Sorry if there's already a thread on this.

I saw they've been released today, and went to have a look. I think they both look lovely! They surprised me a bit though, as they're a bit more intimate than other royal engagement ones.

Disclaimer: I'm a raging royalist Grin

Southysa- I think she’s standing there in a £50000 dress and there’s people going hungry tonight-other than that yeah they look nice

Whether the dress was £50, £500 or £50,000, those people will go hungry. They could have thought more about optics I agree, but no real reason why they shouldn't have done this.

User - I was shocked that her dress cost 50k+. They have so much money

Yes they do (hers she earned and therefore entitled to spend it on what she wishes), more than likely though, it was gifted by the designers, when you are a celeb you get lots of freebies/loans of items. I had never heard of R&R myself. Not my world. But it's alright and I might buy a knock off when it arrives in Primark😁

yrhengi · 22/12/2017 08:59

I think they look very in love, and am glad they're happy, but agree with others about the expensive watch photoshoot look. A see-through ballgown in a park? In December? It smacks of a shoot staged for Vogue or the US news networks rather than the more-formal-yet-somehow-more-natural Will and Kate in a drawing room photos.

And yes, even if she did pay for that £56,000 dress herself, it's a bit of a mis step here - but again, it plays so well to the American dream of a normal girl marrying a prince...

ShowMePotatoSalad · 22/12/2017 09:05

I just can't warm to her

Oh well, I'm sure she'll get over it.

DesignedForLife · 22/12/2017 09:12

Looks like an engagement ring advert. Not my taste but good luck to them.

Julia2016 · 22/12/2017 09:55

If MM was really impacted by what she saw on her humanitarian missions there is no way she would wear such an ostentatious dress. I volunteer for a charity and if I had that money to spare I could not in all conscious spend it on a dress when I know the level of need that's out there. And I am not on the global stage professing my humanitarian virtues. To me this sums her up.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 22/12/2017 09:57

I don't like her, either. She acts like she's doing you a favor by letting you breath the same air as her. However I dont suppose she's particularly in love with me, so. There's no love loss

MiniCooperLover · 22/12/2017 10:19

That dress wasn’t bought, it will have been brought to the shoot by a stylist along with many others and it will have gone back with the stylist later. I think the fact they do charity work doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be allowed to wear nice things every now and then, especially for something as special as engagement pictures. There’s no point them pretending they don’t have money just because others don’t.

BigRoundGlasses · 22/12/2017 10:19

I think the photos are absolutely gorgeous. However, I find it distasteful that the dress is so expensive and I think they have missed a trick in terms of breaking down barriers and connecting with ordinary people (although in other respects they do it well). Something from Next or M&S would have hit the right note GrinHaving said that it is good for the British fashion industry I guess that Meghan and Kate are flying the flag. Also I can't help feeling disappointed that we have yet another Royal woman falling straight into the clothes horse mould. But they can't win whatever they do can they so I will just sit on the fence about the whole thing!

RavingRoo · 22/12/2017 12:31

I paid 3k for my photoshoot and the stylist brought really expensive designer dresses (a couple would have cost me in excess of 10k). The people accusing her of buying dresses on the tax payer are being deliberately obtuse and scapegoating her. Racism is so institutionalized in the UK that apparently blaming the black future member of the royal family who has always worked for the mistakes of the rest (who are white) is considered ‘okay’ - half of the posters here don’t even know they’re racist hence all of these ‘I don’t know why I dislike her so much’. People like you are what got Diana killed.

ElizabethG81 · 22/12/2017 13:10
Hmm
TabbyMack · 22/12/2017 13:48

I think that these two are trying a bit to hard to convince us all that they are "in love". It wouldn't surprise me one iota if he's offered her a job and she's accepted.

TabbyMack · 22/12/2017 13:50

You seem obsessed with the colour of her skin... one else cares. Shame to see such shallow ignorance on MN.

mikado1 · 22/12/2017 14:15

I think the photos are really gorgeous but am a bit Hmm at a third photo being a 'thank you', am I the only one to think 'Get over yourselves'! How grateful people should be to see a photo ffs!! Also, will be confirmed and join the Church obvs completely meaningless- not a good message imo. More Hmm from me!

RavingRoo · 22/12/2017 14:16

@tabby - you don’t even realise you’re being racist. ‘Offered her a job’ - bet you never said that when kate married william. Why else would you feel you have the right to make such a vicious, nasty comment about meghan?

hollyisalovelyname · 22/12/2017 18:58

They look like she's in a Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren ad.
He's not good looking / pretty boy enough to be the male model in it though.
She's gazing at him adoringly- vom.
It doesn't seem sincere.
I haven't seen Suits.
I think she is really pretty but the pictures look so staged. Not natural.
I really hope Harry will be happy.
He was just a little boy when his beloved Mum died. He deserves happiness.

shhhfastasleep · 22/12/2017 19:42

My god, shock news - couple look a bit forced in official photo. Off with their heads.

Meowstro · 22/12/2017 20:09

They remind me of a very suave photoshoot for a suit company. I really hope they make each other happy.

gotthemoononastick · 22/12/2017 20:33

Did a double take! is she sitting on a tractor tyre ?

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 22/12/2017 20:35

I love the pictures. I think even the most hardened anti-Royal would struggle to hate Harry. I watched the Diana 20 years on documentary and him and William come across as lovely down to earth sweet boys

dayswithaY · 22/12/2017 20:57

I like Meghan, I really hope they are happy and the marriage lasts. Can't help thinking she's shot herself in the foot with the ridiculous dress though. It's gorgeous but I think she's been badly advised or not advised at all - a £50k ballgown in a park in December! These are official engagement photos not the TOWIE Christmas Special. He looks embarrassed and awkward. I get that she wants to do things her way and not conform - I'm all for that but she will find the British public have a low tolerance for ostentatious displays. There is a whiff of insincerity about these photos even though I believe they are in love, I hope she doesn't get stifled by all the tedious protocol and boring endless summers at Balmoral and hope he doesn't get his heart broken. If we are lucky they could be an amazing partnership but she needs to get real and drop the Hollywood fakery.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 22/12/2017 21:04

Maybe she paid for the dress herself considering she's a pretty successful actress in her own right.

Hardly gonna rock up in a £13 Primark offering is she.

honeyroar · 22/12/2017 21:09

Hmm not sure. The first one does look like an engagement ring advert. I didn't mind the second one until someone mentioned the elbow- now I can't stop looking at it either!

She looks like she's playing a part and he looks like he's "trying to be normal". He looks totally smitten, she always seems very calculated in how she's playing it.

dayswithaY · 22/12/2017 21:10

It's the over the top style of the dress that's cringeworthy not the price.

Killdora · 22/12/2017 22:38

I think that they look like two rich, media savvy people who are posing for photos that they want published for everyone to see.

If Diana and Charles were ‘displaying’ their relationship in this day and age where Instagram and ‘the image’ is King then they wouldn’t look that different to these.

As a distraction from granny’s creative tax schemes for the masses of unwashed they aren’t bad.

KenAdams · 22/12/2017 23:22

Ah, Mumsnetters. Feminists one minute then in the same breath saying a woman can't buy what she wants to with money she has earned or style her hair as she wishes. Way to go!
