Weird food combos

DH isn’t very confident when it comes to cooking. So if he does cook I try to just leave him to it.

He’s been off work for two weeks and at home (he’s in the forces and lives on base so when he’s home he’s not working but I am).

He’s been cooking dinner every night for the first time in 8 years which is great.

But he does some really weird food combos. Pie with baked beans (two wet things?) and chops with mash and cauliflower cheese (two carbs?) are two examples.

I wouldn’t and haven’t said anything but WTAF?

I want to live in Scotland now the food sounds delicious Envy I like battered fish soaked in gravy does that blow your mind Op?

Eliza9917 · 07/01/2018 14:16

I always serve mash AND bread & butter with stews.

Agree eggs & beans should never touch. Sauce, or gravy, should never be put on beans either IMO.

I used to hate my mum serving shepherds pie & beans, absolutely rank IMO, but then I hate shepherds pie any way.

Fish with gravy Shock

In regards to pie filling mixing with your beans i build a little chip/mash bridge between the two so they cant touch. Problem solved Grin

Anasnake · 07/01/2018 14:25

I like my chippy fish with curry sauce Grin

Ermmm6 · 07/01/2018 14:56

Definitely chips with lasagne.

Then put vinegar on the lasagne. Honest you wouldn’t believe what it does for the taste it’s like actual magic Grin

Huntinginthedark · 07/01/2018 14:56

This is just surreal

MyNewBearTotoro · 07/01/2018 15:02

Where on earth are you getting your kievs from to count them as a ‘wet’? Aren’t Kiev’s usually breaded chicken - if your chicken is wet and runny you have a problem!

x2boys · 07/01/2018 15:07

Yeah I don't mind curry sauce on my chippy fish either Anasnake Grin but prefer gravy Smile

GrooovyLass · 07/01/2018 15:12

I don't eat meat but is kiev not hollow and filled with garlic sauce or something?

And I need to know more about this macaroni cheese pie...

x2boys · 07/01/2018 15:15

It is Grooovy and tbh its not that wet at least when its cooked I have found them very dry .

AdaColeman · 07/01/2018 15:18

They all just seem like ordinary meals to me.

What other strange food rules have you got OP? Smile

Lasagna and chips used to be standard pub grub.

If your mashed potato isn't wet, you've not added enough butter or olive oil! Grin

Graphista · 07/01/2018 15:22

Macaroni cheese pie - made from hot crust pastry, filled with macaroni cheese then topped either with grated cheese or mash AND grated cheese. Best ones are from Aulds (bit like greggs but BETTER Grin)

If you like vinegar on lasagne - try salad cream on macaroni cheese - totally lush!

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 07/01/2018 15:23

I love Kiev with mash and cauliflower cheese

Omgg me too SheGotOffThePlane 😍😍

Loyaultemelie · 07/01/2018 15:24

He can definitely cook here anytime! Also definitely yy to chips and lasagna Grin

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 07/01/2018 15:24

Omg Graphista!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Graphista · 07/01/2018 15:26

And that's really just a snack up hereGrin

DerelictWreck · 07/01/2018 15:26

Cheese is a carb? Cauliflower is a carb?

WHAT are you on about Grin

Cheese is dairy and fat, and cauliflower is a vegetable!

peppapigwouldmakelovelyrashers · 07/01/2018 15:28

Macaroni cheese pie - made from hot crust pastry, filled with macaroni cheese ten topped either with grated cheese or mash AND grated cheese

That sounds filthy. In the best way!

lynmilne65 · 07/01/2018 15:34

gravy n chips 🤤😋

Floellabumbags · 07/01/2018 15:38

Just remembered MIL hoicks her judgy pants if anyone tries to have ketchup and baked beans on a cooked breakfast - enough sauce in the beans, apparently

What about brown sauce? Is that allowed? I always have brown with beans.

JustAnIdiot · 07/01/2018 15:58

Sadly no, Floella - baked beans = no sauce at all Sad

lynmilne65 · 07/01/2018 16:09

☹️

wowfudge · 07/01/2018 16:30

Given how many people seem to think eggs are dairy (wtf?), I am not surprised there is confusion over the food groups in cauliflower cheese.

PinkyBlunder · 07/01/2018 16:31

I have terrible food issues. If I was served pie with baked beans it would probably reduce me to tears. Agree in principle about two different wets, although pie and gravy is actually ok, took me a while to get to that stage though!

Don’t feel quite as passionate about double carbs but I wouldn’t choose to do it.

Weirdest combo I’m happy with is bacon and banana.

So generally I’m with you!
