To be disappointed/peed off with CBeebies?

ButterfliesAreWeird · 04/12/2017 20:07

Today I bought my son the monthly CBeebies magazine and this was smack bang in the middle of it. It was supposed to be about doctors but this is just promoting cancer, heart disease, diabetes, ect. I'm no vegan but I know when I'm sitting there eating a cheese and egg sandwich that it's not good for me, yet this is stating it's vital to have 2 unhealthy groups of food each day to be healthy. This gos against the NHS, the WHO, and just science in general. I would have expected this 10 years ago but it's 2017 and we know better.

To be disappointed/peed off with CBeebies?

This gos against the NHS

Pretty sure that's the NHS Eatwell Plate?

QueenUnicorn · 04/12/2017 20:37

In the past few years they have proved meat, eggs, and dairy cause heat disease, diabetes, and cancers. Also just a side, leafy greens a the best source of calcium
Exercise is also a cancer causer because of free radicals. Excess carbohydrates can also cause diabetes and heart disease.
These things just need to be eaten in moderation and accompanied with the other food groups to form part of a balanced diet.
Cutting out entire food groups is never the way forward.

TisapityshesaGeordie · 04/12/2017 20:37

OP, I mean this as kindly as possibly but WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU??!

Ecureuil · 04/12/2017 20:37

What should my two pre schoolers be eating?

KoalasAteMyHomework · 04/12/2017 20:37

I am confused as to why you say this goes against NHS and WHO guidelines. I haven't read anything from these organisations about cutting out dairy or meat. In fact the picture in your post looks pretty similar to nearly every healthy eating post I have been shown at preschool/children's centre/health visitor teams.
You are of course welcome to your views on what constitutes a healthy diet for yourself and your child(ren) but opinions are not facts.

Atenco · 04/12/2017 20:37

meat, eggs, and dairy cause heat disease, diabetes, and cancers

I wasn't around when that news was published.

RobinHumphries · 04/12/2017 20:38

The pubmed link posted actually stated an increase in milk decreases the risk of vascular diseases and possibly some cancers

ThunderboltsLightning · 04/12/2017 20:39

How dare they promote a varied and balanced diet. Children?! Eating EGGS AND CHEESE?? The mind boggles.

Dozyoldtwonk · 04/12/2017 20:39

If everyone took your attitude OP we’ll be raising a generation of unhealthily food obsessed children. Not good. ‘Clean eating’ or cutting out whole food groups (veggies and vegans aside) is just as bad as any other form of disorderd eating, in my very real experience, and not something I am particularly keen to pass down to my DC.

Charolais · 04/12/2017 20:40

My parents and grandparents lived long healthy lives and ate cheese and egg sandwiches. My husbands grandfather lived to be 97 and he ate fatty meat and pancakes with lots of syrup most of the time. Oh and he smoked a pipe until he died.

Looks pretty similar to the CBeebies one?

Caroian · 04/12/2017 20:41

Gah.... don't usually comment on stuff like this but your use of "proved" has irritated me! There is only one single proven common causative factor for all cancers - it's called being alive. You cannot get cancer if you are not alive. Other than that there is no one cause common to all cases.

Eating an unhealthy diet does not guarantee that you will get cancer any more than eating a healthy diet guarantees that you won't. An unhealthy diet will raise the chance of it happening. That is all that is "proved".

And a healthy diet is generally a balanced one.

donquixotedelamancha · 04/12/2017 20:42

"I'm no vegan but I know when I'm sitting there eating a cheese and egg sandwich that it's not good for me, yet this is stating it's vital to have 2 unhealthy groups of food each day to be healthy."

You are wrong. You need fats and protein in your diet, just not to excess. Kids, in particular need proportionally more dairy and protein.

"In the past few years they have proved meat, eggs, and dairy cause heat disease, diabetes, and cancers. Also just a side, leafy greens a the best source of calcium"

-None of those things cause diabetes.

-Excess calories from too much of these things can cause heart disease, just as too few calories can cause malnutrition.

-Some processed meat can contribute to colon cancer if eaten too much, but the effect is small.

-Kids need a lot of calcium, it would be very difficult to get enough from green veg.

I really don't think you are qualified to say what "gos against science".

Willow2017 · 04/12/2017 20:43

Dont be daft!

Say you ate 3 times as many gramms of 'greens' like cabbage as cheese - that would equal LESS than half the amount in the cheese!

Hell even sardines come before veg in the calcium stakes!

Kids need calcium and the best way to get it into them is dairy and just add extra with all the other stuff like fish, veg, nuts and seeds etc. (allergies etc aside)

Kids need a balanced diet of all food groups to grow including fats to develope their brain and nervous system, putting kids on a daft restrictive diet without proper nutritional knowledge (as most vegans actually have) is harmful.

underneaththeash · 04/12/2017 20:43

OP just to remind you too that you need calcium too in order to absorb vitamin D.

twotired · 04/12/2017 20:44

@gingergenius Grin

HottySnanky · 04/12/2017 20:45

Have a Biscuit. It also probably causes teh cancer/AIDS/worms/paranoia etc etc

Hmm
BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 04/12/2017 20:47

We all need fat in our diet and kids need it more than we do a low fat diet is bad for them!

TheLegendOfBeans · 04/12/2017 20:47

Deck the halls with goady fuckers
Fa la la la
Cheese eggs & meat

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 04/12/2017 20:47

Get a grip.

Cheese and eggs are both good sources of protein and the cheese is high in calcium.

I’m sorry but I can’t take you seriously, and less so when you miss spell the word etc.

JessiCake · 04/12/2017 20:47

OP I really, really don't think 'they' have proved that eating meat and dairy causes cancer.

I'm not an oncologist but my best friend is one.

When we discuss these things (usually over a slow-cooked meat and a bottle of red) she tells me that most cancers are 'caused' by genetics/sheer bad luck.

Yes, your risk of getting bowel cancer, colon cancer etc goes up if you eat a lot of meat and smoked foods.

For sure, your risk of lung cancer shoots up if you smoke.

This does honestly not mean that all cancer (even most cancer) is 'caused' by eating meat. Or dairy. In normal, moderate amounts. Alongside salads, leafy greens, fruit, cereals, carbs, fibre. Etc. A balanced diet.

I'm sure someone who actually knows the detail will be along to explain this further, but it's quite wrong to think/declare that meat and dairy 'cause cancer'. No, they don't. Even in HUGE amounts, I don't think anyone with a science background would say they 'cause' cancer. And most people don't eat HUGE amounts of any one food group, do they?

KidLorneRoll · 04/12/2017 20:47

"In the past few years they have proved meat, eggs, and dairy cause heat disease, diabetes, and cancers"

Who has? Dr Fucking Bullshit?

Mynametodaywillbe · 04/12/2017 20:49

OP you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

What's a typical day's food for your ds?

NerrSnerr · 04/12/2017 20:51

I think CBeebies are in business with big phama. If they encourage children to eat an egg and cheese sandwich everyday they’ll all end up with cancer, heart disease and diabetes and it’ll make the pharmaceutical companies a fortune.

QueenieMum · 04/12/2017 20:51

I'm pretty sure the magazine editor checked before publishing. If you listened to all the 'cancer causing' stuff you wouldn't eat, drink or do anything. Surely encouraging a healthy attitude to a wide range of food is to be applauded not criticised?

This is only the second thread I've read this evening and both have been highly entertaining. Thanks OP!
