To tell fibs for a soup recipe

Last week I was out for my works Xmas lunch. Overall the lunch was pretty decent, but the starter, lentil soup, was out of this world. It was the most amazing soup I've ever tasted! Seriously I almost cried.

The past week I've thought about the soup every night, thinking of how i can get my hands on the recipe.

If I simply phone the restaurant and say OMG your soup was amazing please give me the recipe I'm certain they'll say no.

Is it wrong to say I had a funny reaction to the soup please give me a list of all the ingredients (preferably with quanititesGrin)?

Or could I say I'm coming to your restaurant and I have funny allergies what's in your lentil soup exactly?

Help I need this recipe! The restaurant is a long drive from my work and home so DH will be like I'm not driving ☓ miles for a bowl of soup.

If I don't get this recipe I will regret it forever. Santa if you're up there i take back my request for Dreamgirls tickets please can you get me this recipe!

Now I want lentil soup and I’ve never had it in my life 😳

NoCanoe · 14/12/2017 01:26

@blackeyedkid
Yup....me too!!
I'm in soup mode now! I must have lentil soup.....

Yahdayah · 14/12/2017 06:07

I loved the Moroccan chicken soup that they used to make in the John Lewis cafe (they’ve changed it to something new now after years Hmm), but when I mentioned how much I loved it and could they tell me the recipe they happily printed off the ingredients and recipe for me!

Then when I got home and saw the list of around 25 ingredients I haven’t been so inclined to make it yet! Fingers crossed for you.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/12/2017 08:00

This thread has inspired me to make soup today

It'll be spicy sweet corn with harissa bacon!

thelastredwinegum · 14/12/2017 08:04

I don't think I've ever had lentil soup 🤔

AgentProvocateur · 14/12/2017 08:11

I’m amazed at all these people who have never had lentil soup, abc now I’m wondering if it’s a Scottish thing. We had it at school dinners (lunches) at least once a week, and literally every cafe/take-away shop in the city centre had it as a staple, along with tomato. I’m a good cook, but I’ve never managed to make a really good lentil soup.

RestingBitchFaced · 14/12/2017 08:21

We have a very popular lentil and bacon soup where I work. If you don't get a reply I can print off ingredients of that for you so you get some idea if you wish?

dorothymichaels · 14/12/2017 08:25

I got married there! The food was lovely. Good luck!

I had the most amazing cauliflower soup at a restaurant last year. I've dreamed about it ever since. Why did it not occur to me to ask for the recipe??? Shock

CompletelyUnknown · 14/12/2017 08:31

Surely lentil soup is not a Scottish thing? The problem is no two recipes are the same. It's more of a gizintae (everything goes into it) soup in my family.

OP I've had a look and this place is just over an hour from me. Next time I'm passing I'll need to nip in!

Soupreme · 14/12/2017 10:17

Sorry haven't updated in a while.

The bad news is I haven't received a response yet, either from my original email or FB post.

However, I was telling my colleague this morning about my obsession with this hotels lentil soup and apparently his wife is good friends with the manager (a pleasant chap called Sam). So he's going to ask his wife to ask Sam to ask the chef. It's a long shot but the only hope I have!

Can't believe the number of ppl who have never had lentil soup - to quote a PP "it's the food of the Gods"

This thread is making me hungry, and it's way too early for lunch!

A falafel place near where I work does amazing daal. £1.50 a pot!! It's brilliant.

JessieMcJessie · 14/12/2017 10:40

Was it far away? I see you have an “in” to the manager but why not just pop in yourself and ask? Pretty hard for them to decline face to face and I thought that chefs tended to enjoy getting out of the kitchen to chat to happy diners!

I’m really surprised that they haven’t acknowledged either of your messages though, that’s pretty poor in a customer-facing industry.

StormTreader · 14/12/2017 10:44

I kind of want the eventual answer to be something really basic like "batchelors lentil soup from the can with some tomato ketchup dolloped in" Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 14/12/2017 10:58

So do i storm

I have those ingredients in the cupboard

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 14/12/2017 11:11

I’m making lentil soup today, my own rather fabulous spicy version, because this thread has put me in the mood.

StrangeAndUnusual · 14/12/2017 11:18

Don't make a tit of yourself lying about pretend allergies. I always have to ask about ingredients because of my DC's genuine issues. No one in my situation asks for quantities!! You would sound like an absolute fool.

YouCantBeSirius · 14/12/2017 11:44

My exMIL gave me her lentil soup recipe before she died because I loved it so much. It's a faff to make because you boil a big gammon joint for the stock but oh my it's bloody amazing.

IvorBiggun · 14/12/2017 12:03

Grin Storm I thought that too.

Like in Friends when Monica is desperate for Phoebe’s grandmother’s cookie recipe and it’s the one on the bag of flour or something.

Soupreme · 14/12/2017 15:36

prepares fanfare Here ye! Here ye! I am excited to announce that the hotels chef was very flattered by my email and has indeed sent me the recipe for her amazing Homemade Lentil Soup!

Glancing through it I have some questions but hopefully we can work it out together? Maybe we can Christen this Saturday World Homemade Lentil Soup Day and have a mass recreation of this wonderful recipe and post pics of our efforts?!!

Mental note - calm down and get sharing the recipe already

whiskyowl · 14/12/2017 15:40

YAY! Is it vegetarian? Please God let it be vegetarian!

Welshmaenad · 14/12/2017 15:40

Please post the recipe before I go on the school run so I can go to the Co-op!

Cantuccit · 14/12/2017 15:45

Yay! I hope it's vegetarian friendly!!
