AIBU not to understand why girls get their tongue pierced

Can someone persuade me why anyone would want to do this? It is really painful I am told and then you have a piece of metal in your mouth all day every day. It's hardly jewellery either as almost no one can see it.

ButchRestingFace That's like saying if you have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro you must already have climbed Mount Everest. They are just two different questions. And no, I have no idea why men do it but a) I am not as interested to learn the answer and b) I didn't think that would be a great question for MN.

I don’t have one but yes, oral sex feels... different (I won’t say ‘better’ because that depends on the person, and not just a piercing).

Because some people like how it looks. Or for sexual reasons. Or both Wink

I wouldn't have it done as it sounds incredibly painful and it is SO irritating talking to people who have them done - the "clack" all the time.

And in all honesty they are tacky and common. Who wants to look at a piercing you've licked your boyfriends dick with. And they chip the enamel off your teeth

What's the difference between looking at someone's unpierced mouth then? Presumably people will have "licked their boyfriends dick" who don't have a piercing.

Unless you're suggesting it's some sort of secret sign to indicate who does give oral sex?

"Clacking" and teeth damage depends on placement. I've suffered neither. Nor do I talk any differently

I got mine done because I liked how it looked. It didn't hurt and healed really easily.

I have no damage to my teeth (confirmed by my dentist) and do not talk funny or "clack".

I still love it 20 years later.

I got my tongue pierced as a teenager 15 years ago, because I liked the look of it. I still have it now and still love it. My teeth are perfect, it doesn't impact my speech. there's no "clacking" and while I have sometimes been told it adds something to both kissing and oral sex, that wasn't the reason I got it.

The only downside I've experienced so far is I once accidentally swallowed the whole bar after the ball came loose. Oops.

I've had mine done for 10 years, can't remember why I had it done but I wouldn't be without it now. It hurt a little bit but less than my bellybutton piercing and slightly more than my eyebrow and lip piercing.

I used to have it done, i got it done because i thought it looked cool and alternative and although i didnt have the sexual aspect in mind at the time, i must say it did come in handy.

It is painful you cannot eat properly for days and it gave me bad breath but I was 18 when I got it and thought it looked cool
I want my nipples pierced though I like the look of it

BadFeminist I think you misread my post. I asked people to persuade me. I didn't suggest that people who have piercings are persuaded into it.

You don't need to "get" it you just want to equate it with sex. 1st to use the "blow job" term I see. Not having a piercing hasn't taken your mind out of the muck, has it?

We've already had the why do women wear makeup/short dress/ageist threads from the sour of mind. I suppose next week it'll be why do women wear red shoes. Or do their hair a certain way. Whatever.

It goes from "girls" to "anyone".

I have no idea why "girls" would want to get a tongue piercing. But I imagine for similar reasons to adult women, or men.

ButchyRestingFace It still makes sense to me now Smile. It is true I said girls as I had people at school in mind really but the question expanded from there. I am not sure if it's true that girls, adult women and men all pierce their tongues for the same reason but you may be right.

MistressDeeCee I did use the word blowjob but I certainly wasn't the first or only person in the thread to suggest it was for better oral sex. A fair proportion of the posters took that view as one of the motivations.
