To tell fibs for a soup recipe

Last week I was out for my works Xmas lunch. Overall the lunch was pretty decent, but the starter, lentil soup, was out of this world. It was the most amazing soup I've ever tasted! Seriously I almost cried.

The past week I've thought about the soup every night, thinking of how i can get my hands on the recipe.

If I simply phone the restaurant and say OMG your soup was amazing please give me the recipe I'm certain they'll say no.

Is it wrong to say I had a funny reaction to the soup please give me a list of all the ingredients (preferably with quanititesGrin)?

Or could I say I'm coming to your restaurant and I have funny allergies what's in your lentil soup exactly?

Help I need this recipe! The restaurant is a long drive from my work and home so DH will be like I'm not driving ☓ miles for a bowl of soup.

If I don't get this recipe I will regret it forever. Santa if you're up there i take back my request for Dreamgirls tickets please can you get me this recipe!

Ask them if they would be prepared to do you a large amount as a takeout. Lie and tell them you are having a dinner party and want to pass it off as your own...then ask them for the ingredients so that’s you don’t look like a fool if asked for the recipe lol 😂

Toast3 · 13/12/2017 17:33

Oops I should have read the full thread first. I now see that you have already emailed them...good luck 👍

GlitteryFluff · 13/12/2017 17:34

I need to find out if you get the recipe!

purplecorkheart · 13/12/2017 17:36

Give them a few days to reply. The chef who made it may not be working today and also it is their busy time of the year so they may not have the time to type up the recipe for a few days

BarbaraofSevillle · 13/12/2017 18:26

Generally speaking the difference in restaurants is stock and a shit load of butter

^^ This, and more salt than any home cook would usually dare add.

The Covent Garden soup company books are pretty good for soup recipes.

SteelyPip · 13/12/2017 18:28

I think we should all email the hotel and direct them to this thread. They'd be so flattered they'd be sure to reply and offer OP a free bowl no doubt!

SteelyPip · 13/12/2017 18:29

In fact maybe they'd offer us ALL a bowl - being the season of goodwill 'n all! Xmas Grin

Rachie1986 · 13/12/2017 18:30

Blatent place mark to find out if you get the recipe!

Donnerkebabbler · 13/12/2017 18:31

What if it was from a carton and they’re hastily googling lentil soup recipes to send to OP? Grin

Claireshh · 13/12/2017 18:39

I make a pretty good lentil soup.

Half a mug of dried peas
Mugful of red lentils
1-2 leeks sliced (I use food processor)
4/5 carrots (grated in food processor)
Pack of cooked ham hock from Waitrose
A ham stock cub
A chicken stock pot thing

Check everything in a pot at the same time. The stock should just be slightly higher than the veg. Add pepper and a little celery salt, Simmer for 20/30 minutes. Blitz with a hand blender. Check seasoning. Stir through a large handful of chopped parsley.

crackerjacket · 13/12/2017 19:02

Why haven't they emailed back yet?

(too busy eating delicious soup, obv)

StuffAndNonsenseYes · 13/12/2017 19:15

Placemarking for lentilly goodness Xmas Grin

Borntobeamum · 13/12/2017 19:23

My brother has a cafe and makes a different soup daily. Every one is slightly different depending on what ingredients he has. ie a veg soup one day may have different ingredients to the next time he makes it.
Why not just have a go!

Robyrollover · 13/12/2017 19:23

Love a decent bowl of soup

no not placemarking not me

TheImprobableGirl · 13/12/2017 19:25

It’ll make the daily mail soon one woman and her quest for lentil soup

Gazelda · 13/12/2017 19:35

I've never tried Lentil Soup. But I've just realised that I need some right now!

MrsPestilence · 13/12/2017 19:51

We have lentil and pumpkin soup in the fridge, tis lush (and rather orange).

Last week's lentil soup was a bit green, used turnips and swiss chard stems plus a bit of the green.

Caken · 13/12/2017 20:12

I need this recipe dammit! Love a good lentil soup 😋

trixymalixy · 13/12/2017 20:17

I love lentil soup. It's my favourite.

My friend made the most delicious lentil, sweet potato and spinach soup once. There was no recipe as she just made it up as she went along. I have tried to recreate it so many times to no avail. Sad

BarbaraofSevillle · 13/12/2017 20:31

Not the hotel recipe as this one is orange not green, but from the Covent Garden soup book:

2 onions
250g carrots
165g red lentils
3 pints ham or veg stock (as prev mentioned Marigold powder makes excellent soup)
Pepper

Simmer all the above together for 30 mins until veg v soft. Blend and chuck in some parsley and salt to taste.

addler · 13/12/2017 23:03

That's it, they've swallowed OP up. No one is allowed to know the secret soup recipe! Shock

TooSarcastic · 13/12/2017 23:34

Turns out that I'm overly invested in this recipe, too.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/12/2017 23:38

you realise that if they do reply you are going to spend days pming people!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 14/12/2017 00:30

I’ve read three pages hoping for a happy ending. Any news yet?!

Alwaysinmyheart · 14/12/2017 00:38

Soup! I need soup! 😀😀😀
