Weird food combos

DH isn’t very confident when it comes to cooking. So if he does cook I try to just leave him to it.

He’s been off work for two weeks and at home (he’s in the forces and lives on base so when he’s home he’s not working but I am).

He’s been cooking dinner every night for the first time in 8 years which is great.

But he does some really weird food combos. Pie with baked beans (two wet things?) and chops with mash and cauliflower cheese (two carbs?) are two examples.

I wouldn’t and haven’t said anything but WTAF?

Ha yeah ana, I worked with someone who used to put pastry sausage rolls in buttered rolls.

Tried one once and it's definitely an aquired taste.

Catinthecorner · 07/01/2018 19:25

Isn’t lasagna made with two different wets? The tomato and meaty wet and the bechamel sauce wet.

x2boys · 07/01/2018 19:31

We call that a pie Barm in Bolton @Anasnake!

Anasnake · 07/01/2018 19:32

I call it a barm too (but that's a whole other thread) !!

x2boys · 07/01/2018 19:34

It is Grin

MrsMaxwell · 07/01/2018 20:04

Sweetcorn is a carb..?

OP posts:
peppapigwouldmakelovelyrashers · 07/01/2018 20:08

No it isnt. Lots of veg (and fruit) contains carbohydrates, but none of them are carbs in the way pasta bread and pastry are.

Karlakitten1 · 07/01/2018 20:10

My DM has pie and salad, that is a bit strange! Or pork chop, noodles and tinned tomatoes, sounds rank but is actually ok!

Karlakitten1 · 07/01/2018 20:11

Sausage roll, microwaved, then put between toast is something my DF loves. I must have weird parents!

XiCi · 07/01/2018 20:12

Eh? Sweetcorn is a vegetable. It's not recommended on a strict low carb diet as it has a higher sugar content and therefore a higher carbohydrate content than other vegetables such as ......cauliflower Grin however I wouldn't describe it, or any vegetable, as a 'carb' in the way you would bread or pasta

Elledouble · 07/01/2018 20:19

I’d probably sell a kidney for a macaroni cheese pie right now [drools]

ShimmeringBollox · 07/01/2018 20:22

So op, I am interested if your “wets rule” applies to pudding too. Would you have apple pie or crumble with custard ?
I know of people who have mash and salad, which just plain wrong. Mash should only be served with beans or gravy, not salad and definitely not salad cream Envy

Graphista · 07/01/2018 20:22

Farmfoods and Iceland still sell them round here but they're not as nice as Aulds ones.

Wtaf is wrong with mushy peas????

Yummy hot with lots of salt and vinegar

MrsMaxwell · 07/01/2018 20:35

Two wets for pudding is fine - lovely actually Grin

The only reason u wouldn't have gravy with a pie is if it was a cheese pie! Otherwise it's gravy and mushy peas all the way!!
I don't think the food is weird combos but maybe he's come up with it from eating from the mess and likes it! Also northern and southern food can be quite different

DerelictWreck · 07/01/2018 20:44

OP there's a difference between foods having carbohydrates in and being carbs! Sweetcorn is not a carb Grin

ButFirstTea · 07/01/2018 20:45

OP you said earlier you make macaroni cheese but you also think cheese is a carb so aren't you breaking your own rules...?!

MrsMaxwell · 07/01/2018 20:45

He comes from the land of the Parmo which is actually bloody lovely but a heart attack on a plate!

Not now I know that cheese is not in fact a carb Grin

What? Cheese pie and gravy with a drop of HP on the side is beautiful

goose1964 · 07/01/2018 21:01

OP never go to Wales and have half and half, half a portion of chips with half a portion of rice. It's lot better than it sounds.. Especially a with a Clark's pie an curry sauce

iklboo · 07/01/2018 21:02

We have half & half in Manchester too - chips, fried rice, curry sauce. Mmmm.

MrsMaxwell · 07/01/2018 21:14

Chips and rice is just wrong.

Mushy peas are vile (although forced to eat at Primary School by dinner ladies).

OP posts:
Graphista · 07/01/2018 21:23

Chips n noodles common option on takeouts here too

SkaPunkPrincess · 07/01/2018 21:26
