I thought he picked Rudolph randomly. But then I found out from my kids, that is was in fact a FOGGY night and Santa wanted Rudolph to GUIDE his sleigh because of his glowing red nose!

Massive revelation and face palm!

LordSugarWillSeeYouNow · 08/01/2018 20:14

I've said this before on MN but my ex fiancé thought that a BLT sandwich was " breakfast, lunch and tea " all made up on one sandwich.

And he's very clever.

I sent it to the More magazine, remember the back page? Men overheard? And it was bloody well published! My only claim to fame.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 08/01/2018 20:19

Fekko DS2 just demonstrated that he can lick his own elbow! Xmas Grin

mustbemad17 · 08/01/2018 20:21

My DD can lick her own elbow. She's hypermobile tho, dunno if that counts 😂

SophieGiroux · 08/01/2018 20:33

Same, I was in my 30s and mind blown when I saw them growing in the ground at the Eden project.
I blame the song Agadoo - push pineapple, shake the tree!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 08/01/2018 20:33

Pineapples grow in those little tins, don't they?
