To tell fibs for a soup recipe

Last week I was out for my works Xmas lunch. Overall the lunch was pretty decent, but the starter, lentil soup, was out of this world. It was the most amazing soup I've ever tasted! Seriously I almost cried.

The past week I've thought about the soup every night, thinking of how i can get my hands on the recipe.

If I simply phone the restaurant and say OMG your soup was amazing please give me the recipe I'm certain they'll say no.

Is it wrong to say I had a funny reaction to the soup please give me a list of all the ingredients (preferably with quanititesGrin)?

Or could I say I'm coming to your restaurant and I have funny allergies what's in your lentil soup exactly?

Help I need this recipe! The restaurant is a long drive from my work and home so DH will be like I'm not driving ☓ miles for a bowl of soup.

If I don't get this recipe I will regret it forever. Santa if you're up there i take back my request for Dreamgirls tickets please can you get me this recipe!

I would have thought that the whole block of butter would be for a fairly large panful (10-20 portions?).

I thought the same

It is possible that there is such a thing as too much butter?

No, and stop being silly. Angry

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/12/2017 14:53

Furry

That looks Souperb! (see what I did there? hahaha Grin

I am roaring with laughter at all the people who are making THIS EXACT RECIPE but using leeks, or cavallo nero, and red lentils, potatoes and cream

I know this is how soup works but it's not the actual recipe at all!

rubums · 15/12/2017 15:12

I’m so surprised that some people have never had lentil soup.

It's definitely a Scottish thing. My gran is Scottish and always has a pan of lentil soup on the go, I've grown up with it! And whenever we go see her family in Scotland they're the same! If it wasn't for my gran though I would never have been exposed to it..

FurryDogMother · 15/12/2017 16:23

Nope, not the OP, just someone who likes soup :) The colour of lentils wasn't specified in the recipe, so I used the ones I had - people were speculating that the original may have had green lentils 'cos of the colour of the soup - but I'm not sure I'd be able to taste an actual difference between a red and a green lentil anyway! You really don't notice the butter in the soup - and yep, I made something like 20 portions of it - it's still not totally cooled, but when it is, I'll be bagging and freezing it for future use.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 15/12/2017 17:12

I can't be the only one who is making soup tonight purely because of this thread.

Opheliasgoldenwine · 15/12/2017 17:27

Is it definitely Scottish? I had it growing up in England Confused

foodiefil · 15/12/2017 17:42

@MsHomeSlice you missed my sarcasm then

6demandingchildren · 15/12/2017 18:04

I have made the soup as well based on this thread.
Dh better bring home crusty bread or I will be posting on relationships about what an arse he is

ItsNachoCheese · 15/12/2017 18:06

If you get the recipie a pm would be lovely Wink

cathyclown · 15/12/2017 18:10

Great thread. Thanks OP.

A question though. Anything with lentils in makes me fart for the world.

The passing gas is unreal.

Am I alone.

lurkingnotlurking · 15/12/2017 19:14

Cathyclown you take lentils, I'll take potatoes

Motoko · 15/12/2017 21:50

Not just Scottish. Back in the 70s I used to take a flask of lentil soup to school in the winter, and I was a Londoner.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/12/2017 22:33

I made lentil soup for lunch showme.

It was delicious!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 15/12/2017 22:34

Have you tasted it yet furry. Is it lovely?

MrsPestilence · 15/12/2017 22:39

Should we all make lentil soup this weekend and then post recipes and pictures. Then MN could be the ultimate lentil soup guide Grin

ShowMePotatoSalad · 16/12/2017 11:46

*gone

EmpressoftheMundane · 16/12/2017 12:08

I love lentil soup, the recipe is similar to what we make at home, but we use bacon lardons rather than butter (when you fry them the fat renders out and then you can sweat the onions, celery, carrots in that.) I am sure the butter makes it taste nice, but it must be a massive quantity of soup they are making.

Looks like a nice place to stay for some mountain biking.

Mustang27 · 16/12/2017 13:10

@EmpressoftheMundane check out 7 stanes for mountain biking. The Ae is fantastic as well. Plus you are coastal. You should definitely go. Also I'm with you with the lardons.

bigredboat · 16/12/2017 13:22

Mooey89 and I are going to have a workplace 'soup off' using the 'recipe' - will report back on how it goes!

EmpressoftheMundane · 16/12/2017 14:14

I will check it out Mustang, thanks for the tip!

ElephantsandTigers · 20/12/2017 15:41

Did the OP ever get the recipe?

We had an amazing carrot and coriander soup at a wedding near Barnsley and I've never found one as good. Now I know about the chefs secret ingredient I might make my own.
