Hi all, this is my first AIBU but I'm having a panic.
Non vegan mates over this eve, they always make every effort to accommodate us when we go there but this is their first visit to ours since we are vegan.
Shall I suck it up and cook a corpse or stick with a vegan menu? Would you be offended to eat vegan at a friends as a meat eater?
Thanks in advance if you reply. Could do with a few views...

Yes If I went to a Vegan or Vegitarian household, I would expect vegitarian or vegan food.

ExcitementBubble · 15/12/2017 16:27

More importantly NON-DAIRY BAILEYS!!! Tell me where to get that? I have been dairy-free for 2 years and I miss Baileys so much.

"Because us carnivores eat meat at every meal, and simply can't imagine food without a piece of animal in it."

Well the way many people talk you would think that......

Thedietstartsnow · 15/12/2017 16:29

We are all vegan....if we had gone to someone's house and been made a lovely vegan dinner ,I would indeed make them a meat one in return...however I would cheat and buy something ready cooked meat wise and just add the extras as homemade..if you understand me only because I would worry I had not cooked it properly,as I've never cooked meat.

Although I wouldn't mind if the food was tasty, my OH would find a vegan evening meal too much. He thinks meat is a proper part of a meal. Also, he's tall and eats a lot of calories, and as the evening meal is our main meal of the day, he would complain at being hungry after a plate of vegetables. If I were to host a vegan, I'd cook meat and make a special plate of something for the vegan guest. I would think it thoughtful if vegan-friend returned the favour at her house. For example, how hard is it to put a lump of roasted beef on a plate (you can pick up roasted meats at the delicatessen)? Or at the very least, some cheese. I have vegans in the family and for them, veganism isn't a point of principle. They've essentially jumped on the health bandwagon. Just saying, to balance the debate.

I'd look forward to some vegan food. Indian takeaway near me does the most amazing food, puts all the others to shame

SkyIsTooHigh · 15/12/2017 16:30

Totally what bearsdontdig said.

These are friends who have catered vegan for OP multiple times in the past. They are not going to throw up their hands at the revelation that vegan food is not just lettuce and lentils.

OP just cater generously. I tend to include plenty of cheese, pastry or something "meaty" like mushrooms or aubergine when catering veggie, to help fill up people who are used to a lot of meat. Obv cheese is not an option.

A new vegan Baileys is being launched- company is looking for taste testers:

ExcitementBubble I have some. I bought it at a vegan festival in Sheffield recently.

Besos de Oro is made from brandy and horchata. Cream gives me the runs, but this doesn't. It is delicious.

Enidblyton1 · 15/12/2017 16:32

What did you end up cooking? Would love to know as I need some inspiration for when vegan friends come round for dinner!

LoniceraJaponica · 15/12/2017 16:35

For Christmas dinner I am making a shallot and chestnut tart tatin and serving it with all the traditional accompaniments. You could try something like this.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 15/12/2017 16:36

I love eating corpses, but I also love eating vegan or vegetarian food and wouldn't be offended to go round a friends house and have a lovely meal they'd prepared, whatever it did or didn't contain.

Branleuse · 15/12/2017 16:37

i would expect a vegan meal

Sashkin · 15/12/2017 16:38

I once had a job in a pub, and one day was put on bbq duty. I am vegetarian, and had never cooked meat before.

I was swiftly pulled off bbq duty when people complained that their chicken legs were pink on the inside. I didn’t know that you couldn’t serve chicken rare Blush

I wouldn’t cook meat if I were you. I doubt you have much idea what you’re doing with meat either, and a dinner party is not the place to practise.

Dancinggoat · 15/12/2017 16:38

That's ridiculous. Meat eaters don't have meat with every meal ! !
Meat eaters do eat non meat dishes too.
As you are probably aware

NewNameWhoDis · 15/12/2017 16:39

This thread is funnier than it's supposed to be.

I'd love to have a vegan meal made for me and I'm a meat eater. I'd just like to see how great food can be without meat and would be really disappointed if I rocked up at yours and you'd reanimated a corpse cooked chicken.

Post pics please, I'd like to see the outcome.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 15/12/2017 16:39

Cook a lovely vegan meal and lashings of wine 🍷 Grin

Mustang27 · 15/12/2017 16:41

Nope cook what you want to eat unless they have an allergy it won't kill them to go meat free for a night

Originalfoogirl · 15/12/2017 16:42

I’m a meat eater. Would you expect a vegan meal if you came to my house?

hedlesschicken · 15/12/2017 16:42

I wouldn't be offended by vegan food. I fact I would quite like it! 😀

Mustang27 · 15/12/2017 16:43

Oh thia green curry with just veg is delicious as long as it's all nice a crunchy and fresh mmmmm Can I come too

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 15/12/2017 16:43

I'd really prefer it if you didn't cook me a meal with meat in it, as (no disrespect) you most probably won't cook meat particularly well.
I'd rather have something vegan and tasy

VeganCow · 15/12/2017 16:44

Cook vegan, loads of dishes are 'accidentally vegan' just because they are vegetable based but happen to be dairy free too.

Lots of non vegetarian/vegan people choose the vegetable option in restaurants simply because they dont fancy meat or fish that day, some just because they love vegetables cooked well and inventively.

I am vegan btw and wouldnt cook meat or fish if I had guests, I dont think I would be expected to?

VeganCow · 15/12/2017 16:47

Chrys2017 Ive had my eye on thet Ottonenghi recipe for a while, will give it a go. I do my tofu in the actifry, it does all the work for you, so will do that here.

VeganCow · 15/12/2017 16:50

Originalfoogirl the difference here is you don't eat meat at EVERY meal you eat, and am sure you enjoy vegetable, pules, beans, etc as well as meat dishes? I would cook you something non meat, but something you do like. Vegans ALWAYS eat vegan and thats the difference.
