To tell fibs for a soup recipe

Last week I was out for my works Xmas lunch. Overall the lunch was pretty decent, but the starter, lentil soup, was out of this world. It was the most amazing soup I've ever tasted! Seriously I almost cried.

The past week I've thought about the soup every night, thinking of how i can get my hands on the recipe.

If I simply phone the restaurant and say OMG your soup was amazing please give me the recipe I'm certain they'll say no.

Is it wrong to say I had a funny reaction to the soup please give me a list of all the ingredients (preferably with quanititesGrin)?

Or could I say I'm coming to your restaurant and I have funny allergies what's in your lentil soup exactly?

Help I need this recipe! The restaurant is a long drive from my work and home so DH will be like I'm not driving ☓ miles for a bowl of soup.

If I don't get this recipe I will regret it forever. Santa if you're up there i take back my request for Dreamgirls tickets please can you get me this recipe!

I emailed a cafe once to ask for the recipe of one of their dishes. They were very flattered and gave me the recipe on the condition I wrote a positive review on TripAdvisor, which I did.

Janetjanetjanet · 13/12/2017 13:09

Ooh, a live lentil soup thread!

Betcha it was the stock that made it.

Janetjanetjanet · 13/12/2017 13:11

My mum makes an amazing soup of out boiled gammon stock too.

Just throws in lentils, carrot, onion, boils it then blends it.

Then serves it with croutons that have been fried in bacon fat.

Nom.

ihatethecold · 13/12/2017 13:14

Im living off soup at the mo due to doing WW.
Just made a lovely chickpea and tomato soup but I’d love the lentil recipe.

Janetjanetjanet · 13/12/2017 13:17

Nice username BTW op Grin

BlackPeppercorn · 13/12/2017 13:17

Rocksalt in Folkestone have a soup in this league. Mushroom, with a tarragon dumpling (and they can do the dumpling gluten free!). It's blimming amazing.
You may have inspired me to pluck up the courage to email them.

Fellia · 13/12/2017 13:22

I really want to know now too!

Hissy · 13/12/2017 13:28

I do have a cracking yellow lentil soup recipe..

but I will wait here for the green one :D

Slaylormoon · 13/12/2017 13:29

excited for potential soup recipe!

TossDaily · 13/12/2017 13:32

Not placemarking for a lentil soup recipe at all.

MrsPestilence · 13/12/2017 13:33

I'm suspecting some MSG in the stock. That said, lentil soup is a food of the gods.

Loonoonow · 13/12/2017 13:33

Watching for soup recipe.

LagunaBubbles · 13/12/2017 13:36

I make fab lentil soup, my Mums old recipe, its just very simple and very tasty, she used loads of grated carrots.

MissOrganisedMe · 13/12/2017 13:37

Love, love, love a good lentil soup! My DH makes a great one. Mine, on the other hand, is always shit. Not sure how as it's pretty basic and I have followed his recipe to the letter before too. I hope you get it OP, if only for me to surpass him in making lentil soup!

maddiemookins16mum · 13/12/2017 13:39

My 'secret' to a decent lentil soup is one of those really cheap packs of cooking bacon.

Viviennemary · 13/12/2017 13:41

It's a gamble whether they give you the recipe or not. Interesting it was greenish in colour. My Mum used to make lentil soup. Sometimes green sometimes more orangey. Green = no carrots. Orangey with carrots. I preferred the green. Took me ages to figure out the obvious!

Hulder · 13/12/2017 13:41

Generally speaking the difference in restaurants is stock and a shit load of butter.

Biddie191 · 13/12/2017 13:46

Well? Have they replied yet?

Giraffey1 · 13/12/2017 13:49

Just ask. What’s the worst that can happen? They say no ... but more likely they’ll be flattered though, and unless it’s their super secret speciality they’ll probably be glad to share the recipe.

DPotter · 13/12/2017 13:49

Bit unfair to expect a detailed reply from a chef during lunchtime service..................

MrsFrisbyMouse · 13/12/2017 13:52

I just made soup because of this thread.

Mexican Tomato and Bean Soup

It's yummy...

I didn't use chilli, didn't add fresh or roast tomatoes. But did use chipolote paste (for a smokey flavour) and tinned tomatoes.

I'm going to serve it with tortilla chips and sour cream.

amusedbush · 13/12/2017 13:53

The only good thing that came out of a disastrous flat share with the world's most inconsiderate flat mate was his dad's lentil soup recipe. It's bloody delicious every time and I go through phases where I make massive pans of it and eat it for lunch every day for a month Grin

QueenThisTime · 13/12/2017 13:55
:o

It does sound amazing, I love lentilly things. Some restaurants do have their own cookbooks, so it's not unheard of for them to share recipes. Good luck!

PositivelyPERF · 13/12/2017 13:59

Oh, OP! You've given me the courage to ask for the recipe for a wonderful vegtable curry I had in Home Restaurant, in Belfast. My mouth is watering. They also had the most amazing sorbet I've ever tasted in my life. If I worked there id eat my wages worth of veg curry and sorbet. Drool. 😛
