Started at 13. Painful and heavy all my life. Stopped last year, I'm 51 and menopausal

AliceWhatsth3Matter · 31/12/2017 19:03

58, I haven't had a period for a few months. I was very regular until I was 56, then they became a bit erratic. They had been getting heavier through my fifties.

Apart from some hot flushes no other symptoms. My mother was 60 when she had her last period.

BlueSkyBurningBright · 31/12/2017 19:05

Started at 12. Several pregnancies, last one at 44 (mc). Now I am 53, still get periods every 28 days. Even on the Mirena I would get regular periods.

Had my first hot flush on Xmas day this year, no other symptoms. I am happy to keep having periods.

Dumbledoresgirl · 31/12/2017 19:09

51 when I had my last period.

Things had been haywire for a few years before that though.

The usual menopausal symptoms weren't anything to write home about for me, but I did suffer horribly with menstrual headaches that went on for days for pretty much all of my 40s until this year. Now 53 and I think, fingers crossed, they are moreorless over. Certainly nothing like they were and I haven't had one at all the last couple of months.

Zeropiddledwhilehomeburned · 31/12/2017 19:11

Started when I was 15, now 46 and I'm on day 102 of current cycle! Cycles have been all over the place for a few years now - the shortest was 16 days and the longest was 109, so I may soon beat my own record! I do like the months (and months) without periods but it does make me wonder when (or even if) the next one will strike - the not-knowing is quite annoying.

Only real symptoms apart from crazy cycles are hot flushes (not too bad) and crap memory.

Rossigigi · 31/12/2017 19:17

Started at 13, am now 37 and was recently tested for early menopause. Nope, all hormones fine. But suffering sweats, night sweats etc- was bloody gutted! I was hoping this was the end!

Lexie1970 · 31/12/2017 19:22

Had a MMC at 40 and from that point my periods were 2-3 months apart and very late with an occasional flood.. last period was when I was 44 (3 years ago).

Have never suffered any menopause symptoms but do wonder about osteoporosis etc as not offered HRT even with early menopause... would also have liked another child but not meant to be Sad

1moremum · 31/12/2017 19:28

Will be 53 in February. Beginning about 18 months ago, my cycles became extremely unpredictable. 40 days, 60 days, 20 days. Longest and most recent was about 130 days. Every time i think i am done, i am not. Extremely heavy flow, but not particularly long.

My mom said this didnt happen for her until her mid-60s, so things could be worse.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 31/12/2017 19:38

What do you all use as contraception? I can’t take the combined pill anymore and have just come off Cerazette as I think it was making my hair fall out. No period yet. Don’t want to get the coil so is it back to being a youngster with the condoms again?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 31/12/2017 19:38

IM 44.

Emilizz34 · 31/12/2017 19:39

I’m 53 and have absolutely no symptoms of menopause . I’m full of energy and don’t have many lines but have to dye my hair as lots of grey roots .
I am dreading it as my mother suffered badly with hot flushes and mood swings.

ferntwist · 31/12/2017 19:41

My grandmother was still having her usual periods when she passed away aged 58.

mayhew · 31/12/2017 19:47

57 and no menopause yet. I've had a mirena since I was 45 to control heavy bleeding. Very effective

GinisLife · 31/12/2017 20:18

52 I think. It was a relief in the end as the last 5 years were miserable. Flooding all the time and dreadful migraines. The hot flushes have been bad but not awful. No HRT here

MoreProseccoNow · 31/12/2017 20:25

Nearly 46 & cycles have been getting shorter since my late 30's. Mostly 14-21 days apart ConfusedPeriods definitely heavier & PMT worse in my 40's.

Both my mum, older sister & gran we're all through the menopause by 46'ish.

I started just before my 11th birthday.

NormaNameChange · 31/12/2017 20:32

43 - insomnia, hot flushes, hair loss, flooding, brain fog and hyper emotional. GP prescribed progesterone only pill and oh my gosh, the difference. Still get hot flushes but zero bleeding and can sleep a little but the best bit is I feel like my mind is my own again (mostly) started at 9.

Katedotness1963 · 31/12/2017 20:45

I can't remember when mine started...I'm thinking 12/13. I have PCOS and didn't have a regular, unmedicated period till my mid 40's. Then I started getting them once a month 🙄 They were regular for a few years and then started to get further apart again. I'm 54 now, had a period last month but the one before that was five months previously. I'm not sure what's going on because when I was younger it wasn't unusual to go months without (previous non pregnant record was 7 months)

I assume, given my age I'm going through menopause but the only "symptom" I have is insomnia, and thinning hair.

MistressDeeCee · 31/12/2017 20:45

I'm 54. No periods since June of this year so hoping that's the last. Had hot flushes for 2 years, thats also stopped now. No other menopausal symptoms.

user1495222250 · 31/12/2017 20:53

I was 40 and found to have ovarian cysts. As there was a history of ovarian cancer in my family, I had to have my ovaries removed, along with what was left of my fallopian tubes following my earlier sterilisation.

I went straight in to the menopause with awful hot flushes and it took ages to find a HRT product which suited me, and this was only after an instance of cervical polyps and a very helpful gynaecologist. He said, as I was relatively young, I needed the HRT to help protect my bones from Osteoporosis. I still get the odd hot flush but my main symptom now is awful sweats.

I'm 47 now and would like to stop taking it, but I will heed the doctor's advice.

Scabbersley · 31/12/2017 20:55
  1. Have had about three periods this year. Has terrible brain fog but this has stopped since I've been drinking 2.5 L of water a day and taking menopace.
Busybusybust · 31/12/2017 20:55

Very grateful,

FluffyFerrets · 01/01/2018 00:52

This is something I've been thinking about lately as my own periods are going mental.
I started at 11, I'm now 39. I had really heavy painful periods most of my life. Always every 27/28 days They got slightly better after dc but then went back to being really heavy and painful again around 5 years ago. They also started coming late/early (anywhere from 22 - 29 days) more often early.
They are so so painful. I'm clotting badly, which I never used to, maybe a little bit the odd now and again but not like this. They are lasting longer. PMT symptoms are much worse now, especially my breasts.
My own dm was still going through the menopause when she died at 55 so that's quite a way from my own age.
Last time I had my reproductive hormones checked all was well, no problems. That was 4 years ago.
My guess is I am at or getting very close to the peri menopause.
Initially, I think I will like no periods but I don't know if I will actually miss them or how I'll feel about that being it.

mari652 · 01/01/2018 01:06

Started age 13, finished 54. V heavy periods in years running up ( turned out to have been fibroids :/) so delighted when it was over. No hot flushes, though insomnia. So lovely to not have monthly mood swings/water retention any more !

Passthecake30 · 01/01/2018 08:17

Interesting thread. I'm 43 and my periods have been irregular with occasional flooding ones for a couple of years now. The last 2 had 58 days between them. No other symptoms.
I'm wondering whether I should go to the docs or carry on as is?

swingofthings · 01/01/2018 08:23

Started at 13, regular as a clock until I turned 42 when started to experience the first shorter periods and gradually more and more irregular. At 45, got the first lot of them coming every 2 weeks, then at 46, I had no period for 5 months, then two, then again none for 3 months, then back to every two weeks. Just turned 47 and think I might be back to the no period for months.

The symptoms I have been experiencing for 12 months now have been horrendous. No hot flashes, or even night sweats but it has affected my mood, sleep, anxiety, and the rest and I now have enough of it and despite saying that I would never got on HRT, my life has been so affected, I will now take anything to feel a bit more like myself.

You're only 45 OP, make the best of not being affected yet (and hopefully you'll sail through it).
