Openly judgmental towards tattoos?

StandardRussian66 · 03/01/2018 14:48

My OH is tattooed from the neck down. They are cultural tattoos and he is a big guy, over 6ft and does body building.
I knew him years ago when he didn’t have the tattoos and when he was slim. Strangers were nice to him, and treated him like any other person. But now, he finds that men tend to square up to him on nights out, shop staff and waiting staff are abnormally abrupt and people in general is just openly quite hostile towards him. It makes me sad, and makes him anxious about going out.

AIBU to think most people aren’t this ignorant that they can’t see past the ink and see that he’s just a normal guy who wants to be able to enjoy a glass of coke in his local pub without men puffing their chests out at him whenever he walks by?
I thought we were over this in this day and age.

What rules have the military relaxed in the past eight or so years?

Interested because nobody could ever find anything about tattoos to quote to me and tattoos and the Navy have been pretty synonymous for centuries. Even King George V had tattoos from his navy days.

If I remember correctly, they'd actually tightened up the rules with no tattoos on hands or above collars - all to be covered in No 1s.

mustbemad17 · 03/01/2018 21:03

Not me likes!!

It's sad that people are so shallow. Surely personality trumps looks?? Looks change - with or without the tattoos!!

TooManyPaws · 03/01/2018 21:03

But if people rate tattoos so much why do so few have facial tattoos? It’s a mystery...

Hardly, if you give it a second's thought. It's a pretty crap canvas.

My husband was truly terrifying to look at. rose you would’ve loved him.

Sandy does it not bother you that you basically just admitted you have some form of control over your daughter, that will extend into adulthood??

I don't see it as control ...I share my experiences with her of those disappointed applicants who longed to be officers and couldn't. Why wouldn't I give her the benefit of my experience and knowledge.
It's the same way I tell her that a university education is the way to go for a good career, which will pay for her high taste.

Sandy rightfully so, just like someone with a Britain First tattoo would say a lot about a person

Yep. We rejected lots with British bulldog tats and union jacks.

Then they'd day...if they removed it with laser surgery wouldwe accept them. I had to explain it wouldn't be automatic and they could still be rejected on another part of the process.

Tattoo’s do look a bit shit but I would never judge anyone with them. My best friend is covered in them and I don’t and would never tell her anything negative about them because I know she loves them x

dailyshite · 03/01/2018 21:05

There are an awful lot of narrow minded people on here (even moreso than usual for a tattoo thread I think).

I can't think of anything more soul destroying and depressing than having to spend my life as a stepford wife, complying with what someone else has decided is the norm in order to get on in life.

Tattoos are permanent - that's the point!
Why not get the art on your wall instead? Because it's part of me, who I am and what is important to me.

Self harm - not in the slightest
Look ugly - to you perhaps, I love mine. I think twinsets, fake tans and eyelashes, botox etc. look ugly as a rule but given that I don't have to have them I wouldn't comment.
Affect your career - Doesn't seem to have done mine any harm, as a senior clinician / manager, senior lecturer / academic. I've got any job that I applied for since having tattoos.

If you don't understand why people have one, don't have one, but don't be a twat about it.

mustbemad17 · 03/01/2018 21:05

Toomany a friend of mine has been in the Army for two years now. He has a tattoo on each wrist & one on the top of his hand. The rest are covered. When my younger brother went to join before Uni (so about 8ish years now) they weren't allowed hand tats & wrists had to be able to be covered.
They seem to have relaxed the facial hair rule too judging by my mate's face when i saw him last week 🙄

Ollivander84 · 03/01/2018 21:06

What makes me laugh is people would judge me on my lack of tattoos. Until I strip off and they realise I have 9, including two big thigh pieces GrinWink

mustbemad17 · 03/01/2018 21:07

Sandy not necessarily re University education. Some of the most successful people in the country don't have a Uni degree...and lots of people with decent degrees have low paying jobs despite it!

Weirdly, I like him though despite the tats.

StandardRussian66 · 03/01/2018 21:09

Well that’s Tom Hardy. You’re only human.

I am itching to see people's tattoos now 😂😂

Ollivander84 · 03/01/2018 21:10

One of my thigh tattoos

Openly judgmental towards tattoos?
Onetwothree2018 · 03/01/2018 21:11

dailyshite I think if you’ve got tattoos you are ‘complying with the norm’ now. So many people have them. It’s the new normal. Tattoos are boring in my opinion but each to their own 😊

RoseWhiteTips · 03/01/2018 21:11

Au contraire. You could fit lots of little butterflies into a face...

NotACleverName · 03/01/2018 21:12

Strangely Tom Hardy does nothing for me. I have never gotten the appeal at all.

RoseWhiteTips · 03/01/2018 21:12

...onto a face

mustbemad17 · 03/01/2018 21:12

Olivander that's gorgeous! Did it hurt much on your thigh? I want the kids' handprints on my thighs, to look as if they're holding my leg. Have a tat on my foot which hurt like a bitch so hoping after that i can take this 😂

Ollivander84 · 03/01/2018 21:13

Hurt less than my inner ankle but I struggled with the length of time - it was around 5hrs

mustbemad17 · 03/01/2018 21:14

Yeah that would be me...longest one i've had in a sitting was three. Worth it tho, your tat is stunning

StandardRussian66 · 03/01/2018 21:16

My finger fucking hurt

OP posts:
TooManyPaws · 03/01/2018 21:17

@mustbemad

That's interesting, given that bluebird tattoos on the hands were such a traditional sailor tattoo. Now nothing that shows in No 1s. Gone the opposite way!

mustbemad17 · 03/01/2018 21:17

I chickened out of a finger tat 😂 Far too boney!! It's still on my list but it keeps getting relegated further down pmsl

cathyclown · 03/01/2018 21:17

Ollivander,

Won't be a problem unless you are going to be a lifeguard or some profession where your thighs will be visible.
