I don't understand the hype about Yorkshire?

Is it just me to be fed up with continuous hype about Yorkshire?

TV programmes devoted to the county etc etc. I spent some time up there recently and feel the South West, where I'm from, has far more to offer.

Yorkshire is beautiful and I love it there. I always felt a kind of belonging feeling when I was there.

I'm from a very beautiful area too, the kind of place people go on holiday to because it's beautiful but it's not a patch on Yorkshire.

For me, it's all about the people. Slightly biased as DP is a Yorkshire man. Holmfirth no less! I love all those little villages around there, Scholes, Netherthong, Meltham, Brockholes etc.

bluebells1 · 09/12/2017 08:36

Yorkshire is Lovely! YABVVVVVU. The south east is also nice but too crowded and not as friendly.

heron98 · 09/12/2017 08:36

I'm from Yorkshire. Never thought much of it, then moved down south where I'm afraid to say the scenery is very boring! The south downs are ok, but rather uninspiring and tame. I go back up as often as I can.

Deathraystare · 09/12/2017 08:37

Kent is the garden of England. Just saying smile

That's what I always heard. I was born there - but not a nice bit (near the Rochester Way!.

Roomba · 09/12/2017 08:38

Anyone else play at "booing" the Red Rose when you drive out of Yorkshire, and cheering the White one on the drive back in?

Grin - I thought it was just me that did that! Only in reverse, as sadly I now live in Lancashire (which is also lovely, but it will never quite feel like 'home' to me).

It bothers me a bit that my children are not Yorkshiremen - their father is from Lancashire (well, classed as Greater Manchester these days) and they've grown up in Lancashire - so they don't understand the pride I feel for my home county.

I miss Yorkshire, I'm right next to the Lake District which is stunningly beautiful, but much prefer the Dales. It's just a gut feeling that I have when I return 'home' - it always feels like the most beautiful place on earth. There such a variety of landscapes in Yorkshire and the people are on the whole amazingly friendly and welcoming. I'd love to move back one day.

Roomba · 09/12/2017 08:40

I wasn't very clear about the booing - I cheer the white rose on my way out of Lancashire and boo the red rose on my way back home again (don't want anyone thinking I boo the white rose!). My kids laugh at me and do the opposite, the heathens!

Yorkshire born & bred & I love it, the views oh then there viewshould. I really can't imagine living anywhere else. I also love visiting London.
I spent 5 months in New Zealand & didn't really.like it. Each total their own.
We're all dead nice in Yorkshire too.

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 09/12/2017 08:42

BrizzleDrizzle

A small village in the dales where you were ignored unless 20generations of your family were from there. Gave up, sold the house and moved back here after 10 years.

I had a similar experience when I briefly lived in Derby. They were all v quick to tell me how unfriendly southerners are, having been on a handful of coach trips to London between them

BitOutOfPractice · 09/12/2017 08:45

What hype? Confused

Do you work for the Devon tourist board or something?

Both parts are beautiful imho

DigitalGhost · 09/12/2017 08:48

@roomba me and my DH boo the roses too! Infact if you don't boo the red rose are you even from Yorkshire? Lol.

Teddy1970 totally agree with you. A few slanderous posts towards Southerners on here, undeserved, as there are plenty of Southerners reading this thread. Speaks volumes. All of England is beautiful, shame about the attitude of some of its inhabitants

Depends which bit you spent time in OP ? If it was time spent in a HM prison , well I am not sure you can blame Yorkshire for the shocking state of the countries penal institutes Grin

Although granted the SW does have one of the countries most famous prisons .

ferntwist · 09/12/2017 09:30

YANBU. Northumberland and the Scottish lowlands are much better.

LakieLady · 09/12/2017 09:30

Yorkshire is bloody fab and Yorkshire people are justifiably proud of it. My only criticism of Yorkshire is it's too far from the SE, where I live, and it takes bloody ages to get there.

But that's not Yorkshire's fault.

JacquesHammer · 09/12/2017 09:31

@creambun2 and other places in the country aren't? Your obsession with class/status is bordering on obsessive.

Yorkshire is simply beautiful. The starker and bleaker the better for me

HRTpatch · 09/12/2017 09:32

I'm moving back to Yorkshire after 35 years in London.
Can't wait. Scenery, pork pies and a house I've paid cash for Grin

MorrisZapp · 09/12/2017 09:38

I googled Emley Moor mast.

By 'eck!! Makes me even keener to shag Yorkshireman.

dramallamakarma · 09/12/2017 09:39

We don't want you... stay where you are Wink

HRTpatch · 09/12/2017 09:40

Morris i also have a Yorkshireman to shag 😂

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 09/12/2017 09:59

Your obsession with class/status is bordering on obsessive.

oh dear

I’ve lived in many different places in England, Yorkshire and the SW included and some were ugly and some were beautiful. Yorkshire has Barnsley for example. Dislike competitive snarking, we have a fantastic country and I prefer staycations because there are so many amazing parts that I haven’t explored yet.

BacktoworkonMonday · 09/12/2017 10:03

My experience of both areas is as a tourist. We spent several holidays in Yorkshire when dcs were young. Always found plenty of places to visit, things to do that were either free like Aysgarth Falls, or very reasonably priced like The Forbidden Corner at Middleham. Amazing scenery - Sutton Bank and a mix of city - York and small towns and villages - Hutton le Hole. We always found people very friendly and helpful. It was easy to find places to eat with the children and at a fair price.
Then, we went to Cornwall. I'd had many holidays there as a child and wanted to show my children what an amazing place it is. Except it was probably the worst holiday we ever had. Our experience was that it was great if you were happy to sit on a beach all day and had accommodation where food was part of the package. But if you wanted to visit places other than a beach, we found it expensive, difficult to find suitable places to eat with young teens and frankly, we did not find the people especially welcoming. It felt that they resented us for being there. Haven't ever been back and have no intention of going. Will definitely re-visit Yorkshire though.

NovemberWitch · 09/12/2017 10:05

Ahh, you see all our holidays also celebrate the English tradition of The Picnic. Think Ratty and Mole...:)
