To think flushing food down the toilet is disguisting?

I was staying with my in laws last week. They had cooked a big pot of curry and had some leftovers in the pot that they wished to dispose of. So FIL marched upstairs with his large pot in hand, straight in to the toilet, scooped the contents down the toilet and flushed.

I genuinely found it repulsive. AIBU?

Is he trying to make his own fatberg? Yuk.

What about it repulsed you?

The whole fatberg thing as that came to mind quite quickly. Also, hovering the pot over the same toilet that he would have flushed his urine etc down that very same day. Just the whole idea made me want to vom 🤢

I've known families who do this and I too find it all kinds of wrong. And aren't you just asking for blockages??

The only things that should go down a toilet are the contents of your bladder and bowel (and maybe your stomach) and toilet paper.

Nothing else at all.

Why didn't he put it in a box for the fridge or freezer and eat it later. I agree I'd be appalled at the waste of food

Well poo is processed food so not much difference really, but chucking curry straight in the toilet is a bit grim yes

I tip food down the loo. Stuff that's too sloppy for the bin and to lumpy for the sink - cereal dregs and so on.

I don’t do it myself as I wouldn’t want my pots that close to the loo. But I don’t see any real difference between that and poo.

My OH does this and it drives me crazy. Why not just put the offending item in a plastic bag then put it in the bin? The trash will probably be going out in a couple days anyway.

Fatbergs are totally different. Putting uneaten food down the loo is a shocking waste though. Put it in containers and freeze it. Or take it, still warm, to rough sleepers.

It is vile, but those of us with access to outside space like a garden have the luxury or privilege that those in flats don't and we can dispose of that compostable old foods or nip out to the bins.

...the thing is, wouldn't it have been just as easy for him to nip out to the bio bin ? it is yucky.

Did he wash up the pot in the bathroom or in the kitchen? The mind boggles

Well some of it was going to end up there in 24 hours anyway....

My parents did this with old food - sloppy plate scrapings etc. But we lived on the 4th floor in an old block of flats and it was much easier than risking it dripping out the bottom of a bin bag which you needed to carry all the way down the carpeted flights of stairs. This was 25 years ago and before food recycling etc.

If you don’t see any difference between food and poo, why would you not put your pot near the toilet?

Food comes out our bodies once it’s been digested and processed. I would imagine cooking with oils and such and then tipping that food in and flushing would be far more likely to cause fatbergs.

Do people actually do that? What's wrong with the bin? Compost heap? Freezer etc?

The drains will get clogged up with fat

Worst I heard was people flushing disposable nappies and blocking the main drain.

That's a expensive repair

God, I"ve never heard of this before. It does sound absolutely horrible.

I've lived in apartments before with no garden. It wouldn't have crossed my mind to flush away food. I've not idea why it's so repellent, but the picture it conjures up makes me feel a bit sick.

Agree that the waste of food is the worst bit. Why do some people refuse to eat leftovers? Unbelievable waste.

Its not something id do. I hate food waste and also the hygiene issues involved.

Having said that ,material and grey water that goes down your sink,your loo, from your dishwater,your washing machine etc all end up in the foul water drain.

Most local authorities have food waste bin collections which is then fermented to make bio gas.

A leaflet from my water company that comes with the bill says not to do this. Poo and vomit are digested or partially digested, uncooked food will cause blockages.

LOL @ the assumption that everyone has bio bins.

My friend does this and half the time doesn’t flush it properly, so when you go in it looks like someone has been ill in there. It’s revolting. She uses a lot of fat in her cooking & I’ve mentioned that it’s probably not very good for the sewage system, but she says ‘it’s fine’. What more can you say really?

...and yes, the idea of pots & pans over the toilet makes me heave.

I always put the water and leftover egg whites from poachd eggs down the toilet. It's something my mum has always done and I kind of just presumed most people did?

Why would you do this?

And why would you not put leftovers in the fridge?
