That Britain should rethink BREXIT

WallisofWindsor · 06/12/2017 12:14

David Davis admitting that the impact of Brexit will be equal to the credit crunch should surely make the country revisit the decision.
Why put your country through such a difficult period?

We took a Democratic vote, you can’t change the outcome the vote now , no matter how stupid it is.

Yes. Yes you can. It has been explained at length.

curryforbreakfast · 10/12/2017 15:09

Of course you can. Or you can take another democratic vote.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 10/12/2017 15:12

Of course we should re-think it. It's completely insane!

Peregrina · 10/12/2017 15:18

Have I missed the announcement from Theresa May that Brexit's off? All I have seen so far is that it's going ahead, but that she has given herself a bit of wiggle room by kicking the can of NI/RoI border down the road. For some reason, Leave.EU don't like this, and are whining about 17 million being betrayed, but they were betrayed on 24th June, when the leaders of the Leave campaign said there was no more money for the NHS. Wasn't that what the 17 million voted for?

Tanith · 10/12/2017 16:20

"So leave voters would just shrug their shoulders & forget about it? you really think that would happen? "

Yes that's exactly what most of them will do. Probably roll their eyes a bit while they're at it.

twofingerstoEverything · 10/12/2017 19:40

Who do you think you’re talking to?

Grin Grin Grin

Oh, the outrage!

GoingIn · 10/12/2017 19:49

The whole brexit thing is of course insanity on a massive scale and what gets me is how it is being used to distract from a whole load of other things that are currently messed up in this country.

Surfer honest questions , do you remember YTS schemes and the massive unemployment in the UK in the past ? Do you remember the miners strikes ? Do you remember interest rates being in double figures ?

cathyclown · 11/12/2017 20:32

I'm getting the feeling that the Irish Government have all the brains here, and they will not agree to the UK Government messing them around anymore.

I am very impressed with Varadker and Coveney, they sure know their stuff. I doubt they will be pressured by anyone. They have shown that already.

curryforbreakfast · 12/12/2017 09:45

I just heard a vox pop on the radio from voters on both sides in Essex and how they feel about it now. It made me want to smash my head into the steering wheel.

A 65 year old woman talking about how she voted to make Britain great again because things have gone downhill since we joined the EU and if we leave then things will go back to how they were in the 1950's. And how she doesn't mind if it takes a few decades of hardship to get there......Hmm

Also a woman talking about how pensioners in Germany are treated much nicer and how when we leave the EU the British pensioners will be much better off.

The delusion out there is incredible,

Humpsfor20yards · 12/12/2017 11:04

It is staggering/frightening - but then if you look at the Mail, the Express and the Sun (but slightly less so) you can see where some people are getting these stupid ideas from.

Today's Express has May batting away Remoaner Chuka, Eu digging in its heels, EU trade deal can be sorted in 10 mins, etc, etc.

Maryz · 12/12/2017 13:10

I posted this on the other thread as well.

For those of you who don't get the Irish papers, here is the Irish Times take on it

I know there is a paywall, but it should work for most of you, and I suspect it's pretty accurate.

The three possible outcomes are clearly explained.

I think that (again) the UK government is being slightly economical with the truth, and are reserving the right to blame Ireland if it all goes to shit.

surferjet · 12/12/2017 13:24

frumpety

Vaguely yes. Why?

Maryz · 12/12/2017 13:44

Oh, ffs

frumpety · 12/12/2017 19:10

Surfer because I don't remember anyone blaming the EU for it , people tended to blame who was in Government in those days. I know the EU has expanded , but we have been at the heart of decisions made throughout that expansion right up until present day .

surferjet · 12/12/2017 19:58

The leave vote was won on immigration / F.O.M.

And whether we like it or not, Nigel Farage’s popularity was the reason leave won, & he wasn’t even in the official team!
Plus people just wanted change.
But we’ve been over this a million times since the referendum, it’s all been said before.
But personally, I was really surprised at the anger & aggression by some remainers, really surprised. Still am tbh.
I’d be interested to hear your views on why you think leave won.

Viviennemary · 12/12/2017 20:21

I think leave won because people didn't want the EU dictating the laws of this country and over-ruling our courts. And people don't want even more closer ties with Europe.

makeourfuture · 12/12/2017 20:47

EU dictating the laws of this country and over-ruling our courts

That is not exactly how it works.

First of all, on a very basic level, Britain was involved fully in the EU legislative and regulatory systems.

Secondly, there is no real "over-ruling" of UK Courts. National courts are the first courts to apply EU law. If someone feels that national courts are not in harmony with Treaty or regulation, they can seek a reference for a preliminary ruling, whereby the Court of Justice can examine whether the Member State is in conflict. Again, Member States, including Britain are all part of this legal function.

Again, no one "does" anything to the UK - we are part of all processes.

Viviennemary · 12/12/2017 20:51

I said that was why I thought people voted leave in response to surferjet's question. And it doesn't matter now whether it's true or not we're leaving. The arguments and campaigning are over and the decision has been made. Something a lot of folk haven't got into their heads yet.

Viviennemary · 12/12/2017 20:53

I don't want to be part of the EU process thank you. I want out.

Sludgecolours · 12/12/2017 20:59

"And it doesn't matter now whether it's true or not ..."

Wow. Just wow.

Viviennemary · 12/12/2017 21:17

Politicians lie all the time in elections. I don't remember elections being re-run and the results being invalid because some politician has told a lie. Maybe the remainers told lies too. People listen to the arguments and make their decision. I think it's possible that some feeble soft Brexit will take place that will please neither side.

JacquesHammer · 12/12/2017 21:20

This wasn't an election.

Maybe the remainers told lies too

The thing about Remain is that remaining was the known quantity. There was no change to the status quo. So you'd have to be spectacularly thick to try and lie about that on the side of a bus
