Hi all, this is my first AIBU but I'm having a panic.
Non vegan mates over this eve, they always make every effort to accommodate us when we go there but this is their first visit to ours since we are vegan.
Shall I suck it up and cook a corpse or stick with a vegan menu? Would you be offended to eat vegan at a friends as a meat eater?
Thanks in advance if you reply. Could do with a few views...

I would no more expect a vegan to cook meat for me than I would a muslim to supply me with wine.

Yanbu and any decent friend wouldn't complain or be put out (or even expect anything else I think)

mrsmayitstimetogo · 15/12/2017 14:03

well, I LOVE the 'cook a corpse' joke! i'm sure you weren't going to say this to your friends...

Of course, just cook your very nicest food.

Flamingoingmad · 15/12/2017 14:05

I would expect Vegan and wouldn't mind.

Both DP & I are meat eaters, but will happily choose vegetarian/vegan for a change sometimes.

The only thing that occasionally lets vegan/vegetarian food down can be textures being too similar, but I am a bit sensitive to textures so that could just be me.

twiney · 15/12/2017 14:05

Going around to yours I would expect vegan, but I do think its generally a bit weird that is the way it works.

I have a lovely friend who has been a hardcore vegan since childhood and loves to cook for people - she makes meat dishes for meat eating guests, presumably because she realises her own diet is her own choice not anyone elses.

I guess think of it this way - if you were on a hardcore weight loss diet, would you invite people over for dinner and cook them a weight loss meal? Theres no right or wrong answer; but that should dictate what you do. Personally I wouldnt.

newmumwithquestions · 15/12/2017 14:06

Definitely cook vegan.

Am with the others on the corpse comment though.

WellAlwaysHaveParis · 15/12/2017 14:06

Cook a corpse Confused how nicely put OP!

JustDanceAddict · 15/12/2017 14:06

I’d cook vegan. I was veggie for years and never had meat in the house.

Natsku · 15/12/2017 14:06

I'd expect a vegan meal if I went to vegan friends' home for dinner, it's perfectly fine and acceptable to cook vegan in your own home! Just er... don't talk about corpses.

SilverySurfer · 15/12/2017 14:06

I'm the fussiest eater ever but would not expect a vegan to cook me meat and two veg.

I would probably eat before arriving as I doubt I would find any vegan meal edible. Before anyone tells me how ridiculous I am to be so fussy - I know but I'm too old to change now. My excuse is it's probably hereditary, my dear old Dad was the fussiest eater ever.

Thanks for replies and reassurance guys, I will do vegan. There is always lots of wine, it's as essential as water 😁 thinking thai green veg curry with jasmine rice. Simple and hearty?! It's a casual meal rather than a dinner party.
Sorry for my choice of words, I didn't mean to offend (I'm actually not a lecturing vegan and would never comment on anyone eating meat ever) It was said out of panic of having to buy and cook meat, i just typed what I was thinking but will choose my words more carefully.

I'm a vegetarian and I'd never cook meat for friends. I even make my friends join Mr at a vegetarian restaurant for my birthday Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 15/12/2017 14:10

I love thai veg curry and don't even think of it as vegan, we're omnivores and often have it.

cakedup · 15/12/2017 14:10

I'm vegan and no way in the world would I ever cook meat for anyone. In fact, I find guests are always intrigued as to what I will cook and are pleasantly surprised by the results.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 15/12/2017 14:10

I’m sure they’re fully versed in your vegan beliefs about cooked corpse and such.and won’t expect a cooked corpse.
I’m vegetarian have been years since school and quite frankly its folk like you banging on about cooked corpse that give impression vegans/vegetarians are difficult

FFS she apologised for her choice of words. Read the thread.

Nanny0gg · 15/12/2017 14:12

As it's a moral/ethical choice I wouldn't expect you to cook meat. I also wouldn't expect you to eat meat in my house.

neonpink · 15/12/2017 14:13

of course cook vegan! they may be pleasantly surprised at how good it can be.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 15/12/2017 14:13

No ffs,it was poor choice of words and I see she apologised

reluctantbrit · 15/12/2017 14:13

I wouldn't expect non-vegan food in your house and def not you cooking meat for me.

But I would be a bit disappointed if you would serve me vegan sausages or other meat substitutes. I find them awful and you are in the position to shine with proper veggies,

But make sure you cook something your guest will eat. For example I hate mushrooms and we told our vegetarian friend before her cooking for us and she was glad about it.

AnachronisticCorpse · 15/12/2017 14:13

Are you VEGAN? I imagine your friends have no idea you’re VEGAN because you probably never mention being a VEGAN in real life.

Just cook whatever. Us raging carnivores don’t really give a shit, it’s not like we need meat with every meal including breakfast, despite what the VEGANS think.

Well I hope you're making sure they bring wine without any fining agents, particularly isinglass

Chrys2017 · 15/12/2017 14:15

Vegan meal definitely. A vegan friend made this for me once and it's become one of my favourite recipes—and I'm normally someone who retches at the mere mention of tofu!

NotMyMonkees · 15/12/2017 14:17

I'd expect and enjoy a vegan meal. I also am not remotely bothered by the "cook a corpse" comment... People are aware that's what meat is, right? Don't like it, don't eat it! (yes I'm a meat eater)
Have a fab evening, keep the vegan wine flowing!
