I don't understand the hype about Yorkshire?

Is it just me to be fed up with continuous hype about Yorkshire?

TV programmes devoted to the county etc etc. I spent some time up there recently and feel the South West, where I'm from, has far more to offer.

@stevie69 I'm alright really. Recently mended broken bone/ripped ligament. The cold isn't helping!!

Wouldn't it be funny if we did know each other Grin

mirialis · 09/12/2017 11:52

The North is just prettier - really true, there are many beautiful parts of the country but the further north you travel, the prettier it gets, reaching the pinnacle with the Scottish highlands.

Only trouble is the weather also gets progressively worse. I'm in the process of thinking about buying somewhere outside of London and really torn between the mountains and lakes up north or the temperatures and sunshine of the south coast.

gillybeanz · 09/12/2017 11:57

The north West is beautiful, Yorkshire gets some extreme weather and is basically there to keep the bad weather from Lancashire, which is a far superior county Grin

There are lots of southerners in Yorkshire now, especially areas outside Leeds as lots of finance companies moved staff up here.
I think tv companies favour the richer parts like Harrogate, there was a programme about Christmas decorations recently.

BackBoiler · 09/12/2017 11:57

Rock up to the nearest Yates's wine lodge buy a Yorkshire man a pint and say how Leeds UTD/Leeds Rhinos/Yorks cricket team are the best in the world

Unless you are in Sheffield. No one in Sheffield likes Leeds Utd. I think its the only thing Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield Utd fans can agree on!

LemonysSnicket · 09/12/2017 12:19

@MattBerrysHair I agree! Used to drive from Lancaster to Leeds when at Uni and the summer evening over the horizon made my chest constrict! Most incredible feeling of mixed beauty and home coming.

LemonysSnicket · 09/12/2017 12:26

@LoneParenting101 - I'm from Wetherby!
Although living in London right now for work, sobs

g1itterati · 09/12/2017 13:09

I've never been to Yorkshire, but am intrigued now after reading some if these posts. What are the best places to stay / things to see?

As a Londoner, I have to say the Devon / Dorset coastline is my favourite area of the UK, but to be honest, by the time it takes to drive down there in Fri night or in Bank Holiday traffic, you may as well go to Tuscany or somewhere equally stunning abroad. I haw to admit, we tend to in short breaks in Europe rather than "out into England".

I have been to Cumbria and Wales and they are beautiful but the buildings and landscape look so damp and grey I find it depressing. Two days is enough for me. I imagine the Yorkshire Moors to be very bleak and damp, but where is the best place to stay if you go?

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 09/12/2017 13:14

Least us Northerners can afford a deposit for a house without having to sell a kidney like you Southerners

Grin That made me laugh! ''Tis true!
I didn't enjoy living in Yorkshire but I rarely think about it, I certainly wouldn't start a thread on mumsnet about it Confused

LoniceraJaponica · 09/12/2017 13:29

"Unless you are in Sheffield"

Or Barnsley. Leeds United played Barnsley a couple of weeks ago in Barnsley. I have never seen so many police in the town centre before, not even on other match days. They had police bikes at the motorway junctions, foot patrols on every street corner, mounted police, and several police vans at the station.

Oh, and we can see Emley Moor mast from our house. It is our Angel of the North when coming back from the north east. I love how it is lit up like a Christmas tree at night.

Rangelife · 09/12/2017 13:40

Yorkshire is bloody freeeeezing at the moment. I live in Skipton. It's proper nice. I've lived in Leeds, Sunderland, Manchester, Macclesfield, London Surrey and Vancouver. They've all had stuff to offer in their own unique way. I guess the OP just isn't very open minded.

NeverTwerkNaked · 09/12/2017 13:55

parts of Yorkshire are dismal; other parts are breathtakingly beautiful. The best parts are as lovely as you will find anywhere in the country, the grim parts can be avoided.
I grew up in Yorkshire and miss it every day; miss the space and the people and the moors.
Down here it’s just endlessly dull suburbia and traffic jams.

romany4 · 09/12/2017 13:59

Weather is rubbish but it's beautiful here. I love living rurally.
My family all still live down South and its so crowded and busy, I'm always itching to come home asap when I visit them.
And my son us doing really well at Leeds Uni. I'd never move South again

Unnoticed · 09/12/2017 14:00

NeverTwerkNaked - The thing I struggled with down there was the boring flatness of it all - where are the hills? The points of reference?

HRTpatch · 09/12/2017 14:01

rangelife I'm staying in Skipton next weekend. Where to eat???

Pigflewpast · 09/12/2017 14:12

HRT eat at Oakleys, food is fantastic. Might need your elastic waistband though, huge portions

NC4now · 09/12/2017 14:14

I’m from Lancashire and even I think this is bonkers!!

ginplease8383 · 09/12/2017 14:16

I’m from the south west too and feel they are similar. Slightly biased towards the south west though

Paddingtonthebear · 09/12/2017 14:29

Has no one mentioned how ugly and flat East Yorkshire is though?

LoniceraJaponica · 09/12/2017 14:31

It never got a mention on here did it? When people say how beautiful Yorkshire is they are usually referring to North, West and South Yorkshire, which are all hilly and have lots of old towns with loads of character and history.

Paddingtonthebear · 09/12/2017 14:35

Yep East Yorkshire is very uninspiring.

As people say, Yorkshire is a big place and it’s not all amazing, not by a very long shot.

I don’t know why people want to slag off the south and say it has no beauty compared to the north. Obviously they don’t know how beautiful parts of the south coast are with amazing beaches stunning beaches as well as beautiful hilly rural countrywide - Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. I do think parts of the north are nice but it’s so bloody cold.

thewalrus · 09/12/2017 14:44

From Yorkshire. Live on the cornish coast now. Appreciate where I live now on a daily basis but also love my occasional visit to the motherland and deeply disappointed that my cornish children find the accent funny. OP, yabtotallyu

HoarseMackerel · 09/12/2017 15:02

I live on the south coast but York never fails to be a favourite holiday spot for me. I really want to visit the surrounding area but we only ever seem to go for a few days so by the time we've finished doing the zillion things there are to do in York, we run out of time!
Absolutely love it there.
The National Railway Museum is my son's favourite place in the world. He's 20 now! I took my daughter there last time as she couldn't remember it from years back. She was quite cynical but came out suitably impressed!!!
I love where I live now but will continue to visit the York area.
Shame it's so far away!

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 09/12/2017 15:11

However the so called "golden triangle" mean property prices are not all cheap where I am...

I thought the golden triangle was something to do with growing rhubarb.

grimeofthecentury · 09/12/2017 15:12

The south west is the most depressing place IN THE WORLD. Fact

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 09/12/2017 15:14

Unless you are in Sheffield. No one in Sheffield likes Leeds Utd. I think its the only thing Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield Utd fans can agree on!

This is true. DH is a Leeds fan. I've had to warn him that if he tells anyone I will immediately LTB.
