AIBU?

To not tell DD

DD is 6, nearly 7. She's been vegetarian since August and has been absolutely adamant about it, brilliant with what she eats and shows no sign of relenting. I'm all for this and have also pretty much gone veggie. DH and DS have not, therefore there is meat stuff in the fridge.

Fridays are our night when we rush from a to b and back again without time to turn round. I WFH so try and fit that in amidst everything else. This is me preparing my excuse for being such a fuckwit. I did oven chips and what I thought were fish fingers for DD tonight before she went out to Beavers (this is not an AIBU about crap parenting and crap food, it's Friday, we're busy, they eat well the rest of the time!) All good, I had one, thought weird consistency but nothing more of it. Got them out to put in for DS later and realised they were chicken fingers. We have never had these in the freezer before, I can only assume DH bought them as part of a Co-op meal deal or some such thing.

AIBU not to tell DD? I don't think it will do either of us any good.

Is the OP coming back, or currently freaking out further over the discovery that fish (even in delicious golden breadcrumbs) is as vegetarian as chicken fingers?

God what a bunch of arseholes with the smug fish comments

How on Earth is it ‘smug’ to point out that fish isn’t vegetarian? Only on MN could you be berated for pointing out an undeniable fact.

Why would you tell her?

I suspect MiL cooks her roast potatoes in goose fat and served them to DS. It's only once a year, so I've never said anything, but this year I shall be taking his entire Christmas lunch with us, just to on in the safe side.

What's done is done, you can only do your best in the future.

I think the fish comments are probably because vegetarians do get quite annoyed when people assume they eat fish, which happens a lot because pescatarians label themselves as vegetarians.

My friend thought for years her favourite soup from her favourite restaurant was vegetarian because she asked and they told her it was. Turns out it had fish stock in it.

Clearly not such a clever clogs then if you can't appreciate that even facts can be delivered in a smug tone.

Surely the comments are just because there is no sense worrying about chicken goujons when you intended to feed something non-vegetarian anyway?

Yes, we're smug.
We veggies love being offered fish or being given something we're assured is vegetarian to find it contains fish sauce or chicken stock or even bits of meat.

My niece is a vegetarian, The rule is, she doesn't eat anything that once had a face, Your daughter is still eating things that were once alive.

I’ve read through this thread a few times, I’m still not sure who you’re alluding to in ‘being smug’. Only people quite rightly pointing out that eating fish negates any ‘vegetarianism’.

You on the other hand, are coming over rather aggressive, when there really is no need.

Honeyishrunk I was veggie through my teens and went with some friends to cafe once. I picked the French onion soup thinking it was the safe option! I had no idea the main ingredient was beef stock! When I asked the cafe how they made it and she said beef stock, I was mortified and my friends wouldn’t let me live it down for ages. It became a family joke ‘Tumble is a vegetarian, except for beef of course’ Grin

Yes, in your tone.

I think you're making a fuss over nothing. She eats fish anyway so why not chicken?! She's six, I would just let it go and forget it.

I didn’t think you were aggressive.

Just pious and preachy. Xmas Grin

It doesn't matter, whether it is chicken or fish makes little difference given that she's not a vegetarian.

I wouldn't bother telling her but I would explain to her that she's not a vegetarian because she eats fish. She's old enough to understand the difference.

I'm surprised that the DD hasn't realised by now that eating fish means she's not a vegetarian.

We all cut corners. My vegan daughter and I often have veggie batons, a baked sweet potato, some vegan cream cheese, avocado, or just some veggie spring rolls from frozen as a quick tea.

Don't upset her, just let her carry on being veggie. Fish aren't a vegetable, they are an animal.

She is six going on seven. She ate the chicken fingers didn't she? Anyway this is why I feel kids should not be veggie until they can identify non veggie food. That sounds reasonable to me.

What is the added value of telling her they were not veggie. Really, honestly, I would love to know what level of martyrdom you would like at the moment.

Shoo, forget it and move on.

Only on MN have I ever come across this obsession with making sure everyone knows fish is not a vegetable. Not really what the OP was asking, is it.

Tricky one, OP. If it were me, I'd want to know, but then I avoid meat for health reasons and would want to be able to make sense of any symptoms I had. If DD avoids it for ethical reasons 'only', and you're disinclined to upset her over a one-off transgression, I guess I'd say it's hardly crime of the century to keep it to yourself. I really hate lying to children myself though, and could never bear to go along with Father Christmas crap for that reason. I think I would explain what had happened, apologise, and use it as an opportunity to teach her that sometimes things don't go according to plan but the sky doesn't actually fall down after all.

As a pescetarian myself, in a household of omnivores, I must say I can see why you and DD eat fish, as imo it's a helpful way of ensuring a nutritionally adequate diet on a tight time schedule in the company of people who are unwilling to participate in a complete redesign of shopping, cooking and eating patterns.

I expect I'll get flamed for pretty much all of that, but I don't care.

Dratted app
Ds is a vegetarian as are all our family, he also has a Life threatening allergy to fish! I for one don’t want his diet compromised by people who can’t just say they’re pescatarians and risk him being given fish because of it
