Openly judgmental towards tattoos?

StandardRussian66 · 03/01/2018 14:48

My OH is tattooed from the neck down. They are cultural tattoos and he is a big guy, over 6ft and does body building.
I knew him years ago when he didn’t have the tattoos and when he was slim. Strangers were nice to him, and treated him like any other person. But now, he finds that men tend to square up to him on nights out, shop staff and waiting staff are abnormally abrupt and people in general is just openly quite hostile towards him. It makes me sad, and makes him anxious about going out.

AIBU to think most people aren’t this ignorant that they can’t see past the ink and see that he’s just a normal guy who wants to be able to enjoy a glass of coke in his local pub without men puffing their chests out at him whenever he walks by?
I thought we were over this in this day and age.

Toomany is that Navy? It surprised me i will be honest...my dad's been Army 36 years & his are all coverable (is that even a word?!) but my mate is literally in his third year starting from the bottom - he had his visible hand one when he joined up. I know they dislike any that have personal details on too like DOB or names

cathyclown · 03/01/2018 21:22

TATS are indelible. They are there for life. Even laser removal is not guaranteed. What if you dislike the tat, or actually Grow Up and regret it?

What would you do.

SandyY2K · 03/01/2018 21:23

@FindoGask

I'm not overly traditional, but I'm hoping she goes of the idea.

Another thing is that we're black ... and I don't think tats look good on dark skin. They all tend to look green.

DD agreed with me on that point actually... but she knows I'll always love her regardless.

cathyclown · 03/01/2018 21:25

It is definitely not for NAICE areas.

That is the reality in general.

mustbemad17 · 03/01/2018 21:25

Cathy the day i 'grow up' to the point of judging someone based on a tattoo, i hope my family have me either committed or shot 😏

NotACleverName · 03/01/2018 21:25

I doubt anyone is going to give a shit about a tatted lifeguard... what are they gonna do? "Oh no, I'm drowning but don't save me as you have tattoos" Hmm

StandardRussian66 · 03/01/2018 21:26

I’m 26 am I a grown up? DP is 31?

I do think a tattoo can tell you about someone's character.

You wouldn't make a judgement of someone with a swastika or a British bulldog and some rifles over a Union Jack? Even as someone who can appreciate tattoos, who can consider it an art will know that they can convey people's warped minds.

There's a show on MTV now with people giving their mates a tattoo as a form of revenge or a joke. Usually it's something absurd or humiliating. I think it tells you about someone's character if they have a penis tattood on their body.

SandyY2K · 03/01/2018 21:28

@mustbemad17

Of course. Richard Branson didnt go to Uni and he hasn't done too bad for himself eh Smile

NotACleverName · 03/01/2018 21:28

People who say "naice" are worse than people with tattoos. Fact

cricketqueen · 03/01/2018 21:29

I'm 28 with a kid and a baby on the way. Own my house in a fairly nice area, dhhas a good job. What more do I need to do to be considered grown up?

mustbemad17 · 03/01/2018 21:29

I'd judge someone with hate tattoos. The same as I would judge someone who voiced hateful views.

Someone with a tribal tat, something personal to their life, a piece of art they loved etc? I'd be intrigued. There is no excuse for expressing racism or hate - verbally or otherwise

StandardRussian66 · 03/01/2018 21:29

That program is ridiculous. The problem is that kids go in their booze cruises to Malaga and get bad tattoos when drunk and it’s taken away the fact that tattooing is an art form. And most people who are serious about their art spend a long time thinking and planning what they want. I planned for 18 months with my artist about my tattoo on my side.

Tattoos are great. Dont get the big deal tbh.

SandyY2K · 03/01/2018 21:31

You wouldn't make a judgement of someone with a swastika or a British bulldog and some rifles over a Union Jack?

Did you mean would?

mustbemad17 · 03/01/2018 21:31

I do like the idea you can't get a tattoo whilst drunk altho we all know it isn't adhered to

A decent tattooist is an artist that is proud of their work. I've known some to refuse to do some tattoos because they don't feel they will best show their work. There's the type of tattoo artist you want to visit

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 03/01/2018 21:33

I think if you’ve got tattoos you are ‘complying with the norm’ now. So many people have them. It’s the new normal

This seems to be the case. At some pools/beaches etc. in the UK, where there's a mass of half-naked bodies, it does seem that the majority have them. It's more unusual to see a completely un-tattooed body.

dailyshite · 03/01/2018 21:34

dailyshite I think if you’ve got tattoos you are ‘complying with the norm’ now. So many people have them. It’s the new normal. Tattoos are boring in my opinion but each to their own

Have you read this thread?

Essentially, if you have a tattoo (according to some people on here), you are attention seeking, will never get a proper job, self-harming and have mental health problems, a bad influence on children, short sighted.... the list goes on...

I couldn't care less whether people like my tattoos or not, what does depress me is the assumption that my kids and the young people that I teach (and some older people!), should be taught that in order to get on in life you have to comply with a dated perception of what is naice and acceptable.

mustbemad17 · 03/01/2018 21:36

Totally off topic but if fking hate the word 'naice' 😬 If ever there was a word that represents snob it's that imo

cathyclown · 03/01/2018 21:37

Tats are a symptom of something.

Why would you do this to your skin knowing it can NEVER be deleted?

I am talking about very visible tats here.

I cannot understand anyone undergoing the pain and the time and the cost, to make themselves pariahs in many people's minds. But maybe they don't care. Fine, but others do care and do make judgments, that is the reality.

StandardRussian66 · 03/01/2018 21:38

cathy you’re just talking rubbish now

OP posts:
mustbemad17 · 03/01/2018 21:39

Some people smoke. Some people drink. Some people spend their money on tats.

KungFuEric · 03/01/2018 21:39

I was asking a question sandy for the people who were rubbishing the claim that a tattoo makes a statement about a persons character, or that you cant make a judgement about any of them.

dailyshite · 03/01/2018 21:40

Cathy - because it can never be deleted!

That's the point, it's permanent - it's a permanent part of me. I want it to be a permanent part of me, for very personal reasons.

SandyY2K · 03/01/2018 21:41

I have a midwife friend....who mentioned seeing several tats on women...that must have got them when they were younger and slimmer... but years later..older ..bigger ... skin stretched out...they don't look quite so good.
