That Britain should rethink BREXIT

David Davis admitting that the impact of Brexit will be equal to the credit crunch should surely make the country revisit the decision.
Why put your country through such a difficult period?

Remaining was absolutely not a known quantity. The ever closer union and developing of United States of Europe was widely derided, the worry of an EU army was utterly disparaged both now acknowledged aims. Voting Remain was in no way a vote for the status quo it was as much a vote for the unknown as a Leave vote.

Viviennemary · 12/12/2017 21:33

Totally agree with your post InfiniteSheldon And ever increasing contributions to the EU pot. The EU isn't going to stand still.

Sludgecolours · 12/12/2017 21:46

VivienneMary forget everything else, people were led up the garden path to vote Brexit believing that they would be no worse off. The reality, as is now becoming very clear, is quite the opposite. (Even DD admits there is likely to be an effect similar to the most recent recession.). As the SNP says, people didnt vote leave to be poorer. So the correct thing to do would be to give everyone a chance to vote on the final deal, when they can see what this is, what the choices really are, and comprehend the details of our future trade and economic relationships with the EU and the rest of the world.

Sludgecolours · 12/12/2017 21:58

And we've come circular fashion, back to the op.

frumpety · 12/12/2017 22:11

Infinite can you post a link to where it says there will definitely be a EU army and the terms of that please ? An aim, as with our own dear Government, is something that can be reneged on at any point in the future , so .......

curryforbreakfast · 12/12/2017 22:13

And it doesn't matter now whether it's true or not we're leaving. The arguments and campaigning are over and the decision has been made. Something a lot of folk haven't got into their heads yet

Of course it still matters! The arguments are by no means over, its hardly begun....

Theworldisfullofidiots · 12/12/2017 22:42

When people talk about our contribution to the EU pot can we just remember it's 0.6% of our GDP. To put this in context we currently spend 8% OF GDP on pensions and this is set to rise.
Any other option to import and export goods (because that is what we are talking about) will cost a lot more than that. The difference is we are likely to be paying this cost both in tax and in the hidden cost of increased costs of goods etc.

Peregrina · 13/12/2017 00:14

I don't remember elections being re-run and the results being invalid because some politician has told a lie

You may not remember it, but it has happened. The Woolas case is a famous one. Admittedly, he was lying about his opponent, rather than telling out and out porkies about himself.

In other cases, a local govt by-election was voided last year, because the winning candidate wasn't eligible for election, although this ought to have been spotted before it got that far.

Maryz · 13/12/2017 00:27

Technically general elections are re-run every four years. Everyone gets a chance to change their minds.

It'd be a bit rough to announce "next years general election will be the last one ever, and decisions made then are binding for the foreseeable future, no matter what the result we will never let you vote again".

Peregrina · 13/12/2017 00:30

every four years.
five years, or sooner, as with the case of the 2017 election.

twofingerstoEverything · 13/12/2017 07:24

I think it's possible that some feeble soft Brexit will take place that will please neither side.
So we are putting ourselves through this pointless, divisive, expensive exercise for nothing. Frankly, I can think of better things our taxes should have been spent on/will continue to be spent on.

Humpsfor20yards · 13/12/2017 07:48

A 'feeble soft brexit' as opposed to what? A powerful hard brexit that will ruin the countries economy?

I think this complacent 'oh politicians all lie' is really dangerous. And no, they don't all lie.
Only one of the campaigns is being investigated for corruption.

makeourfuture · 13/12/2017 07:51

The ever closer union and developing of United States of Europe was widely derided

Treaty change in the near future is very unlikely. And again Britain would be part of the process.

Whizziwig · 13/12/2017 07:59

With an obvious lack of commitment from Trump's America towards NATO, I don't think an EU army would be a bad idea at all. Surely what is happening in America right now should be a glaring klaxon that we should not rely on them for support. Crazy to be disrupting our relations within Europe at such a time.

JacquesHammer · 13/12/2017 07:59

Voting Remain was in no way a vote for the status quo it was as much a vote for the unknown as a Leave vote

That's nonsense.

If the "will of the people" was to Remain do you honestly think there'd be as many worried people right now?

JacquesHammer · 13/12/2017 08:03

If leave does go ahead a soft Brexit to really piss of all the Leavers is my ideal

curryforbreakfast · 13/12/2017 09:20

I think it is already locked in as a very soft brexit. No hard border with the EU, full regulatory alignment, all EU people fine to stay.....is anything going to change? Other than costing a massive amount and losing lots of business, obviously.

Humpsfor20yards · 13/12/2017 09:28

Things will get much worse economically and those who voted because of immigration- especially those who voted brexit because they don't like Muslim immigration - are going to have a nasty surprise.

surferjet · 13/12/2017 09:29

JacquesHammer

You’re coming across as very bitter & childish.

JacquesHammer · 13/12/2017 09:32

You’re coming across as very bitter & childish

Get over it Grin

And bitter? Yeah. Ignorant idiots have fucked the country and made the future very uncertain for me and my child.

Still. Sovereignty, yay!! We've got our country back.

curryforbreakfast · 13/12/2017 09:34

Of course we're bitter, Brexiteers are ruining peoples lives.

But childish? No, that's all yours.

surferjet · 13/12/2017 09:37

Well that’s the price you pay for living in a democracy I’m afraid.

Thatcher ruined more lives than leaving the EU ever will. But I don’t think politics is your strong point.

JacquesHammer · 13/12/2017 09:39

Well that’s the price you pay for living in a democracy I’m afraid.
Thatcher ruined more lives than leaving the EU ever will. But I don’t think politics is your strong point

Why? Because we understand what a disaster Brexit is going to be?

What has Thatcher got to do with it? You do know people are capable of formatting opinion about two wholly different political issues right?

Oh dear

JacquesHammer · 13/12/2017 09:39

@surferjet so if Brexit is halted, will you agree that's the price you play for living in a democracy?

JacquesHammer · 13/12/2017 09:40

*pay
