We are a vegan house, meat eater friends over this evening. WIBU to cook a vegan menu?

Hi all, this is my first AIBU but I'm having a panic.
Non vegan mates over this eve, they always make every effort to accommodate us when we go there but this is their first visit to ours since we are vegan.
Shall I suck it up and cook a corpse or stick with a vegan menu? Would you be offended to eat vegan at a friends as a meat eater?
Thanks in advance if you reply. Could do with a few views...

@jcsp

Most meat eaters quite like something different.

Some of even eat a lot of vegetarian/vegan food and enjoy it! We can even manage without meat at every meal.

To the OP - YANBU to serve vegan food. I would never expect a vegetarian or vegan to prepare meat etc.

TenancyTroublesAgain · 15/12/2017 15:32

You don't deserve replies purely because of "cook a corpse".

ShotsFired · 15/12/2017 15:36

I would expect to be cooked a meal by my host and I wouldn't be fretting over the 'status' of it.

By announcing that it a VEGAN meal you are making it a VEGAN thing when it really has no need to be. It is not a thing, it is just a meal in your repertoire that you think your friends will like that you have cooked for them.

Stop setting yourself apart as if you are abnormal or otherwise "outside" normal eating.

Enwi · 15/12/2017 15:39

Grin at all these people complaining about you calling a corpse a corpse.
Surely no one would expect you to cook meat unless there was a medical reason they needed it. I very often cook for meat eaters and some offer to bring meat to accompany their meal, which they are more than welcome to do but I never cook non-vegan things for them. It goes against my beliefs and honestly I enjoy surprising people with how delicious good vegan food isSmile

CharlieSierra · 15/12/2017 15:40

I thought the 'cook a corpse' was just a joke? Is joking not ok?

Enwi · 15/12/2017 15:40

Oh and also I think I’d probably poison everyone if I tried to cook meat. I’ve cooked for myself the last 10 years but have also been veggie that entire time so wouldn’t even know where to start.

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 15/12/2017 15:47

It was meant to be lighthearted. I know I don’t always come across that way and I am brutal ( both on mn and irl).
Apology accepted and just cook your guests a nice meal.

Ps. I’m a meat eater but I love experimenting with vegan and veggie food so I know you can create some fab food.

LoniceraJaponica · 15/12/2017 15:47

“If I had gone to the trouble of making you a meal to conform with your eating preferences I would expect you to return the favour. If you served me vegan food I would not come again to you for food - but we could still be friends”

So, in a similar vein you would expect a Jew or Muslim to serve you pork Seniorcitizen? Hmm
I have never met a vegan who isn’t vegan for moral or ethical reasons, so it would be totally unrealistic to expect them to cook meat for you. And given that they don’t eat meat they might not make a decent job of cooking it. You are just being silly.

“But I would be a bit disappointed if you would serve me vegan sausages or other meat substitutes. I find them awful and you are in the position to shine with proper veggies,”

I agree with this ^^. There are so many delicious and creative vegan recipes around these days. We are a household of omnivores and a vegetarian and often eat vegan food.

“Ottolenghi has recipes that I'd choose over meat any day and I'm not veggie.”

He is brilliant isn’t he. We did an Ottolenghi main course for Christmas dinner last year

A thai creen curry contains shrimp paste and fish sauce surely?

FucksakeCuntingFuckingTwats · 15/12/2017 15:50

Wouldn't bother me at all and infact I would expect it. Certainely wouldn't be expecting meat

LoniceraJaponica · 15/12/2017 15:51

"A thai creen curry contains shrimp paste and fish sauce surely?"

Yes. I am assuming the OP would maker her own curry paste.

IsaSchmisa · 15/12/2017 15:54

Can't see issue. Thai green curry is pretty mainstream these days.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 15/12/2017 15:58

I'd expect Vegan and tbh I would look forward to it. Cook vegan and make something delicious.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 15/12/2017 16:00

YANBU to cook vegan. YABU in your corpse comment. But I think you know that now. Xmas Grin

BlazingPaddles · 15/12/2017 16:01

Wouldn't occur to me in a month of Sundays that a vegan would even consider cooking meat for a guest.

LoniceraJaponica · 15/12/2017 16:02

This isn't a proper AIBU. We are all being far too reasonable Grin

BearsDontDigOnDancing · 15/12/2017 16:03

Just cook vegan. They will expect it.

But all this chat about "cook vegan, the meat eaters might be oh so SURPRISED by how delicious it could be" theme going through the thread is hilarious.

I eat meat, but I do not eat it for every meal, I will not be surprised by just how "delicious" a non meat meal might be. I will not be "looking forward" to a non meat meal. I will be looking forward to a meal I do not have to cook. All this "show off your skills" (not you op) is a bit much. Food is ruddy food. I cook meat, I have cooked vegetarian, I have even cooked vegan recipes if we fancy the look of them. I do not need to go to a vegan household to be surprised and amazed at how delicious food can be without a ruddy steak on it.

BlazingPaddles · 15/12/2017 16:03

I love good chomp on a corpse but I can just about manage if I don't eat meat with every meal! Wink

DeliveredByKiki · 15/12/2017 16:04

I'm the only vegan in my household so I cook meat occasionally for the family but I like to try out more fancy vegan cooking when friends come over - some very dear and sweet friends know they've been guinea pigs occasionally and we've had some pretty sub par meals but now my cooking is up to scratch again and it's nice to have an excuse to experiment.

Having said that sometimes DH will smoke some fish or chicken on the side which is fine, and when we go to friends' houses I always offer to bring my own or whatever but generally I think friends are respectful of each others' choices and enjoy opportunities to eat something they otherwise wouldn't. So I don't tend to do curries or risotto, which they probably have vegan without knowing it regularly, but try to show vegan food can be exciting and interesting (while still simple enough for me to cook!)

DeliveredByKiki · 15/12/2017 16:05

meant to add my main reason for wanting to do slightly more fancy vegan food is because day to day I get bored with eating the same old stuff and accommodating our family's various likes and dislikes so it's nice not to have to just douse everything in pesto so everyone will eat it

BertrandRussell · 15/12/2017 16:06

No of course not. But I'm sure that there have been posters saying that they wouldn't come to your house if you don't cook them meat. They are very silly.

speakout · 15/12/2017 16:10

(But all this chat about "cook vegan, the meat eaters might be oh so SURPRISED by how delicious it could be" theme going through the thread is hilarious.*

Bears I agree.

Because us carnivores eat meat at every meal, and simply can't imagine food without a piece of animal in it.

I eat meat once every two weeks or so, I don't eat dairy, so most of my food is vegan.
But I am not a vegan .

expatinscotland · 15/12/2017 16:12

Of course, cook vegan! We're meat-eaters but I have a dear vegan friend I enjoy cooking for and always cook her vegan meals and if we're in mixed company I make sure her food has not come into contact with animal products. If I'm invited to hers I expect a vegan meal.

JoJoSM2 · 15/12/2017 16:18

Only read the first and last page but it's easy to serve meat eaters some meat without handling meat (I'd find it gross personally). You can get ready made nibbles with to stick in the oven.

festivedinosaur · 15/12/2017 16:23

I have vegan friends.

When they come to me I make sure I provide vegan food and drinks

When I go to them I expect vegan food

I do not expect them to start talking about their hatred of meat or cooking of corpses whilst in their presence
